Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine

From the Back Cover

Following a topical-chronological structure, and using Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology as a template, this book traces the historical development of the most significant Evangelical doctrines from the early church, into the Middle Ages, across the Reformation and post-Reformation eras, and through the modern period. Unlike the vast majority of historical theology books, it is first arranged topically---chapters treat the inspiration of Scripture, the Trinity, the atonement, the Holy Spirit, justification, the nature of the church, and the final judgment and eternal punishment; thirty-three doctrines in all---then developed chronologically, with each doctrine traced through the four periods. Limiting references to the most significant church leaders, biblical scholars, and theologians who have contributed to the development of these doctrines, the book cites the actual words of Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others to stimulate a sense of connection with the past. Moreover, it carefully documents the most accessible references from which the citations are taken, for the purpose of making further study as easy as possible.

“Historical Theology” is a concise, consequential, constructive, conversant, courteous introduction to how many major doctrines have become part of today’s systematic theologies. Gregory the Great said about Scripture, “It is almost like a river, both shallow and deep, in which a lamb may walk and an elephant swim.” “Historical Theology” is not Scripture, but it also has value for lambs and elephants, as it can be used as a textbook for the student, a convenient reference book for the pastor and an accessible survey for the beginner. I think my favorite things about it were the creative topical arrangement (correlated with Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”), the clear writing style and the helpful glossary of leaders and movements. My kindle edition did have one page where some information about elders and deacons was typographically garbled, but it wasn’t a big deal. For me, the book helped refine my own systematic theology, as well as fanned the flame of my devotion. Good stuff for lambs and elephants and for the head and the heart.

I waited for Gregg Allison's, Historical Theology for over a year. After carefully devouring over 700 pages, Allison's work does not disappoint.Historical Theology is patterned after Wayne Grudem's, Systematic Theology and follows a topical-chronological framework that makes studying historical theology a real delight. For those familiar with historical theology, a discipline that is often presented in a dull and dreary manner, Allison's work is a gift that will be utilized and appreciated by many Bible students and pastors.Historical Theology is arranged in seven sections:Part 1: The Doctrine of the Word of GodPart 2: The Doctrine of GodPart 3: The Doctrine of HumanityPart 4: The Doctrines of Christ and the Holy SpiritPart 5: The Doctrine of the Application of RedemptionPart 6: The Doctrine of the ChurchPart 7: The Doctrine of the FutureEach section follows a predictable pattern that moves readers through the respective doctrinal developments that begin with the early church and proceed to the middle ages, the Reformation, and the modern period. The author presents historical developments in a fair and gracious manner. He alerts readers to matters that pertain to heretical proclivities as well as orthodox dogma.Historical Theology will no doubt serve as the standard textbook in Bible College and Seminaries for many years to come.5 stars[...]

Not exactly light reading but if you want a fair and balanced approach to historical theology this is the book. Works in conjunction with Wayne Grudem's "Systematic Theology." I am about to finish up my Master's in theology and it would be a great textbook for a graduate class. So what I am saying is someone that is just entering in the faith or has a limited understanding of history might find the language a bit challenging, but it is worth the challenge. Get a good theological dictionary and you will be good to go.

I had to purchase this text for a class I was taking. It was a good companion to Grudem's Systematic Theology text which was also required.

I like the way the information is collated. Makes things easier to grasp.

This book is a really helpful timesaver for the serious student. It is well worth the investment for your library.

Gregg Allison has provided a wonderful resource to the church with this new work in Historical Theology. The introduction is worth the price of admission and the content is well documented throughout for further research. The work is both informative and practical and will be of great use to the English speaking Christian world. Protestants, who can at times dwell too little in the post Augustine, pre Luther time period of church history, will be especially helped by this work.Having taught with Gregg on historical theology for church planters and worked with him on various projects, I highly recommend his work. Dr. Allison understands the importance of historical theology for the day to day mission of the church. This volume will help deepen preaching, overcome our chronological bias and build God's people in the faith. Highly recommended.
