I don't know how many years ago I first read Robin William's "A Mac is not a Typewriter." It started me thinking from a designer's point of view. I've read several of her books since and recommend them to my students, this one especially.This book is an excellent introduction to typography, and using typography in design for a beginner and a good refresher for the more experienced. Williams explains technical terms with a lightness and ease I envy. She makes good design concepts seem obvious not obscure or difficult. This is an excellent primer and reading it would benefit countless self-trained desktop publishers.

I have no graphic design background, but have always been interested in pursuing it as a hobby and/or freelance opportunity eventually. This has been an incredible resource for me as a beginner.It has tought me tons about fonts, colors, layout ideas, designing business card and other business forms, and so much more, it'd be impossible to list it all. The way the author lays out the book makes all this new information so easy to comprehend, and that is one of the things I like most about the book.I am always going back to re-read and look at ideas and info when I'm working on designing different things.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in graphic design.

I learned a lot from this book. I can hardly believe some of the one-star comments: “pretensious and cocky,” "no help,” “written for a 3-year old.” I did not see any of that. If you didn’t attend graphic design school and want to make your designs ten times better, this book is amazing. The author breaks down four simple concepts and then shows you step-by-step examples to help you to apply those concepts. I’ve been looking for a book like this for years because I wanted to understand design better without needing a degree and I can see how the concepts could apply to other areas of visual design as well. This book also has font tips—wow—which have totally changed my typing life. Great book.

If you need to do graphic design and are not professionally trained, buy this book and read it. It was a fast, easy read with lots of before/after pictures to illustrate applying the principles she teaches. My own work has improved dramatically after doing this work. I was a competent amateur, but now what I'm producing looks better, and I have the words to explain how and why it is better. This book was worth every penny, and it's not particularly expensive to begin with.

This is an awesome book. The author clearly builds on proper design principles using outstanding examples of poorly and properly designed bulletins, personal stationary, postcards, resumes, etc. Although I have been using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign (formerly Pagemaker for years), I have a lot to learn about graphic design. Considerable emphasis is placed on the focus for the particular design followed by four easily understood design principles. The last one-half of the book concerns use of type.The book does not and should not teach specific brand-name computer applications.This is one great book. Seriously. I highly recommend the book to any beginner or low intermediate designer. Thank you very much.

Pretty good book for the novice designer and it will improve your design skills after applying the principles in the book. Easy to read, follow and understand, it also has good tips and tricks to make your design work look better and more professional. The chapter on color is really good and the chapter on fonts shows you there's more to a font than meets the eye. Highly recommended if you have no design background and need to do your own newsletters, flyers etc.

As someone prepping for a continuing ed design program, I wanted to get my hands on some basic knowledge of graphic design. This book is exactly what I needed, and covers the principles of design in short, sweet, and accurate detail. Coming from a more technical background I appreciate how succinct this book is and clearly lays out the point and purpose of what you need to accomplish.You won't come away as a design master from this book, but it is a wonderful intro to the field of graphic design principles and I would highly recommend it for newbies, or those simply interested in learning graphic design principles for their own personal projects.

I am a software developer, and I have always felt sort of oblivious to anything involving aesthetics. I've been fortunate to work with good designers, but I decided it was time to learn a bit for myself. I asked a designer colleague for a book recommendation, and she suggested this one.It was perfect for me. The book focuses on design as a means a effective communication rather than just a way to make pretty things, and that works a lot better for my brain. The examples are very clear, and the iterative improvements from one design to the next are so clear that even I can tell that they look better (and understand why). The writing is equally effective and easy to consume. It only took me 4-5 hours for my first pass through this book.After finishing the book tonight, I set out to improve my resume. 90 minutes later, I'm shocked with the results. I used to think my old one looked fine, but now I can see so many design flaws in it. The new version, well, I'm sure there's still plenty wrong with it, but looks better than anything I thought I'd ever create on my own.

Great to see an update of this book. The first edition really helped me learn and understand the principles of graphic design. If you work through this book, and apply the design principles to your work, you will definitely learn something about graphic design. Robin Williams also adds a lot of new material to the fourth edition, so you're not really buying the same book again. I'm looking forward to working though this edition as well.

Her paranormal just seems so normal! I loved following the predictions of both the seven year old Cassandra as well as the adult Cassandra. I loved that she experienced the same love life problems as her readers. But was at a disadvantage because she didn’t get the benefits of being a psycic for herself. Great characters and a wonderful plot.

This cheery, humorous novel is a very light read -- just the thing to have on hand in those dreadful days before tax day. Cassandra is a young woman who gets "flashes," pictures of someone's future, that are never wrong. She writes a column for a magazine in Dublin and also starts appearing on TV, to great acclaim. She has a group of good friends who may squabble at times but who are always there for each other. Just a charming book.P.S. I was very relieved that Cassandra didn't get cursed by a spurned god as her namesake did, though there are some psychic glitches here and there...

I really enjoyed this book. It's part Bridget Jones, part Stephanie Plum. The main character seems very real and the book is very entertaining. Cute and not too predictable. Great chic reading.

I just finished reading Jeff Wheeland's semi memoir and I found it profusely entertaining. I say semi memoir in that the author calculated the "real" as 95%. The 5% that is fiction better not be the story at the end of the first chapter describing how he quit the cubicle before taking off to South America or I may have to reduce the star count to four. The other part I hope is real is how he chased the girl in his mind right to the end of the story.Okay, full discloser: Just over two decades ago, I often found myself in a much larger cubicle, aka classroom, where the now gifted author, Jeff Wheeland used to hang out as a student and as a member of our Academic Decathlon team of which I served as the coach. Our paths may have crossed briefly during his illustrious academic career at UC Berkeley, but since then the only information I had about Jeff were bizarre snippets from his teammates and his brother Matt who made an appearance is his book in Argentina. This book is quite believable when I think about the devilish, (I'm plotting something) smile that was often displayed by Jeff when we were both attached to that large cubicle back in the mid-1990s. I was particularly pleased to find out that Jeff and I are now fellow authors. I published Pianist in a Bordello two years ago (shameless plug). But back to Jeff's book, I detect a bit of Bill Bryson and maybe even Carl Hiaasen. Since finishing this literary gem, I also keep asking my self this question: Why didn't I have an adventure like this in my youth? Is it ever too late?

I found the title and beginning of the book intriguing, but it failed to capture my imagination. Not very descriptive or enchanting, "as luck would have it" appears numerous times throughout the book. This would be a passable book, if written by a teenager, but not a very good novel/biography. I wanted to toss it aside many times but I held on until the end, out of respect for the author. I admire someone who is attempting such a huge task and for that, the author has my admiration and should work to hone is craft.

Fantastic and fun read to kick off 2017! If you are feeling that there is more to life than well, your shitty cubicle, then this is the book to pick up for not only some pretty solid inspiration, but also for laugh out loud humor. Author Wheeland demonstrates a brilliant capacity to navigate the English language so as to capture the reader and bring them along with Tyler's adventures around the world. In a time when the world can seem frankly terrifying, this book was a welcome mental escape. Hats off to the author for a successful first novel!!

When I saw the title I obviously knew I couldn't not get this book. Sometimes spontaneous decisions like that let you down, especially with books. Not this one. From the first paragraph, I could not stop laughing. The writing is outstanding and it is one of the funniest books I've ever had the privilege to read. Thank you, Jeff Wheeland - wherever you are.

Bought this to read on the plane over my Christmas travels. I LOVED this book! Written in a way I felt like Tyler was one of my friends. I've had a number of friends who traveled around during summers after college and this gave me a glimps into what their crazy adventures may have been like. Hilariously written. Would definitely recommend this book!

Refreshing and unique writing style that engages the reader immediately with humor. An easy read that moves fast and is hard to put down.

Just chock-full of specialiat information that is evenhanded and yet doesn't try to take on too much, often deferring to the mind-boggling bibliographical recommendations to add more in-depth coverage should you desire that. You're guaranteed to come away from this book with far more knowledge about the Septuagint than you bargained for! A caveat is that only the first part of the book is a cozy laid back read - after that the book assumes knowledge of Koine and Hebrew. Just so you know. But don't let that stop you. Especially of you're starting out learning those languages as I am - it will come in handy later on, too.

Make no mistake- this is a college/seminary textbook. It is extremely well written and documented, just not for the casual reader. Part of the problem is is that there is no such thing as "THE Septuagint". The Septuagint is actually a collection of works translated at different times by different people using different sources, and the sources are no longer available. I think a better title would be "Invitation to Septuagint" (minus the article). This is a very good book for scholars, not so much for the rest of us.

Jobes and Moises Silva has bridged this gap with a comprehensive introduction that is both informative and user-friendly.Invitation to the Septuagint appropriately begins with a brief introduction that details the use of the Septuagint in the academic context of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Scriptures. Readers will exit this introduction with an established understanding and framework for the pages that follow. The book is divided into three major sections: (1) The History of the Septuagint, (2) The Septuagint in Biblical Studies, and (3) The Current State of Septuagint Studies. The most helpful sections for most readers will be the former two sections. Lastly, there are a number of useful appendixes, such as a glossary, and a list of differences in versification between English versions and the Septuagint.The second edition of Invitation to the Septuagint has been revised, updated, and significantly expanded to meet the changing needs of the reader since the first edition. I read this book and Anatomy of an Epidemic when they first came out, I have given several copies to friends and relatives and I also own a digital copies of these books. I have seen the devastation that modern psychiatry has had on myself and those around me. I have been placed on 27 different medications over the last 20 years, within a few months of my first Dr. visit I realized how incompetent the psychiatrists were and how often my diagnosis changed based on nothing more than "Oh well that medication didn't work, I guess we will try another one".Pseudoscience on full display. I was able to learn more about mental illness and myself within the first 6 months of reading books and materials online than all the Dr's. I was seeing combined. I saw the truth and I ignored it over the last 20 years seeking a pill, an easy answer, a single answer to a much simpler set of problems that I was having. I was struggling with anxiety, depression, and OCPD (official diagnosis after being institutionalized). It took 20 years, 27 drugs and one trip to an inpatient facility to get that final diagnosis, which is pointless because the treatments have never worked for me and it's all based around the same categories of drugs I have already tried. So no matter how many times the diagnosis changes I am stuck trying the same classes of drugs.The simple answer is modern psychiatry has no answers, they don't know how it works or why it works (when it does). They have no tests to figure out what they should try etc. I have a few genes that predispose me to have anxiety, depression, and oppositional defiant disorder. None of the mutations I have are the big genes linked to depression and anxiety. I have had these test results for a decade not one Dr. would ever listen to me, no Dr. would take genetic expression into consideration evidence, tests, proof of any kind means nothing to the Dr's. I have had experiences with. It was always a new diagnosis a new explanation, I might as well have been stuck in a revolving door.My point is not to say the drugs will not work for you, I know a few people that the drugs have helped but those people had very different life experiences from mine. My anxiety issues had been present since the age of 3-4 and I had developed OCD behaviors as coping mechanisms and developed a very rigid OCPD way of thinking as a way to control my own inner world. Because I could not control the chaos around me. The whole nature vs nurture argument, basically the drugs caused me personally to feel worse. I have the liver enzyme mutations that cause me to poorly metabolize these drugs which leads to auto-intoxication, and to akathisia induced impulsivity. In my experience the drugs made me much sicker than I actually was, I didn't need the drugs. I needed a better diet, more frequent bowel movements, exercise, friends, a significant other, a part-time job, a dog etc.

This is a fantastic book that gives an inside look at the effects of antidepressant. In the book, Kirsch shares how he went from being a believer in effects of antidepressant to a doubter and finally a disbeliever. He gives all the evidence to back up his claims, showing that antidepressants are no better than placebo. He also shows that the chemical imbalance theory of depression is severly flawed. He points out that drugs that lower serotonin in the brain work just as well as those that increase serotinin. He also show that drugs such as benzodiazapines, opiates, and thyroid hormones work equally as well. This all points towards the conclusion that the placebo effect is the real reason for the improvement. When people are given a drug, they expect they will get better. This is an exeptionally written book that will keep you turning the page to uncover more evidence about the science of antidepressants. It's more than just a book about antidepressants, it's a story about how science works and why it is slow to change despite evidence to the contrary.

Unless you are familiar with the technical writing of Irving Kirsch (and even if you are), you need to pick this book up and read it cover to cover. In one of the most interesting and accessible scientific books I have read since graduate school, Kirsch walks the reader through the research he and his colleagues have done over the past decade which essentially obliterates the chemical-imbalance explanation of medically diagnosed depression. After laying his biases on the table, he clearly demonstrates the cautiousness and the rigor with which he went about understanding the placebo effect, then discovering that most (all?) antidepressants on the market today are essentially enhanced placebos. And he describes his (and others') research in terms few literate adults will misunderstand. Kirsch truly does just what his subtitle promises.But perhaps what encourages me most about this book (which is also why I recommend it to anyone) is that during the final chapter, he does not just leave the reader depressed over knowing that antidepressants are effective placebos. He actually walks the reader through possible alternative treatments. In other words, he deconstructs the so-called Antidepressent Myth, then offers his readers solutions the problems that depression continues to pose. It's a brief chapter, but effective nonetheless.I recommend this book particularly for the student of psychology because it is a great demonstration of how to take complicated research in the social sciences and make it accessible to all readers, something we psychologists ought to do a lot more of. (I speak as a psychologist; there are plenty of other professionals who ought to also take page out of Kirsch's book, figuratively speaking, and let us in on all their secrets.)All around, a great book.

From the get go The Gathering Storm seemed to be one of the great books in the series... It did not dissapoint. This book brings back a lot of scenes from the earlier entries which is great as it allows you to remember how much have our young heroes grown.We finally see a conclusion to many of the storylines that had been dragging for many books. And oh my how did these end! Spoilers below...Masema, Verin, the rebel Aes Sedai, Elaida, Garret & Siuan, Graendal (?)... So many loose ends tied....Egwene's encounter against the Seanchan was the epic consummation of my official liking of this character whom I only started to really like in book 11. Her development in this book is enough for me to like her as a character now. Not only does she display maturity, patience, control... She's a total badass... I got goosebumps reading about her second night serving Elaida... And her quick thinking during the Seanchan raid!!! She rocked this book...Rand Al'Thor... He got very big developments... His second encounter with Sehmirage brought him to the brink of destruction... We see a Rand overwhelmed by the weight of his duty... The end, while a bit on the cheesy end was beautifully written. The emotion, the stakes... It was a personal struggle that somehow felt as epic as his encounters with the Forsaken... He had the most difficult battle so far... The battle against his own soul... And love won. Beautiful.This is one of my top 3 now... There with Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven.

Yes Sanderson is different than Jordan, and in some ways that's a good thing. The story was slipping out of Jordan's hands like Saidar for Elaine during her pregnancy. Sanderson exerts control of the story and gets things done. Tarmon Gai'don starts to feel imminent rather than just being a misty figure on a distant horizon that never gets any closer.Egwene's battle for the white tower continues, and she is incredible in this book. She makes one of the most quotable statements of the series as her confrontation with Elaine hits critical mass: “I’d name you Darkfriend as well, but I suspect the Dark One would perhaps be embarassed to associate with you”.Rand's battle with madness and despair continues. He's on the verge of losing the last battle before it even begins in earnest. It wasn't as powerful a moment for me as some, but many readers were deeply moved by the process of working through that.Verin, a character I paid little attention to throughout the series, has an amazing moment of her own raising herself to the status of a critical player.Perrin and Matt are almost an afterthought in this book, and if there was any time spent on Elayne I've already forgotten it. Aviendha is set up for important personal growth that is yet to come.This book is filled with great moments and the story moves. It is the first time since book six that I thoroughly enjoyed myself almost the entire time.Well done Sanderson and RIP Jordan. Thank you for making it possible for your story to be finished.

Also to RJ traditionalists delight, you will still find descriptions of clothing with special emphasis on degree of cleavage exposed, the women still manage to spank each other more often than at an S&M dungeon party, and they still have to be topless for various reasons LOLTwo favorite characters also make a comeback of sorts - can't wait for the next book.

I don't know how families stood for this as estimates reported close to a million children a year went missing.The story of Sharon Marshall is shocking. It has activated hundreds of thousands around the world.The good news is the advancements made by organizations dedicated to finding lost children has raced the percentages to finding the recently missing to as high as 95 per cent.Read this book. Then join the fight.

I rated this book a five because of the depth and detail of the author in telling this complex, winding story. He hooks you into the plight of poor, beautiful Sharon and the evil rained upon her by Franklin Floyd from the get go. It is a disturbing story-- absolutely heartbreaking. Birkbeck brings Sharon to life. I don't think anyone could read this story without feeling terrible pain for the suffering of Sharon and her son at the hands of a monster. Hopefully, it will also make mean-spirited, judgemental types rethink the plight of young girls forced into the sex trade businesses. We never know what others face in life when we haven't walked in their shoes. I don't think I will ever forget Sharon or Michael or the Bean family or "Stevie" who all crossed paths with the psychopath Floyd. I wish I could forget Floyd because he doesn't deserve one iota of attention. He is the devil. It is beyond tragic but Sharon is finally free of him.

This was an extremely well-written and cohesive telling of an almost unbelievable true crime story. It is obvious that the author did extensive research including interviews of people who were witnesses to this tale of generational kidnapping and murder. The reader comes away with clear portraits of the book's main characters as a result of a well-constructed telling of a story that developed over 25 years. One will have to "Google" the book's chief character, "Sharon Marshall", to learn her true identity, not confirmed until late 2014. The author also offers some eye opening information about the historical difficulties of tracing "missing" children, modern day efforts to improve reporting and tracking, and the efforts of some lawmen dedicated to providing answers for the parents of the missing. One can only hope that future events provide answers to the mysteries of the disappearances of her brother and son. This is an absorbing telling of an astonishing story that leaves the reader wondering how such injustices, personified in the conduct of one man, could go unidentified and unreported for so long.

This is an interesting book, covering the crimes of Franklin Floyd who is known to have murdered one girl and suspected of others. It is known that he kidnapped and raised one child and thought that he murdered her child. The book centers on the search for that child's identity.

A riveting and tragic true story. This poor girl went through so much in her short life that one can only feel terrible sadness for her and her little boy and total disgust with her kidnapper and abuser. Could not put the book down.

I'm giving this incredibly tragic and quite frankly awful story five stars even though I have a reservation. That being that the book has a lot of filler in it. The appendix or the afterword was a slog to get through. However, this is an extremely compelling story and a very sad story so be prepared. How people can be so evil I'll never understand. Highly recommend.

This book kept me hooked from beginning to end. It tells the story of a murderous fiend who, among other heinous crimes, abducted a little girl and reared her at first as his daughter and eventually made her his wife. Then he killed her, and her child. How he managed to achieve this feat and avoid attention in modern society is tantalizingly revealed. If you enjoy going deep into the psychopathic world of a killer and want all the details of an investigation that spans many years and calls for relentlessly determined dedication by law enforcement and associated agencies to hunt down the truth, you will be thoroughly satisfied with this read. Highly recommended.

Cannot get this story out of my head. The author is new to me and I'll most definitely read his other book and keep an eye out for new work.He had a way of bringing this young woman to life through his writing style, almost as if he sensed how she was feeling (joy through her son and her rare friendships/at same time the dread and despair as a constant backdrop. This book read like a unique hybrid of true crime and a memoir (although I get a memoir is telling of one's own story) just using that for lack of a better word. Seemed more personal than a True Crime Biography.This angel could have been ANYTHING with her intelligence and beauty had she not been absolutely destroyed by this monster.Although the ending is no secret, I kept hoping there would be some miraculous last minute twist where she and her boy would be living happily ever after.The author did a great job researching and giving her a voice, in my opinion. He appropriately gave detailed facts without exploiting the hell she was in during her life.

I almost stopped halfway through. A good friend encouraged me to continue. "It gets better," she said. I continued because of that and because I have loved and respected Patti Smith's music and poetry since I was in my mid-teens. I was a charter member of her fan club in the mid-'70s. I also feel it's my responsibility as a committed reader to finish a book that's been written with grit and authenticity.It got a little better, but I continued to feel like I didn't really know where she was or who she was talking about a lot of the time. There were a number of paragraphs I had to read over and over again to track where we were: the equivalent of talking to someone who's speaking almost inaudibly or with a thick, unusual accent. I felt like I was squinting my eyes and craning my neck to track her conversation.There's no doubt of her being a brilliant wordsmith and poet, and that she has shared her grief in a poetic and deep way.At the end of the story, I was disappointed that after all the poignant mentions about her husband Fred and after I, the reader, proving my interest and investment by hanging in there till the end of the book she doesn't share with us what happened. I felt let down.To assuage my disappointment, I googled Fred Smith and learned this (which helped me to have completion):"In 1976, firebrand rock poetess Patti Smith visited Detroit while touring behind her album Radio Ethiopia, and was introduced to Fred Sonic Smith at a party held at Lafayette Coney Island, one of the city's most celebrated hot dog stands. While Fred Smith was married at the time, he and Patti immediately hit it off, and before long a low-key romance blossomed between them. By 1978, Fredwas once again single, and he and Patti were free to go public with their relationship. In 1980, Fredand Patti were married; Sonic's Rendezvous Band had recently broken up, and after a calamitous European tour following the release of her album, Wave, Patti opted to retire from touring. The couple moved to St. Clair Shores, a suburb of Detroit, and quietly settled down to raise a son and a daughter away from the media spotlight and the rigors of a musician's life. Both Patti and Fred continued to write music together, and in 1986, Patti came out of retirement to record the album Dream of Life. Fred wrote much of the material in collaboration with Patti, played guitar on the album, and helped to produce the sessions. In a 1996 interview, Patti said, "Dream of Life was really more Fred's record -- it was all Fred's music, Fred's philosophy." Though it featured the anthemic "People Have the Power," a song that would become a highlight of Patti's live shows, Dream of Life failed to find an audience, despite strong reviews. Sadly, it would prove to be one of Fred's last major projects. In the late '80s, his health went into decline, and on November 9, 1994, Fred Sonic Smith died of heart failure in a Detroit hospital -- ironically, the same malady that took the life of MC5 vocalist Rob Tyner two years earlier." I'll be pondering this one for a while.All of that said, Patti Smith is a deep, unique artist in a soul-less age. For that, I am deeply grateful.

This is the only Patti Smith book I have read so I cannot compare it to her past memoir JUST KIDS or anything else she has written. It appears many reviewers have been put off by the book due to its "arcane" references. I found it a compelling read and as one commentator suggested already, anyone with a bit of intellectual curiosity can explore the books and artists she references quite easily. I make it a habit of writing down every reference I don't know or fully understand for every book I read. I believe I had five note cards filled at end of M Train with things to look up and learn. This is not a straightforward story type of memoir and those seeking that and who have little intellectual curiosity will be disappointed. If you are the type of person who enjoys listening to a very intelligent, well-read and thoughtful person describe moments of their life, past and present, with plenty of references sprinkled in about books and places and observations and experiences then you will enjoy this book. I liked the fact that Smith shows no self-pity and seems to be aging gracefully and clearly has a curious mind.

I've been a fan of Patti's music,and poetry since her first album "Horses". I loved her book "Just Kids",and I own most of her poetry books. Seeing Patti perform is exciting,and she exudes a strange, exotic, sensuality on stage. So...I was so looking forward to" M Train." I felt that it took us on an uncomfortable excursion around the world visiting dead "Icons" she admired,including photos. Coffee,and detective shows were also a strong theme,and if you didn't watch these shows you wouldn't understand some of her passages. I wanted to know more about her life now,aside from visiting coffee shops.This book was not terrible, however, not her best. Sorry Patti.This books title should have been titled "Eulogies".

What sort of book is this? Nothing like "Just Kids." It’s not exactly a memoir and certainly not an autobiography. I’d say more than anything it’s a journal—some entries deal with recent events, some with events in the author’s earlier life, and some describe her fantasies and dream life. So, what’s it about? Certain themes occur and recur here—coffee, fascination with television police procedurals, foreign travel, and grief. The entries describe the life of an aging widow who lives alone with cats. The distinguishing traits of this person’s journal and why it’s eminently worth reading are her renown as a godmother of punk rock and, even more importantly, her tremendous facility with the written word. Furthermore, what kept me immersed in this journal were her descriptions of the books she’s read and re-read, many of which I feel we’ve shared.

I enjoyed Patti Smith's memoir "Just Kids" so much that when I saw she had another book published this year I just had to read it, and I'm glad I did. This book is very different from her earlier memoir, not nearly as linear, for one thing, and not covering a particular period of time. M Train is written in a loose, free-flowing style like a meandering voice of poetry. She dips in and out of time, talking about her parents, her husband Fred whose death she still mourns, her children, and her various travels. Her photographs illustrate the book and they are mostly photos of objects that she loves because each one reminds her of someone--her father's chair, Frieda Kahlo's bed, the boardwalk at Rockaway. One of the narrative threads in her book is her purchase of a small cottage in Rockaway, which she bought just before hurricane Sandy struck and destroyed the boardwalk as well as many of the houses. The book is plotless, but gives a good sense of Smith and of the things that are important to her. People who share her interest in the natural world around us and the artists and writers she knew, will enjoy spending this time with Smith.

It’s through this lens of an African American experience on how the son of a sharecropper meant to escape the life of a farmer, only to learn he never really could, or wanted to. The Good Food Revolution is the best book I've read in a long time. My interest in local and urban agriculture drew me to the book; the intimate stories of individuals and communities that frame that meta-narrative drew me into it. The book arrived on Wednesday. Despite an excessively busy schedule, I had completed it by early Saturday morning, often forgoing much-needed sleep because I simply could not put it down.The rich and engaging stories of individuals and their relationships to one another through family, community, and politics are told through the lenses of race, economics, and, of course, agriculture, all woven together by Will Allen in a style that is at once eloquent and folksy; comprehensive and intimate. Through engaging vignettes, Will Allen's The Good Food Revolution provides glimpses into the history of this nation, with particular emphasis on the different experiences of people of different races. The story is deeply personal, yet told in a way that we can all feel like we are a part of it and of the future envisioned by Will Allen.Will Allen shares stories of past and present racial inequality in a tone that is likely to draw people in, rather than make people feel either guilty or entitled. Unlike the judgmental and accusatory tone often found in such accounts, Mr. Allen's gentle and understanding tone allows him to capture the extreme difficulties faced by people of color without alienating others. By handling even the most shameful aspects of our nation's history with grace and tact, Mr. Allen was able to draw me into the stories without feeling like a would-be savior or presumed culprit for our divided history. Rather, I felt like an invited guest to our shared future.Mr. Allen tells the story of environmental damage wrought by modern agricultural practices in much the same tone, with understanding towards those who are practicing out of ignorance - even admitting some of his own less-than-best practices over the years. This approach is far more likely to result in converts to his way of thinking than the acerbic, arrogant, and accusatory tone that often seem to underlie discussions of both agriculture and race these days.Mr. Allen, who describes himself as a muscular 6'7", seems to have an awareness of the effectiveness of this approach: I also recognized there was a power in bing both huge and polite; I invoked fear in people and allayed it at the same time. (p. 69).By approaching the topic in this way, my eyes were opened to things I wasn't fully aware of before and I was very receptive to hearing it from him. For example, I'm a big proponent of the local food movement and of organic and sustainable agricultural practices. I believe that much of our public policy favors BigAg at the expense of the little guy. Mr. Allen showed me that many of those "little guys" are black farmers:"For black farmers in the twentieth century who outlasted the upheaval of the Great Migration [northward], there were more subtle forces that drove them off their land. In 1982, the bipartisan U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a report called 'The Decline of Black Farming in America' that attempted to understand why black farmers were leaving the profession at a rate of two and a half times greater than that of whites. The committee found that one important reason was that black farmers were small farmers. . . . Almost all of the technological innovations that the United States government had subsidized over the previous decades, the authors acknowledged, were geared toward increasing the productivity of large farms -- and not to making small farms sustainable."There's a lot packed into that quote, including public policy (subsidies), the dangers of over-efficiency in farming, and the racial disparities in loss of farming opportunities. Most importantly, it speaks to our united interest in supporting small, local farmers. Through this and similar sentiments scattered throughout the book, I discovered an unanticipated affinity with people of color, coming to the recognition that they feel even more acutely than others the effects of policies and procedures that are not helpful or sustainable for any of us. It educated me about the challenges facing urban farmers without shaming me for my prior ignorance.This is also reflected in Mr. Allen's description of his intentional method of helping young people want to eat real food - not through lecturing them, but by allowing them to be part of the experience. In describing the findings of a study about young people and nutritional habits, Mr. Allen relates:"The researchers found no significant difference a year later in the vegetable and fruit consumption of children without nutrition education and those who received nutrition classes. The students who received hands-on training in a garden, however, increased their fruit and vegetable intake by more than two servings a day. My own experience tells me that if we can expose young people more often to fresh, delicious food - and create positive emotions around those experiences - that we increase the chances that they will adopt more fresh food into their diet as they begin to make independent food choices later in life." (p. 161)The Good Food Revolution frequently uses gardening and agriculture as a metaphor for life:"My father taught me that the fate of a seed can be predicted by the health of the soil where it takes root. This is true of summer crops. It can be true, in another sense, of people. We all need a healthy environment and a community that lets us fulfill our potential." (p.63)He later described vermiposting in similar terms:"The worms also made me reflect again on what it took to improve the lives of people. You couldn't place folks in the middle of a blighted neighborhood -- without a strong family unit and without easy access to healthy food -- and expect them to thrive. If you could create an environment in which people felt secure and healthy, though, you could provide the possibility of a better life."A counter-balance to this is the story of Karen Parker, who overcame significant obstacles to thrive in the urban agriculture environment. He summed up her experience using another metaphor:"Sometimes on the sidewalks of Milwaukee, there will be a flower or a tall week sticking defiantly out of the tiniest crack in the concrete. I realize that human lives can be like that. People find a way to persist even when they are provided the narrowest opportunity."Wisdom about the value of patience and adversity, among other things, are also woven throughout the book. In a chapter introduction entitled "Grit," Will compares humans to worms, which need to have *just the right amount* of hard material in their diet in order to break down compost, "Human beings need the right amount of grit: not too much, but not too little, either." (p. 207)In addition to the broader philosophical themes, the book offers plenty of sound, practical advice for the would-be gardener, non-profit organization, or even small business start-up. For the gardener, there is specific information about the ratio of elements needed for good compost, specific measurements of Growing Power's aquaponics equipment, and descriptions of tehniques for planting, cultivating, and even preparing produce.For the non-profit or for-profit business, the book includes a very transparent look at the thought processes that underlie the successes - and failures - that brought both Will Allen and Growing Power to where they are today. The book describes various challenges faced by Mr. Allen and the organization, and describes the problem-solving techniques used to over come them. One example is the description of how he and a number of other farmers at a local farmers market decided to organize themselves into a co-op after facing the prospect of being shut down due to city budget constraints.The practical advice and philosophical themes work together to inspire the reader to live a fulfilling life by harnessing her unique gifts, talents, experiences, and passions into something meaningful. Mr. Allen doesn't sugar-coat the value or necessity of hard work and perseverance - it is detailed on every page. But, he also highlights the rewards that can come from working hard at a meaningful endeavor.The book covers a lot of ground and tells the story of many people, but it is not the least bit disjointed. In fact, I would say that the integrated way the book was put together with diverse people, circumstances, and events, is a reflection of the type of community envisioned within its pages.Amy M. What a great book this is. This is not just the story of Will Allen’s journey through Urban Agriculture, but also the story of his family’s hardships and struggles coming North, up and out of South Carolina after the Civil War. It is a lesson in patience, family, and compassion.The Good Food Revolution has Allen take us on his journey that started before he was born, with his family in South Carolina. Sharecropping was no way to make a living in the south according to his mother, so she took her family north for a chance to make a better life for her family. Allen, growing up in Maryland, hated farming with his father. However, he did so out of fear and respect for the man. Those skills and passions that were sown as a young man in Maryland began to sprout many years later while Allen was working as a salesman in Milwaukee. And with years of hard work, trial and error, and support from many well-meaning friends (which Allen shares their amazing stories as well) he was able to begin to reap the rewards of his vision to provide for and nourish communities in need.As a teacher, I would recommend this to other teachers for summer reading. It has deep lessons in patience and perseverance. We don’t always see the benefits of our lessons right away. The student may not see them for years or even recognize that the thought could have been planted for years. If we can find time to plant quality instruction and provide the student with the support, they can grow in to wonderful and successful adults.

The problem with the book is that there is less about Farming and More about the woes and trials of Will Allen. I felt that I wanted to know more about the farming aspect rather than his various cancers. As a bi-racial family and his adventure to The Netherlands, it would have been more fascinating to hear about the agricultural experience that he saw in contrast the U.S. It would have benefitted from some heavy-duty editing and more direction. THAT is what a good editor does.
