Very good.

TRIPLE EXCELLENT!!!

To put it bluntly, The Doors of Perception is a first-hand account of Brave New World author Aldous Huxley's documented experience of tripping balls on mescaline. I've always found it telling how high schools (at least in the eighties and nineties when I attended) would eagerly lead students through an anti-drug perspective of Brave New world without bothering to mention Huxley's later experimentation and promotion of hallucinogenics as positive tool towards psychological and philosophical growth. The Doors of Perception is probably one of the most scholarly and grounded first-hand accounts of a hallucinogenic journey you'll ever read, as Huxley takes periodic breaks to expound upon drugs (not all, mind you) as a tool to aid in understanding the perceptions of those suffering from metal illnesses and seeing how the "genius" sees the world, as well as the religious connotations in and human necessity towards chemically aided transcendence.Huxley would later experiment with LSD and continue to support the clinical and societal benefits of hallucinogenics, and would receive injections of LSD on his deathbed at his request. This book is an a must read for anyone interested in the scholarly pursuit of better living through chemistry, or the history of the modern approach and examination of such drugs.

Before reading this book, I had read 'Brave New World' and a few other essays of Huxley. My image of him and his writing was that he was more concerned with issues that link man to the society(the immediate one he interacts with which also exerts an influence on him like town, city, country etc). While Huxley in these pieces, is no doubt, extremely clear and has convincing arguments, the entire tone of his writing and philosophy was to look for solutions from 'The Without'. All his earlier works have the unmistakable ring of objectivity or externality. The 'Doors of Perception' on the other hand is completely different from anything that Huxley had written before. For the first time, possibly, Huxley looks for answers to the riddle of the human predicament from 'The Within'. The classical mechanics led tone of impartiality/ objectivity is not there. It has been replaced by the subtler quantum mechanics treatment of the observer being as much involved(if not more) in the process of self-realisation and understanding of experience. The book is brilliant and takes one into what possibly lies in the realm of 'The Transcendental Country of the Mind' - but the reader should get into it..and to realise the full potential of the book one has to suspend existing precepts in our limited consciousness. There is an oft quoted zen koan which might make my point clearer. A professor of a university once wanted to know what Zen was all about. So he went to this famous Zen monk and asked him to teach Zen. The monk invited him to first have a cup of tea. He placed a cup before the prof and continued pouring tea into his cup even though it was full. After sometime, the prof got completely agitated and told the Zen Monk, "Why are you still pouring into the cup? Don't you see it? Its already full".The monk replied, "Exactly. How can I teach you Zen when you are so full of yourself in the same way as this tea cup".The same koan applies to reading 'Doors of Perception'..

Aldous Huxley is a man so articulate and inciteful, that he has managed to succeed at a dream seeming impossible to most people who have used psychedelic drugs. His descriptions of the mescaline experience are so enchanting, illuminating, and realistic that experienced users will be amazed, while non-users will have their curiousity peaked. His discussion of the inherent spirituality of the experience and comparisons to Zen Buddhism go to show that not all drugs are destructive. Used correctly, psychedelics may provide some of the deepest insights available into the structure and meaning of the universe. I strongly encourage anyone to read this short and unique book. Unfortunately, those who need to read it the most are the least likely to.

This book simultaneously sythesized everything in my life and changed everything. It is a guide for understanding man's place in the world. enjoy its beauty.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. I sound like a broken record, but if you take the time to read and fill it out, you will memorize the important information such as the normal length of a PRI, and be able to make a sound diagnosis of an ecg.

This is a great book that focuses on II lead EKG arrhythmias with some added information about 12 Lead and heart anatomy. The way it's set up is that it introduces a concept and then repeats it a few different ways to make sure that you understand it. It has fill in the blanks so that it is interactive and keeps you engaged when you're reading. It splits the arrhythmias up based on where they originate in the heart and goes from least complex to most complex. There is also a helpful online component and VERY helpful rip out flash cards that summarize the rules. A few complaints: It does not cover combination arrythmias, which is much more useful when using these skills in real life. For example, patients will likely have an underlying arrhythmia complicated by occasional PVCs. It does not cover anything about pacemakers and paced rhythms. Finally, it is really expensive for a fairly thin workbook that's bulk is practice strips. I have been told that the earlier editions provide exactly the same content, so I would recommend getting that instead. Make sure not to buy used, though because it will be written in, likely have missing flashcards, and you won't have the online access code. Happy arrhythmia learning!

When I first opened this book I hated it. It's written in what I'll call a "workbook" style format from the very beginning where every few sentences there are some blanks you have to mentally fill in and the answers are in the margin. While most of them are super simple it does force you to actually pay attention to what you're reading to.I had a very basic understanding of rhythms entering into it, and upon completion of this book I am confident in my abilities to recognize and identify the basic problems I'll encounter as a paramedic.

Book is easy to read and comes with so many examples in book and online to help you understand! I have a hard time with this but this book had so many great resources to help all kinds of learners! Even provides you with flash cards & e-learning tools.

Liked that this book breaks EVERYTHING down into "layman's terms" making it very easy to understand. Loved the fact that it arrived before it was scheduled; quick shipment on the seller/renter's part. Disliked that it was missing pages from the very back of the book that I would have liked to have used as study tools -which is exactly what they were meant to be used for. Overall great product and I was satisfied with the rental.

Had to buy this for nursing school. Glad I did. It was really helpful and it broke down the different rhythms nicely. It also uses real strips, which helps. Rather than working off of computer generated "perfect" strips, it's nice to work with real-life strips. If it's not a requirement for school, but you need to learn rhythms, I'd recommend it. Of course, like any other book, it's only as good as how much time you put into it.

Arrhythmia information presented in an easy-to-understand and consistent format. For a beginner, this is a great source to learn the basics. For the experienced clinician, it remains a reliable resource.Highly recommended.

Hated this book. Required book for paramedic school. The tests in the back of the chapters were at most a crap shoot. Not all of her interpretations are right.

Overall size was smaller than the original classics and the paper quality was not like the "rag" of the original comics (more dense and shiny).

A great story told well as a classic comic. Really brings the story to life. The movie version with Wes Studi is a must see if you are a fan of this story.

Cooper is a great American author.

Kind of expensive but my grandson loved it.

perfect for budding student and comic reader!

This illustrated classic was well done and gave the a most interesting synopsis of the great classic of James Fenimore Cooper. I really enjoyed and appreciated the excellent background notes which greatly helped understand what was going on in the longer version of the book. The illustrations enhance the story and are colorful and add a lot to the story. I think the biographic information of Cooper at the end of this comic is very well written and helps the reader remember the book and want to read more of Cooper's novels. If you are helping young people as a teacher or parent when they read this book, the Discussion questions at the end are good for leading the discussion. Well done!

The Fires of Babylon: Eagle Troop and the Battle of 73 Easting, by Mike Guardia

Review

"Guardia's writing does justice to the exciting story ... This is ano-holds-barred account, told as truthfully as possible. ... Overall, it's gripping stuff." ~ History of War, July 2015"...an engaging historical account of Eagle Troop, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment's push into Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Storm in February 1991. The author links together detailed accounts of Eagle Troop's Battle of 73 Easting derived from personal interviews and memoirs of soldiers from Eagle Troop to give a minute-by-minute account ofthe battle. This book is not an argumentative piece, nor does it try to persuade the reader to view events under a particular lens; it is simply a description of events as told by the soldiers who lived through the United States' first major tank battle since World War II. The author, Mike Guardia, is a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as an armor officer from 2008 to 2014...well written and informative given the first-hand accounts and level of detail derived only from extensive research and a willingness to provide accuracy in detail. I recommend this book to casual readers interested in personal accounts of the battle and to Army leaders interested in how this battle relates to the U.S.Army Operating Concept tenets and core competencies." ~Military Review, June 2016"Fires is a day-by-day account of Eagle Troop's breakthrough of the Iraqi lines. The 12 American tanks -which by any calculation didn't stand a chance - destroyed more than 50 enemy vehicles within 23 minutes and plowed a hole through the Iraqi front. America's armored force more than proved itself able to overcome the T-72. Guardia characterizes the Battle of 73 Easting as "the largest tank battle in American history and [it] has since been regarded as 'the last great tank battle of the [20th Century...a solid contributor to the lore on Operation Desert Storm."- Armor Magazine, August 2016"...a great book for those who are interested in modern tank combat, Operation Desert Storm and Army leadership when under fire...Highly Recommended- AMPS, September 2015"Author Mike Guardia not only carefully researched the Battle of 73 Easting and Eagle Troop's role in decisively defeating the Iraqi enemy, but also tells the story of the men of Eagle Troop and their cohesiveness as a unit which he ascribes to Capt. McMaster's leadership and to the professionalism of the troop's officers and NCOs....I recommend Fires of Babylon for the insight it gives into what it takes to build a well-trained and cohesive unit, and how important good leadership is to unit morale and, ultimately, performance."- Society of 3rd Infantry Division, October issue of Watch on the Rhine., October 2015

“The Fires of Babylon” for a civilian like me truly helped me understand Operation Desert Storm of 1991 and modern warfare. The book tells the story of the U.S. ground war against the Iraqi troops led by Saddam Hussein. Mike Guardia, formerly an Army Armor officer, leads the reader through the transition of the American Army in the Vietnam era into the 1990s, by telling the story of the officers and soldiers of Eagle Troop in the U.S. Army’s 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He gives us the story of their training in the U.S. and Germany which included everything from acclimation to the desert, preparations for chemical warfare, to the writing of their wills and last testaments and having pre-deployment photos taken in case they did not return. Their wills were written after Thanksgiving, and on December 4th they flew to Saudi Arabia. Once there, each soldier had to drink three bottles of water per day to survive in the desert and learn to battle the abrasiveness of the sand, which prompted many to repair their boots with duct tape. Then there were unexpected roadblocks like when they were being bussed to their battle stations by Arab drivers. There was an unexplained stop when all the drivers left their buses. The soldier told our author he thought to himself, “Why are we stopping the war for a prayer call? We’re already here in the desert, let’s get moving!” Finally on February 22nd the Eagle Troop drove their tanks into Iraq. After a month long air campaign against the Iraqi Army, the ground battle that lasted 100 hours began on February 23rd and was described in great detail, battling a sandstorm as well as the Iraqi tanks. The story of this battle and victory in the desert brought me a much better appreciation of what the U.S. soldier endured then and have endured for centuries. This book is an excellent read for those who want to understand the history of Operation Desert Storm and the U.S. Army.

Excellent well written and researched the first true book on one of the most famous tank battles in history. It is not about division running around the battlefield, It is about a Cavalry Troop of approx. 140 men lead by a Captain taking on a bigger and well equip force and showing how the US Military transformed itself from the old Vietnam Days to a modern Military Juggernaut! The story is about the men first , the tactics and the equipment...The battle is studied at West Point, this book should be part of it as well!

In a political era when scandalously few of the United States’ political leaders have been shaped by military service, this book provides a fascinating look at a formative moment in the career of HR McMaster, who as this reviewer sets pen to paper serves as the country’s National Security Advisor. The brief survey of an armored battle that takes pride of place in a world that sees few such large-scale engagements of tanks tells as well the satisfying story of the U.S. Military’s improbable feat of transformation from post-Vietnam malaise through to the disciplined, strategically minded force that destroyed Saddam Hussein’s forces in the First Gulf War.Guardia’s FIRES OF BABYLON chronicles the U.S. Army’s pivot from an anti-Soviet blocking mission that had lost its relevance by the time the Berlin Wall crumbled to a highly fluid challenge from operating positions in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and eventually Iraq itself. It was commanders like McMaster (a Captain at the time of 73 Easting) who brought the discipline and savvy that produced overwhelming military success against an Iraqi force that was judged to be capable of kicking butt on the battlefield. In the end, only one butt got kicked in an epic slaughter that could have led to the removal of Saddam but for the political considerations that led the first President Bush to pull up short.
Yet none of this was foreordained. Things might have turned out badly. That they did not is a story that deserves retelling, particularly in the environment I mention in this review’s first paragraph: one where a highly disciplined fighting force enjoys emotional support from a populace that has little real understanding of what it takes to fight.Guardia performs his narrative duty in a way that puts flesh and blood, face and voice to a limited number of armored warriors who prepared to face down Iraq and then did so with stunning speed and results. We follow them from Germany to Saudi and then across the berm into Iraq. This reader is struck by how severely intelligence had over-rated the Iraqi troops that waited there, and by how little our armor and infantry could have known of that until contact had been made. The opposite would have been calamitous.Guardia teases out the humanity of these soldiers, together with a number of other fascinating threads that include the shifts of military technology that were taking place at the time (for example, in armored troop carriers and among the tanks themselves); the critical pivot-point of professional and disciplined small-unit leadership; and the powerful strategy and tactics that were brought to bear on Saddam’s challenge. Not one of these themes has any element of ‘automatic’ in it. Each is the product of sustained effort in a single direction. Else Saddam might have stood. This reviewer also appreciates the author’s description of how quickly and savagely the desert can turn from friend to foe, and how the wrong turns can effectively incapacitate an otherwise overwhelming force.A superbly well chosen collection of photos and the now obligatory (after Band of Brothers) ‘After the Storm’ trace the lives and careers of soldiers come home.Four stars for a well informed and nicely told story that both illuminates and teaches, perhaps without the polished writing that would have earned it a fifth.

I just finished reading this over the Memorial Day weekend. In general, I liked the book, the author was clear in what he was presenting and showed it in a way that gave you a glimpse of the unit and what they went through. My critic would be this was almost like reading through an AAR or general recap of the battle with just a few paragraphs about some of the individual people involved. The book lacked some depth in telling the story of the individual people, what the unit was going through before, during and after the battle. What was going on in the mind of the tank drivers as they crested the hill and came upon the Iraqi tanks? What was the loader thinking about as he loaded round after round? Did any of their tanks take any hits that bounced off their armor? Did they take any hits from the BMPs they attacked at close range? What was going through the minds of the infantry soldiers in the Bradley’s as they heard the battle going on around them or when they had to dismount? Why was there such tension between the battalion and brigade commanders and the troop leaders?Again, I liked the book from the historical aspect of learning more about this very significant battle, but I wish there had been more depth to the book and explored more of the emotions, thoughts, and insight from the men who were there. I’d still recommend the book for others to read.

Great bookRecommend for every tanker. Very well written, ever tanker should enjoy this book. I only hope all the guys got the help they needed.

Mystic Tales from the Zohar

From Library Journal

The 13th-century Zohar, consisting of theosophical theories concerning the Godhead and the Torah, is the central text of Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism. Woven through it are several narrative passages or stories. Rabbi Wineman, a specialist in Jewish mystical studies, presents eight of these stories in his own translation, with notes and commentary. The tales deal with the themes of sin and repentance, death, exile, redemption, and resurrection. Wineman's commentary expertly elucidates these esoteric stories. He includes excellent essays on the Zohar and Kabbalistic theory, especially an explanation of the ten Sefirot, or aspects of the deity. There has been a recent upsurge of interest in Jewish mysticism, and the material in this book, while scholarly, can be readily understood by interested lay readers.?Robert A. (Library Journal ) --Library JournalWineman's book, comprising eight narratives from the Zohar, is a remarkable example of how a modern scholar interprets a medieval text using a multitude of Jewish sources and modern scholarly tools such as etymology, historical contexts, and parallels. (Many of the parallels and historical notes cited by Wineman point to the fact that the author of the Zohar lived hundreds of years after Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, who is traditionally credited with being the author of this most popular kabbalistic work.) One is amazed at Wineman's phenomenal knowledge in arriving at his interpretations and his highly readable original English translation of these stories. Even people familiar with the Bible and Talmud must marvel at the way he explains the zoharic narratives by citing midrashim which may even have escaped the eyes of rabbis and others who possess a good background in this literature. --Joshua J. Adler, The Jerusalem Post, February 18th, 2000
