Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine

From the Back Cover

Following a topical-chronological structure, and using Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology as a template, this book traces the historical development of the most significant Evangelical doctrines from the early church, into the Middle Ages, across the Reformation and post-Reformation eras, and through the modern period. Unlike the vast majority of historical theology books, it is first arranged topically---chapters treat the inspiration of Scripture, the Trinity, the atonement, the Holy Spirit, justification, the nature of the church, and the final judgment and eternal punishment; thirty-three doctrines in all---then developed chronologically, with each doctrine traced through the four periods. Limiting references to the most significant church leaders, biblical scholars, and theologians who have contributed to the development of these doctrines, the book cites the actual words of Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others to stimulate a sense of connection with the past. Moreover, it carefully documents the most accessible references from which the citations are taken, for the purpose of making further study as easy as possible.

“Historical Theology” is a concise, consequential, constructive, conversant, courteous introduction to how many major doctrines have become part of today’s systematic theologies. Gregory the Great said about Scripture, “It is almost like a river, both shallow and deep, in which a lamb may walk and an elephant swim.” “Historical Theology” is not Scripture, but it also has value for lambs and elephants, as it can be used as a textbook for the student, a convenient reference book for the pastor and an accessible survey for the beginner. I think my favorite things about it were the creative topical arrangement (correlated with Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”), the clear writing style and the helpful glossary of leaders and movements. My kindle edition did have one page where some information about elders and deacons was typographically garbled, but it wasn’t a big deal. For me, the book helped refine my own systematic theology, as well as fanned the flame of my devotion. Good stuff for lambs and elephants and for the head and the heart.

I waited for Gregg Allison's, Historical Theology for over a year. After carefully devouring over 700 pages, Allison's work does not disappoint.Historical Theology is patterned after Wayne Grudem's, Systematic Theology and follows a topical-chronological framework that makes studying historical theology a real delight. For those familiar with historical theology, a discipline that is often presented in a dull and dreary manner, Allison's work is a gift that will be utilized and appreciated by many Bible students and pastors.Historical Theology is arranged in seven sections:Part 1: The Doctrine of the Word of GodPart 2: The Doctrine of GodPart 3: The Doctrine of HumanityPart 4: The Doctrines of Christ and the Holy SpiritPart 5: The Doctrine of the Application of RedemptionPart 6: The Doctrine of the ChurchPart 7: The Doctrine of the FutureEach section follows a predictable pattern that moves readers through the respective doctrinal developments that begin with the early church and proceed to the middle ages, the Reformation, and the modern period. The author presents historical developments in a fair and gracious manner. He alerts readers to matters that pertain to heretical proclivities as well as orthodox dogma.Historical Theology will no doubt serve as the standard textbook in Bible College and Seminaries for many years to come.5 stars[...]

Not exactly light reading but if you want a fair and balanced approach to historical theology this is the book. Works in conjunction with Wayne Grudem's "Systematic Theology." I am about to finish up my Master's in theology and it would be a great textbook for a graduate class. So what I am saying is someone that is just entering in the faith or has a limited understanding of history might find the language a bit challenging, but it is worth the challenge. Get a good theological dictionary and you will be good to go.

I had to purchase this text for a class I was taking. It was a good companion to Grudem's Systematic Theology text which was also required.

I like the way the information is collated. Makes things easier to grasp.

This book is a really helpful timesaver for the serious student. It is well worth the investment for your library.

Gregg Allison has provided a wonderful resource to the church with this new work in Historical Theology. The introduction is worth the price of admission and the content is well documented throughout for further research. The work is both informative and practical and will be of great use to the English speaking Christian world. Protestants, who can at times dwell too little in the post Augustine, pre Luther time period of church history, will be especially helped by this work.Having taught with Gregg on historical theology for church planters and worked with him on various projects, I highly recommend his work. Dr. Allison understands the importance of historical theology for the day to day mission of the church. This volume will help deepen preaching, overcome our chronological bias and build God's people in the faith. Highly recommended.

I expected a truly informed book of WWII aircraft carrier combat. That is, I wanted to know how the two sides used the assets they had available and why they chose to use them in that way. I wanted to know how a carrier group goes about trying to protect itself while trying to inflict harm on its enemies. I wanted to know what tactics the torpedo bombers adopted to successfully approach enemy shipping and what tactics the defending aircraft used to destroy the torpedo planes before they could launch while avoiding their own flak. None of these things are presented. For example, Imperial Japanese Naval air operations officers Genda and Fuchida are referred to as geniuses but I have no idea why. What was it about the way they chose to do plan air operations that qualified them as geniuses? What we have here is a fairly standard treatment of the most famous WWII Pacific aircraft carrier engagments. I wanted to feel the anti-aircraft gunfire riddle my wings and smell the blood on a burning flight deck. I wanted to know what formations the various aircraft used on various missions and why. I wanted to know how it was possible that a pilot could maintain such good navigational skills while engaged in life or death combat that he could rendevous with a ship that was no longer where it was when he flew off the deck. Instead we get that a certain squadron launched from a certain carrier attacking a certain other carrier and either did or did not achieve a number of hits.Admittedly, I am spoiled having just read Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War. Oh, what might have been! If the author had drawn character portraits as concisely and described battles as vividly as Foote, that would have been a book!

good seller, item as described

I have spent a lot of money on this book which contains lots of information about bloody fighting in WW II only to realize that the author used MOSTLY american literature. It is a shame that he did not consider some japanese books also.

The greatest wwII book ever written. Degan is a masterful writer. A must for any wwII history buff.

This is a very well-written and neutral history of the oil and gas industry worldwide, from its beginnings in the U.S. in the 1850s up through the end of the Gulf War in 1991. I read this over perhaps eight months a couple years ago, having had been in the industry for about 18 years. I wish I'd read it when I first started working; I think my appreciation of my particular engineering field and its place in the context of the industry would've been greatly enhanced. The Prize doubles as both an extremely interesting story and a superb reference thanks to a comprehensive index. My only complaint is that the regional maps are generally sub-par and often don't indicate half the points of interest mentioned in the text. This is merely an annoyance though and doesn't detract much from the experience.I don't have much else to add. The Prize is written for the layman, so anyone with even a passing interest in the industry ought to check it out. I'm most of the way through the sequel The Quest, which covers the next twenty years or so of history though in quite a different manner and with generally poorer writing in my opinion. The Prize is a must buy!

This one book has helped me view current events from a much more sophisticated perspective than before. Although oil is the connective tissue throughout, I learned immensely about World history, human psychology, war, the Middle East, imperialism, colonialism, and so many thing in between (e.g., 42 Gallons in a barrel of crude!). Without a hint of exageration, I learned more from this book than any other I can recall (less The Bible, and maybe The Brothers Karamazov which I just started reading!). It took me ONE YEAR to get it read (not sure why), but I committed to finishing it before starting any other read, and that I did. I am immensely thankful to the author for putting this massive piece together - truly a feat, if you ask me. What will come once this infamous resource evolves (or comes to an end)? A couple of centuries and so much.... everything. Phenomenal read, highly recommended!!!

This is the definitive book on the "Age of Oil" and its journey from fruition to modern day. Incredibly well researched and insightful. The Prize describes how this once seemingly useless substance served as a platform for building global economies and increasing human productivity. Oil; money; power ... the terms are synonymous. This is the third copy of this book that I have purchased. The first two are on my shelf, and the third I gave away at a white elephant gift exchange.I originally found out about this book through an Energy Economics course I was taking during my undergrad at Michigan Technological University. The course was a hybrid undergraduate/graduate course, and one of the differentiators was that the graduate students had to read The Prize and write a paper on it.This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the oil industry, its history, its geopolitics, and how oil has shaped policy and war for the past 100+ years.

If you want to know oil's history and story, and why it remains a dominant feature of humans' existence for the last 100 years, this is the book for you. Along with oil's story, you will learn the how and why driver of many of the historical events of the last 100 years.Given this book's scholarship, the writing is clear and will likely hold your interest as you become educated about the dominant player in the ubiquitous Energy Industry.

This is basically a history of the use of oil from its earliest mass production days in the mid 1800's up to today. This could be a dry topic but is written mainly as a series of narratives about the characters in the search of, production of, and control of the resource. The character driven approach makes this a surprisingly easy read for a fairly long book.It focuses on the effects of oil on the economies of both consuming and producing nations as well how access to oil affects the political power of nations. It makes clear how this access to the energy source affected all nations and was a huge driver in transforming the global economy.Highly recommended.

Her interest in fashion resulted in Ashley being on the founding team of the first Digital Age no-Photoshop fashion magazine. Nobody else on the team knew anything about PR so Ashley volunteered for the job. She didn’t know anything about PR either, but she got 180 media features in seven countries in eight months, and the launch exceeded anybody’s expectations.Realizing that she had a talent and a process that worked, and wanting to be her own boss, she started her own company, Appleseed Communications, which continues to thrive and grow. Many of us can’t afford her rates and she wanted to help more people, so she created a training course to teach people how to do their own publicity. Close to 2000 people have received her training. The proven lessons from years of a successful PR business and PR training are in this book. It demolishes myths about PR, gives the whys for publicity, and motivates you to take action. It tells how to decide what your ideal media outlet is, how to find and contact the key person in the media outlet you are pitching, and how to rise above the noise of hundreds or thousands of pitches that the reporters or producers or podcasters receive weekly. There is a link to a complimentary webinar that complements the book.Ashley interweaves her personal story throughout the book. You will cry and celebrate with her as you see her trials and triumphs. The focus of the book is national publicity and most of her business clients are entrepreneurs, but the principles apply to anybody. I have used what I learned in her training to get local features and speaking engagements about the nature preserve I manage. If you want more visibility for your business or organization, buy this book!

Crouch does things a little differently than a lot of the PR strategists out there.(And according to those who have put her methods to the test, they really do work.)Since I don't have any PR campaigns cooking at this precise moment, my interest in the book was more theoretical than practical for the time being... but I'll be sure to update this review if I or my clients achieve smashing success using her methods over the next few months or years. ;)For now... I can at LEAST say that you probably haven't already read about the methods she describes here. Her approach to PR is fresh and distinct, and the book is written in an easy-to-read, lighthearted tone. 5/5, would purchase again.

Ashely’s content landed us a Kate Spade and Tory Burch sponsorship! It works!! She is masterful in her craft! She is strategic and thinks outside of the box! Love her art - love her work. Thank you Ashley!

Ashley breaks past the old and broken methods of getting PR and shows you why that doesn't work anymore....plus waht you can do now that WILL WORK! Not only do I have her book but I heard her speak recently and cannot wait to learn more from her.

The Tangled Wing: Biological Constraints on the Human Spirit, by Melvin Konner

Review

“How wonderful to have a new Tangled Wing which incorporates the rich findings made in the last twenty years in the fields of evolutionary and behavioral biology. We find the same graceful writing as in the original classic and the same facility to clarify complex issues and to come to stimulating conclusions.” ―Ernst Mayr, Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

This is a review of the Holt Paperback version of the updated book ONLY, not the work per se. Bought new directly from Amazon (about $20) I think this is probably the version most people are likely to buy now. I give the work 5 stars for obvious reasons, but the quality of the paperback is poor in my opinion. I've seen many print-to-order books that are much better in quality than this one. The paper and print are not quite newspaperish, but they are More like that than not. The print itself is fuzzy and the pulp-like texture of the paper only makes it harder to read comfortably. (Maybe it IS the pulp-like quality of the paper itself that makes the print so unclear?) It is not as bad as a cheap mass market paperback; the paper is at least white, when new; but for a first rate text like this it is a shoddy production. I bought the updated version to supplement my 30+ year-old hardcover copy of the first edition (also published by Holt, way back when). My 1982 copy is still, after all these years, an order of magnitude better in terms of material quality than this new version "hot of the press." This work is so good that I will not read it in this low-grade condition, even if "new," and will now go in search of a hardcover copy of the updated edition, and hope for better results. This work deserves far better treatment by its publisher than it has received. And so do its readers!

This is a long thick book. The main text is close to 500 pages. Reading it is not easy. I find it necessary to make serious attempts to stay focussed in reading the book. At times it can be repetitive. But if you are lucky enough to read it through back to back, the gain will be immense. The plan of the book is as follows:An introduction warns the reader not to romanticize exotic cultures.Part 1 (Ch. 1 to 8) explains clearly that at least the foundation or scaffolding of our behaviors are determined by our genes. BUT at the same time, genetically related wirings of the brain CAN be modified by the environment. In this part of the book some basic neurology related to human behavior is discussed.Part 2 (Ch. 9 to 15) explores basic human emotions, urges and behaviors. The psychology, neurology and biochemistry are all discussed. I am a practising physician, and I am most rewarded by the chapter on "Gluttony". I now know why my patients have difficulties in losing weight. I am surprised that I was not taught about all these in medical school! These chapters can at times read tedious but as I have said they are very rewarding indeed.Part 3 (Ch. 16 and 17) reminds the reader (even though grounds have been covered throughout the earlier chapters) that in spite of the importance of genes in influencing over behavior, NURTURE is also important. The author somehow seems to change the focus of the book and speculates upon the future of human beings and whether we are still able to save ourselves from self-destruction through follies.Part 4 (Ch. 18) gets even further away from the earlier chapters. It is very moving. It is about social justice and the thesis is that human selfishness can be modified because of the importance of NURTURE upon our behvior.Pert 5 (Ch. 19) is very short, only 4 pages long. To me it's about spirituality. So what have you got here? A long book on human behavior and the author's manifesto on how to save the world. I do not necessarily agree with him, but the book does teach me a lot. Some of it may even be useful for my clinical practice. My only slight disappointment is that this book, a book on human behavior, almost leaves religion out. It only mentions it tangentially (pg 481 - 482).

Melvin Konner's The Tangled Wing is a shining example of the way science is done. The depth of scholarship is truly inspiring - Konner remarked that there were originally two hundred pages of notes, "the meticulous preparation of which added at least a year to the project" (they were published online to keep the cost of the book down). Warning: after reading this book, the methodology of other authors might seem pathetically underwhelming by comparison. The next two books I read as part of my master's degree in engineering management seemed ludicrously speculative by comparison, with poor or nonexistent empirical support. A joke, in short, made all the more laughable due to the stark contrast with the depth of scholarship displayed in The Tangled Wing.Scientific authors often have to trade off between popular appeal of their books and usefulness to the academic community. Konner settled that compromise more on the academic side, but I wouldn't say this book is wholly inaccessible to those outside the academic community (my education is in engineering, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it). If you don't mind wading through a little jargon about neurotransmitters and brain regions, there are plenty of fascinating gems to be discovered. And laymen might be just as impressed by the methodology of a real scientist as they are by the discoveries garnered thereby. There is a chapter about weight regulation titled 'Gluttony' that I found particularly interesting. This is a deceptively complex topic that is subject to much pseudoscience and uninformed opinion, so it is refreshing to see the bright light of science shone upon it. I'll summarize some of the findings:"Between the age twenty-five and fifty-five, the average American puts on an additional twenty pounds; all this takes is an energy intake that exceeds energy output by one third of one percent. " The sensations of hunger and satiety (fullness) are regulated by a complicated system using various forms of feedback, and tiny variations can make all the difference. "40 to 70 percent of human variation in plumpness is genetic, as measured in various ways in many studies. In a classic adoption study led by Albert Stunkard, 540 adult Danish adoptees were compared with their biological and adoptive parents. The subjects ranged from thin to extremely obese, and this dimension was highly predictable from the fatness of either biological parent but not from either or both adoptive parents...the family environment had no apparent effect.""The meal-ending signal system is framed by the long-term fat-regulation system." In other words, when you have more body fat than your "set point," you feel full after eating less food than you otherwise would, triggering a loss of weight. "Unfortunately, it works both ways. Go on a diet, reduce your fat mass, and pretty soon your meal-ending sensors don't hear so well anymore." So lose weight and it takes more food to make you feel full, stimulating weight gain. This is combined with another insidious effect: the body regulates its fat content by varying its metabolic rate, so losing weight means the body reduces its energy consumption."Energy output is reduced by even a small (10 percent) weight loss, deliberate or not, so a 'formerly obese person requires approximately fifteen percent fewer calories to maintain a 'normal' body weight than a person of the same body composition who has never been obese.' This is due to an 18 percent decrease in energy use at rest and a 25 percent decrease in energy use while active." So an obese person who loses weight may 1) require more food to feel full than they used to and 2) their metabolism may decrease so their body naturally burns fewer calories than it used to. It's as if the body is striving to achieve a certain amount of body fat, called the "set point," which varies from person to person. These two factors explain why weight loss is rarely achieved in the long term. Why does the human body seem to be designed for obesity? We evolved under hunter-gatherer conditions, when periodic food deficits were the norm. Studies of modern hunter-gatherer societies show that mild to severe food deficits are common, during which times stored fat confers survival advantage. This was probably also true in our species' history. "Natural selection could not provide us with an effective mechanism for keeping our weight down in times of abundance for the simple reason that it was giving us quite the opposite, a system that piles on excess fat in times of abundance, stores to draw on during shortages. Since there was rarely continuous abundance during the whole of human evolution - and certainly not combined with physical indolence - natural selection cannot have prepared us for such conditions."
