Hands down Dan Abnett is the best authort the Black Library has. His knowledge of the universe and inventive prose usually make for an entertaining read. However, this piece was just plain boring. It reads like a history book, which is what it is intended to be, however, for fans of the 40k universe, it lacks a couple important things: character, action (there's plenty of action, but all described from a rather academic and bird's eye view, and of course, the 40k flavor. The juxtaposition of a hi-tech yet brutally superstitious culture is what interests the reader. for example, the Sabbot World's crusade doesn't seem to mention Gaunt's Ghosts at all. Well, come on! His overview of the Sabbat World's Crusade was... just... dry.The hardcore fan will love it. It's a beautiful book. But lacks a certain spark.

Tactica Imperium: A History of the Later Imperial Crusades is a great addition to the growing and very detailed backstory and history of the Imperium of Mankind. For those who already have played and followed the growing mythology of Games Workshop's Warhammer40K will enjoy this additional source of background information. Those who have been reading the Gaunt books from the Black Library division of Games Workshop will also recognize the principal author of Tactica Imperium. Dan Abnett lends his excellent writing skills and deep knowledge of the Warhammer40k universe to this source book. One of the battle's even describes a Crusade which Abnett has been writing about for years: The Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The Battle for Lyubov gives the readers a new vantage point on this long-standing Crusade which has been pretty much seen through the eyes of Gaunt and his Tanith First-and-Only Imperial Guard regiment. I like the fact that even without falling back to mentioning the Tanith in this battle, Abnett still makes it exciting and vivid to read. There's been talk that Abnett will be ending the adventures of Gaunt and the Tanith. If he does then I hope he writes more stories about the Sabbat Worlds Crusade but through other point of views. There's a total of four pivotal battles describes and detailed in Tactica Imperium. Abnett does a great job in writing out all four. I especially like the insight he gives to the different mindset the Adeptus Astartes has towards defending the Imperium. Some who read this particular battle for Naxos might find the Space Marines of the Iron Snakes Chapter cold, calculating and emotionless, but in the end it does show that they look at the broader scope of how to defend the Imperium. Even if it means sacrificing the very people they've been tasked to protect.Tactica Imperium: A history of the Later Imperial Crusades is a wonderfully written source book which should satisfy any fan of Warhammer40K. It's vivid, detailed and at times thrilling like a full-blown action novel. Dan Abnett continues to cement his status as the Black Library's premiere house author and here's to hoping he continues to write any future Tactica Imperium books.

The artwork in this book is very good. Fans of Warhammer 40K and Battlefleet Gothic (both are science fiction miniature games from Games Workshop) will find this book an excellent reference guide for any campaigns they wish to create as there are maps provided of key locations. The description of the four battles that occur provides the background material to help any game player design a strategic battlefield that extends beyond one company or battalion, but across planets and solar systems.Readers of the Warhammer 40K series will recognize some of the locations from other stories. Overall a light read, took a couple of hours. Solid product and fans will enjoy it as a reference book.

Time Management from the Inside Out: The Foolproof System for Taking Control of Your Schedule and Your Life, by Julie Morgenstern

Amazon.com Review

In Organizing from the Inside Out, author Julie Morgenstern used three main strategies to whip a living space or office into shape: "analyze, strategize, attack." Using the same system, Morgenstern now shows readers how to get rid of chaotic schedules in order to live more comfortable and productive lives. Morgenstern likens a cluttered schedule to a cluttered closet. For example, a closet is typically "crammed with more stuff than storage," and a schedule is typically "crammed with more tasks than time." Those who fear "time management" because they worry about living uncreative or overly scheduled lives will find themselves reassured by Morgenstern's ability to customize her system. The most important thing readers must do, she emphasizes, is to create a time management system that fits one's personal style--whether it be spontaneous and easily distracted or highly regimented and efficient. "Just as everyone's living room looks different, reflecting the individual's or family's values and priorities, everyone's time management system will look different, reflecting what's important to him or her," she explains. Fortunately, readers can easily customize her excellent advice while learning how to create a personal time map, streamline routine tasks, conquer procrastination and chronic lateness, and manage all the inevitable crises and distractions of daily life. Speaking of procrastination, what better time than now to try this book out--ridding yourself of all that draining clutter so you can get on with living the life you want? --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

Best-selling author of Organizing from the Inside Out, Morgenstern takes a similarly practical approach to time. If one thinks of time has having "edges" (rather than being amorphous), she explains, then it becomes as finite as spaceDand, consequently, just as manageable. Morgenstern believes that there are three primary reasons why people have difficulty managing time: "technical errors" (miscalculating the length of a task); "external realities" (new baby, new job) and "psychological obstacles" (perfectionism). What makes her program work, she attests, is that instead of trying to change people's natural behaviors and preferences, she encourages them to expand upon whatever is working already, no matter how overwhelmed they may feel. It all starts with knowing what one's big picture values and goals are (e.g., maintaining a happy marriage, excelling at one's career) and prioritizing those with the help of an ingenious device she's created called a "Time Map." Then, Morgenstern helps the reader apply her "SPACE" system ("sort, purge, assign a 'home,' containerize and equalize")Dthe nitty-gritty of time managementDto align one's to-do list with the Time Map. Everything one does (from important phone calls to major projects) must have its time and placeDeven relaxation and fun ("There is no such thing as spare time"). Morgenstern's simple book presents a superb, sound program for "creating a life that nurtures you and makes you feel good." (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Great read.. She gives you another way to understand and look at time management.

That is the second copy I buy, this time to give as a gift to a friend.

Great book; if only I can apply the principles. Very well written and organized (the point of the book). Service provider delivered on time and the book is in excellent condition.

This is one of the best books i have ever read. Feels like the author is talking to you directly. One takeaway is you need to act on her suggestions after reading the book.

Perfect. I use this text in my teaching of a college level course. For everyone who has been trying to be organized...this is the book to start with !

This seems like it would be a good book for those with problems managing their time. I started to read it and got distracted and then just couldn't find time to finish. Maybe I need a book on time management to get through this one.

The Monday after Thanksgiving I set out on a new career adventure. To partake of the training I need for this new career, I'm studying my new trade by correspondence course (the old-fashioned kind where you receive lessons in the mail). The course will go for six months, so I'll need to be self-motivated to get through all the material, learn the underlying wisdom and techniques, and complete the exercises.Fortunately, I found Ms. Morgenstern's book during a visit to my local library. This came at the perfect moment for me and I began incorporating 30-minute sessions with Julie's book into my daily study periods. With the help of Time Mapping, I've used the book to structure (and make ongoing adjustments to) my study goals. With the help of chapters such as Sort, Containerize, and Purge, I've become better at focusing my time to get through my to-do list and thus make better use of my leisure time.I *feel* better about how much time I have, even though I've just added a big commitment in the form of 22 hours of study per week. I've been able to schedule realistic time slots for my other tasks as well as plenty of down-time. It's amazing how this book has helped me expand my concept of available time.Using the visual aids in the book, and also researching more options online, I've finally chosen a planner that really works for me. This was a liberating step as I had not even realized I'd chosen a planner that wasn't right for me. I'd been subconsciously blaming myself for not making proper use of my old planner, but Julie's book helped me see through that defeatist thinking and find the solution. She works that magic in other areas also, helping demystify foggy habits such as procrastination and chronic lateness.[Incidentally, since you're considering tools for better use of time, you might enjoy a little tip on planners that I stumbled across. While searching for your perfect planner (or, as I am, while getting through the final weeks of a waning year), you can supplement by using At-A-Glance QuickNotes Daily Planner. It comes as a tear-off pad with undated pages (you fill in the dates yourself) and each page has hole punches for optional storage in a ring binder. The cost is approx. five bucks for a pad of 50 sheets - which makes it an affordable way to experiment. It's a great way to practice structuring your day in a large format where you can spread out and really go ballistic.]I've checked TIME MANAGEMENT FROM THE INSIDE OUT out of the library twice in a row so I could finish it. I now plan to buy my own copy from Amazon so I can go back over it and highlight the methods I didn't quite incorporate the first time around.Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had not already read Morgenstern's book ORGANIZING FROM THE INSIDE OUT, so I did not find the material repetitious. I found it inspiring and very helpful. I would go as far as saying this book has changed my life. Time eating me alive has always been one of my biggest issues. Time now feels like less of a taskmaster and more of a personal tool.I can't wait to see how I feel about time (and my accomplishments) once I've been practicing my new schedule for six months or longer.P.S. I just found out there's a second edition, so I'll probably buy that one to get the updated features.

I was anxious to read Julie Morgenstern's brand new book on time management since I found her "Organizing" book very interesting and useful. This book provides lots of insight into better time management, something we can all use. We've all tried various methods and systems to help us succeed in time management. Some helped, some didn't. It's something I've always had difficulty in dealing with, and although I read various books on the subject, they didn't seem to help very much. Julie's new book really seems to help me balance my time so I can get more things done. She brings to light some of the things that hinder good time management and shows you how to improve on them by using the skills that you already have. Her goal is to help you manage your time better to allow you to do the things you must do, providing you with more time to do what you really want to do. She shows you how to determine how much time tasks really take, avoiding being late, keeping you to your required schedule, and how to cope with things that go wrong. This book offers her expert advice to guide you in establishing a plan or system that works best for you as an individual. It's NOT all work and no pleasure, either. Everyone can benefit by what this book has to offer. It will help you accomplish more in your work life as well as your home life. This will surely become a best seller, as it's a subject EVERYONE must deal with. Well worth reading !!

Very engaging story for an 8 grader.

I read this book because it is my Step-Daughters summer reading requirement for her first year of High School, September 2014. I couldn't put it down. I lived through the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s and this book served as a vivid and powerful reminder that we should never forget to do what is right.

This young adult novel is very interesting to an older adult who lived through the times. Very well written and poignant.

I ordered the hardback book Sources of Light but received a new (damaged during mailing due to flimsy envelop) paperback marked - not for resale - editors copy. I was planning to give this hardback book as a gift. Vendor did provide full refund, but at that point it was too late to get the correct item from Amazon.com. ISBN mix-up was blamed for the incorrect order.

I have used this book for two years with my 7th grade students. This book does not disappoint! Males as well as females love this read. I first read this good as an Advanced Read Copy (Not for sale--before it was published). My students love to pick up on the nuances of the differences and the last minute edits that were made before it was published. What a great opportunity to discuss word choice, editing and publication. As a precursor this book, we read Spies of Mississippi by Rick Bowers. The paired reading is fantastic and a marriage made in heaven. Non-Fiction meets Historical Fiction. My students understand going into Sources of Light the whole Civil Rights Movement in the south and are engaged readers from day 1. McMullan has embedded literary devices on almost every page. I highly recommend you get a class set of this book as well as Spies of Mississippi. While you are at it, look into getting a copy of the DVD "For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska"....we were 20 years ahead of the lower 48 and not yet even a state. There is also a pretty good iPad app to accompany the Spies of Mississippi and a documentary you can purchase from iTunes for $10. I will be using this book for a long time to come as it is not one that can be erased from the shelf.

Your clothes are hand-me-downs from your cousin and make you look odd when you go to school. Your father was killed in Vietnam and you've been told he was a hero. After he dies, you and your mother move from familiar Pittsburgh to Jackson, Mississippi where Mom will teach at a small college. This is our introduction to fourteen year old Sam. She tries to fit in at her new school, but it isn't long before she starts to realize that things in Jackson aren't anything like what she was used to in Pittsburgh. The pervasiveness of racism is something she initially tries to ignore, but not so her mother. When Mom starts dating Perry, another instructor at the college, their shared view of the wrongness of racism, coupled with Perry's encouragement of Sam's interest in photography (he gives her an older camera and teaches her how to develop her own pictures), force her to look at her new town with more mature eyes. Her life gets even more complicated when she starts liking Stone McLemore, older brother of the most popular girl in her freshman class. Stone's father is extremely racist and as the relationship between the two teens progresses, Stone has to look in the mirror more carefully that he might like. At the same time, Sam's mom and Perry are receiving verbal and physical threats because of their actions against racism. The book comes to a shattering climax that's extremely real. This is an excellent example of what historical fiction can be. It's a blend of recent history, family dynamics, young romance and coming of age. While it's been out for a while, I'd still encourage school and public libraries to add it because of its quality and historical accuracy.

Sources of Light by Margaret McMullan is a book that caught my eye at the library a few weeks ago. I was even more excited to see it make the Indie Bound Children's Book List for Summer 2010, giving me some reassurance that this would be a book I would enjoy.Well, not only did I enjoy Sources of Light, but I will be highly recommending it, and it has left me with a little bit of a let down, not knowing how I can find something next that will measure up.Set in 1962, Jackson, Mississippi, Sam and her mother are freshly transplanted there after her father's death in Vietnam. While Sam wants to fit in, her mother, who teaches art at the local college doesn't have any intention of blending in, and garners some attention when she speaks at a black institution. Sam and her mother start to receive threatening phone calls, their mailbox is set on fire, and several other warnings are sent to them to try and reign in their desire to help the civil rights movement. Perry, another professor at the college becomes a friend of theirs (eventually dating Sam's mom), and introduces Sam to photography. With her camera from Perry Sam is able to capture Mississippi at its best - and its worst. This is something that most people in Jackson aren't willing to accept or acknowledge at this point. Perry is also someone who wants to help blacks escape the racism they experience, and while he knows it's danger, he is unable to live his life as a bystander, allowing this to go on.Eventually Sam gives up on trying to fit in with the popular crowd, no longer caring what Mary Alice McLemore wears or what she says. Stone McLemore, Mary Alice's older brother, asks Sam to the school dance, and the two begin a romance impeded by the Klan activities of Stone's father. This book was absolutely perfect. From the bomb shelter that Mary Alice's family constructed to the Tang served at breakfast, to the space race, and mention of Kennedy's worries over Castro, Sources of Light is a flashback of America in 1962. McMullan captures what life in Jackson was like in the 60s and the small ways in which ordinary people helped create change. Perry's talent at photography helped communicate so much about life in Mississippi, showing in black and white how life continued. And this book broke my heart and gave me hope - all at the same time. I rarely re-read, but this is one I would happily read again, giving me a chance to find snippets I had not yet had time to think about and appreciate.

Review

“I love it! Erin Hunter made the best novel I’ve read since Harry Potter! Full of adventures, battling clans, and a classic good vs. evil theme, this is a great book for kids who love fantastical stories or love cats.” (Brightly)“A suspenseful animal adventure. Teen readers will readily identify with Firepaw’s strenuous efforts to fit into the group, applaud his courage to follow his own convictions, and rejoice at the promised sequel.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Action-packed adventure. Certain to please any young reader who has ever wondered what dreams of grandeur may haunt the family cat.” (Publishers Weekly)“The first spine-tingling episode in the planned Warriors series. Sure to appeal to followers of Brian Jacques’ ongoing Redwall series.” (ALA Booklist)“The author has created an intriguing world with an intricate structure and mythology, and an engaging young hero.” (School Library Journal)“The series is patterned in the style of classics by J.R.R. Tolkien or Brian Jacques. It will hook fantasy fans immediately. Read this, and you’ll never look at your plain old tabby the same way again.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)“You sweat during the intense parts and cry during the sad times. You’ll want to read the whole series over and over again.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Erin Hunter is a collective artist. The Warriors series is one of the best series in the history of Children's Literature. This series is for emergent readers of 8 and up. If you are a parent and worry about the content you're children are reading: I applaud you! A lot of books that seem to be written for children are quite graphic. The graphic nature of the Warriors books does not exceed cat fights and cats that might breed with different fathers to their kits. This is actually true to nature and does not go into details of a sexual nature, yet stays in the context of reproduction. the violence is not too graphic for children and I read these books to my young, Christian niece and nephews. The cats have different clans and resemble Native American culture quite closely, which, being half Native myself, I was delighted to discover. This is an incredible series that even adults can enjoy along with their kids or alone.

This book gave a great insight of the path Chris McCandless's troubled life took.I watched the movie "Into The Wild" a few years back and have always been curious and saddened to think about Chris's journey. This book seemed to clear the story a bit. Sometimes I had a lump in my throat thinking that this is not a "character" in a made up story but a real life that seemed to yearn for a peace that only existed in his heart. Jon Krakauer does a great job of giving us a key hole view of "Alex's" life. The good times even when he had nothing. I personally feel like unfortunately Chris was a troubled individual weather it was mental imbalance or emotional disconnect and after this book I feel so sad for his torment. The movie left me disliking his parents, but this book turned that emotion completely around. And I loved the Epilogue. Thank you Jon Krakauer for that. If the movie intrigued you most definitely read the book.

I can't believe I'm sitting here writing a review on a book about cats, but after finishing this six-part series, I felt compelled to share my thoughts, as I couldn't get enough.Erin Hunter has managed to create a compelling world with richly-detailed characters and fleshed out plots that fill every emotion- happiness, sadness, loyalty, diversity, mourning, grief, revenge, and friendship.Despite being children's fiction, the themes and stories have many adult elements for reader's of all ages (I'm a thirty year old guy who unabashedly loves his pets) with a story on the level of Watership Down. You become passionate about the characters and their tribulations, and are heartbroken by the not infrequent deaths from warring clans or nature.I bought this book as light bedtime reading, and quickly purchased the remaining five. I honestly couldn't put it down and if you're looking at this, I'm confident you won't be able to either. Now that it's over, I'm so happy that I've got about 20 other books in the series to read.

I actually didn't know what I was getting when I bought this series. My son told me about it, so I decided to try it. Especially since I am an avid reader! I honestly couldn't stop turning pages! And found myself reading whenever I had a second to spare...and sometimes when I didn't! It's an interesting, fun book, in my opinion. If you love cats, it's a plus. Try the first one, you may find yourself hooked, like I was.

I have to get into an un-biased mindset, or at least try too. I have been reading these books over and over again since middle school so it’s rather obvious that I love and really enjoy this series.I really love the new covers, so much so that I want to buy the books I already have just to get those new covers. However, I also enjoy the classic covers so I’ll be including both.I love having the lists of different cats and the maps, the only thing I have a small problem with is the names being overly repeated. I would say something more about that and the repeating what’s going on but this is pretty much a children’s book.Well, children through early teens but I will also say that this books is for adults. I’m 24 and still really enjoy these books.Even remembering what was going to happen, the authors wrote this in a way to evoke emotion and to create connections quickly. I didn’t want to set this down and when I finished it, I went right on to the next book. For what this story is, I feel like everything that happens is realistic in that world and it’s rather interesting to see the world from a cat’s point of view.I would highly recommend to young and older audiences.

Normally, I like to stick to straight up fiction genres, and I always had this idea that nonfiction also meant non-interesting. However, Jon Krakauer's compelling novel "Into the Wild" quickly reversed that misconception. This is one of the easiest stories, in any genre that I've read, to get involved in, and I never once found myself bored with the book."Into the Wild" is the story of Christopher McCandless and his unique journey into the depths of the Alaskan wilderness. Krakauer makes you really empathize with the troubled young protagonist, and does an excellent job balancing the narrative with his own personal anecdotes. It is abundantly clear that the author is well-versed in both the story and the whole hiking/outdoors culture, and his knowledge helps add to the book. The writing is very direct, but still managed to capture my emotions and keep me engrossed in the story. The story itself would be incredible without all these other elements, but I really felt like Krakauer's talents elevated the book from just an interesting account to a fantastic piece of literature.Even though the book was suggested to me because of my love of hiking, I found that the human element of "Into the Wild" was what kept me reading and enjoying it. Overall, you'd be hard pressed to find a better piece of nonfiction out there.Highly recommended
