Yao Ming comes across in this book as a refreshingly well-balanced young man who has his size 18 shoes squarely on the ground, dispite the fact that his head is almost (literally) in the clouds. Anyone who thinks that Yao has had it easy, will soon discover that he has worked very hard for everything he has and that his 7'6" frame has sometimes been as much a liability as it has been an asset. Yao describes a bit about his growing-up years and shows how his parents, although basketball players themselves, wanted something more for their son. They encouraged him to pursue a college degree, but when he opted for life as a professional athlete, they supported him in his decision. Although very committed to China and to playing for its national team, Yao shows a surprisingly independent spirit and has definite opinions which he shares in the book. Things bog down a bit during the chapters on the negotiations which brought him to the Houston Rockets and the NBA, and the multiple voices which tell the story are rather distracting and confusing at times. Yao is at his best when he uses his humor to contrast life styles between China and the U.S. Although he sometimes pokes fun at both cultures, he manages to show respect to the individuals he writes about. With his work ethic, competitiveness, and balanced outlook on life, Yao is sure to be a success in anything he attempts in life.

The Houston Rockets spent the 2001 season's number one draft pick on Yao, a seven-foot, five-inch center from Shanghai, China. Yao's journey to the NBA has been chronicled in his autobiography, "Yao Ming: A Life In Two Worlds". He has proven to be a marketing goldmine for the profit-driven NBA. Yao appeared in a nationally televised Apple Macintosh Computer commercial (alongside the ubiquitous Verne Troyer, "Mini-Me" from Austin Powers) and being billed alternatively as the "Ming Dynasty" or the "Ming Emperor." Ticket sales and merchandising increase dramatically for Houston, trends that began before Yao had ever played a minute in the NBA. On the court, as well, he has made a huge contribution to his franchise. They often go to great lengths to show support for their hometown heroes. The NBA reaches new heights in the era of radio, television, and Internet exposure. "Yao Ming: A Life In Two Worlds" is a first hand account of the ongoing globalization of the NBA.

I wasn't sure how I felt about paying for a biography for someone who had only been in the NBA for 2 seasons, but I'm so glad that I did. This book is wonderful in the way that Yao lets us catch a glimpse of the giant heart that beats within him. It is very real, very open- and I feel that I understand him so much better now. Definitely worth picking up a copy if you're a Yao fan, or even just want a perspective of China from the eyes of probably the most famous Chinese person of them all!

This book includes many interesting stories and facts that fans will definitely enjoy about the Chinese sports hero. It alludes to Yao's experiences back in China as it shows how he learned to adjust to a life as an NBA All-star. The book is informative and entertaining while it keeps one in constant exclamation over Yao's height, sizes, dreams, and experiences.The physical book itself provides a good read with its medium size and clear print. Yao's stardom also makes the book a worthwhile collector's item.If you are not much of a Yao Ming fan, however, you will probably not enjoy this book. It talks about him almost exclusively, and glimpses into Chinese basketball and cross-cultural struggles are given only from his perspective. Still, if you are collecting athlete biographies, this is not one to overlook.

Sadly, I was one of many children who learned these things early, and Speak made me feel acknowledged. I remember thinking, for the first time, that someone understood me, and I will never, ever let go of the special place that feeling carved out in my heart for this famous little story. When I found out that one of my favorite graphic novel artists was taking it on for a new spin, I had to have it, and I literally sat down to devour it the moment I opened the package.“I wonder how long it would take for anyone to notice if I just stopped talking.”Unfortunately, Laurie Halse Anderson speaks from a place of understanding and experience on this topic, but it shines through in how authentic the events of Speak feel. The story not only discusses the ramifications of rape and how Melinda views her attacker now – especially in a scenario when a victim is forced to continue interacting with their abuser – but it also touches on the depression that can come along with the event, and the ways those feelings manifest themselves for many victims: isolation, silence, anger, self-harm, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and apathy for anything in life that isn’t crucial to survival.“I have never heard a more eloquent silence.”While the story itself is as wonderful and haunting as it always has been, Emily Carroll’s artwork genuinely takes things to a new level. She manages to depict small things that don’t come across as so important in the text – like Melinda’s nervous tics, or the way she views herself as an endangered rabbit when the vicious wolf (her attacker) is near. When it comes to the heaviest and darkest scenes, Emily manages to convey the hurt and fear without going overboard on graphic depictions. There is one panel, in fact, that is so subtle, but left me breathless because it so perfectly portrays the helpless claustrophobia that comes with facing one’s attacker.“It happened. There is no avoiding it, no forgetting. No running away, or flying, or burying, or hiding.”I could tell you, for those of you who haven’t experienced Speak before, that there’s a silver lining, or a lightly humorous subplot to cut through the grime, or a perfectly happy ending, but none of that would be true. Laurie Halse Anderson is too authentic for that. This isn’t a story about a girl who happens to have been raped; this is a book about rape, and the tragic things it can do to a survivor’s psyche. I recommend the utmost caution when proceeding with this story, in its original format or this new graphic novel style, but I also have to say that I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This book changed my life when I read it in its original novel format when I was 17. It was the first book I read about rape and the first on the subject since my own rape years before. It hurt, it destroyed and it healed. I have treasured the book sinceWhen I knew it was being re-released as a graphic novel, I absolutely had to pick it up. It would be only the second time I’ve experienced the story of Speak.It was gut wrenching to get through. Reading the words was painful enough but having the added weight of illustrations to go along with it just made it a completely different kind of vulnerable journey.As hard as it is to read about the subject matter, I will never regret reading Speak in its novel form and I will be forever altered and moved by reading it in it’s graphic novel form.

I read this book for the first time many years ago and have revisited it periodically because of how much it touched me. This graphic novel version of Speak is the absolute best thing that could have happened to this book. It gave it an edgier and darker feeling, without ever feeling too dark. It updates the novel in a great way and makes it accessible to many more readers in a new generation. I can't even express how wonderful this graphic novel is. Please consider purchasing!

This version in graphic novel format is even more an more compelling, haunting, and convincing portrayal of the after effects of date rape. It painfully shows how the inattention of parents and friends feeds into the isolation and downward spiral of Melinda. The artwork draws the reader in to Melinda’s struggle in a stark, relatable way.

I'm so happy to see one of my favorite books given new life with visuals. I know there is a movie, but movies always deviate in some fashion from the book, and I love having the actual words from the novel and images together. I don't super love that some things were updated in the pictures (the book was written in the late 90s, when smartphones and Instagram were nonexistent, and yet they appear in the story), but they don't interfere with the story too too much.

SPEAK is one of the most important books ever written for young adults. It was a first dealing with date rape, years before #MeToo . Laurie Halse Anderson captured Melinda’s quiet vulnerability and burgeoning voice with enough sarcasm to feel authentic, making Melinda’s pain even more poignant.Because of Melinda’s artwork and art as a metaphor, SPEAK transfers seamlessly to a graphic novel. Emily Carroll’s illustrations brought the characters to life. I’ve seen the movie, listened to the audio and read the book countless times, so Carroll’s drawings could have felt “wrong” if she hadn’t imagined the people as Anderson depicted them. Carroll’s Melinda looked different than Kristen Steward in the movie and seemed different than the reader in the audio version, but she **was** just as much Melinda.SPEAK is only the second graphic novel I’ve read, so while I’m not an expert, I can say that I LOVED it. My only complaint was that the formatting on my kindle was a bit tricky. Viewing was landscape, which was fine, but I would have liked to be able to enlarge some of the pages with more ease. Even my aging eyes could read all the words, but I had to strain a bit.

This is very true to the original. And yet the artistry adds so much. I'm glad that new readers of this book have the opportunity to access it another way. Definitely worth the purchase and the read. Adding it to my classroom collection tomorrow.

Not a great YA book. A great BOOK. More people need to read it. It has a lot to say.

Slow burn romance with so much back and forth by the Hero that it almost gave me whiplash. I loved Elle, the heroine. She was the daughter of celebrities who were so self-involved that Elle was frequently forgotten completely, but somehow she still seemed down-to-earth. Elle was really easy to root for because-other than trying to get James to notice her-she didn’t have hidden agendas, what you saw was what you got. James, on the other hand, was at war with himself and was constantly acting one way while feeling another because his family’s expectations conflicted with what he actually wanted. They way Elizabeth O’Roark used both their viewpoints kept me from becoming completely exasperated with James’ indecisiveness since I was better able to understand why he acted the way he did during his chapters, but I still wanted him to “man up” earlier than he did. Finally, I enjoyed the way the secondary characters were fleshed out. There were some characters that I loved and some I couldn’t stand, but most of the secondary characters, including Elle and James’ family members and housemate Max, were very distinct characters whose actions made sense and whose inclusion helped move the story along.

4,5 starsI received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.‘No one but us’ is a bit special because it isn’t a totally ‘new’ book. No, it’s a ‘new’ version of the story ‘Bloom’. The writer decided to rewrite that story. I must confess that I haven’t read the book ‘Bloom’ so I can’t compare the two stories with each other. I can only tell you what I think of ‘No one but us’.‘No one but us’ is a new adult story, a genre that I really enjoy reading. And I must say that I liked this story very much.Elle Grayson can’t remember a time that she wasn’t in love with her best friend’s brother James. As a child he was always there when she needed someone. The last time that she saw him she was 14 years old. Now, 5 years later they will see each other again and will even be spending the summer together in a house. Will James finally see her as more than a friend? Elle really hope so but sadly the situation isn’t as simple as that. Family and the outside world are creating trouble for Elle and James. Is it really worth so much to be together or is it better for everyone to let things go and just be friends?I really liked both characters. James was a good guy who has always been protective of Elle and Elle was a sweet girl. You really felt the attraction between them both but also the guilt, the doubts and the loneliness. I really felt sorry for Elle, this story really shows that it can’t be easy to grow up as an only child of famous parents, parents who are more busy with their own life and success than that they care about their child. I found it special that even after everything she had seen during her childhood, Elle still had that innocent in her. This story really shows how much influence parents can have on their child life.The story is told from both POV’s. I was grateful for that because this way I could understand James feelings better. There was some drama in the story but nothing too much or too dark. For me it had the perfect mix of everything.The one thing that I did miss at the end (but maybe that’s just me) is an epilogue. I would have loved to see how they were doing after a few years together. But I’m really hoping that the writer decides to write a book about James his sister Ginny and his best friend Max and maybe that way we get to see more of Elle and James too?!? I really hope so!‘No one but us’ was a great book and I enjoyed it very much.

This book had a little too much misery and not enough happy for me. I mean, it was well written, but James and Ginny were too mean too her up until the end...

No One But Us follows Ellie- who has had a huge crush on her best friend's brother her whole life,- and James who sees that Ellie isn't just a little girl in braces anymore. When they are roommates for the entire summer things heat up with both of them wanting want they can't have. James can't have Ellie for numerous reasons- one being she's only 19 and he's 25. He used to babysit her- she is still just a kid! Another being she is the center of a secret between her parents that he doesn't even want to know about... Ellie can't have James- he is her best friends brother. He is older, and still views her as just a kid. And he has a girlfriend. But can they both resist what they desperately want- each other? Or will their hearts be broken before the summer comes to an end?This book has major push and pull between these characters. Plus loads of secrets, scandals, and drama in both Ellie and James family. Once I picked up this book I couldn't put it down and I want so much more from these characters and Elizabeth's writting that I will definitely have to pick up more of her books.I loved both Ellie and James characters and even Max (one of the side characters). I felt so bad for Ellie, and everything she has put up with, but loved how the book played out. 4.5⭐ out of 5 ⭐.
