Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools: A Memoir, by Theodore Fontaine

Review

Fontaine has crafted a book that will foster understanding and empathy, as it implicitly asks all readers to examine their own views on this tragic period in our history. --Winnipeg Free Press "Canadians who advise survivors of Native residential schools to "just get over it," should read Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools. . . . If the key to successful communication is showing, not telling, a story, Ted Fontaine succeeds completely in demonstrating from his own experience how damaging the "dark legacy" of residential school can be. His story's upbeat ending also serves as an inspirational example of the lucky minority of survivors who, with help and determination, triumph over that malignant inheritance." --Jim Miller, BC Studies A poignant and powerful story that will help Canadians understand why the residential school system had such a devastating effect . . . ultimately, it is a hopeful and victorious story, as Fontaine found a way through his pain and came to terms with what he saw as "an overwhelming anger" at his parents for abandoning him . . . Broken Circle allows readers to understand that the residential school experience, while damaging to the culture, language, history and beliefs of aboriginal people, is a human story. --Rocky Mountain Outlook This is a story of healing. Fontaine's first-person account balances difficult memories with an affirmation of pride in his aboriginal heritage. It is in turns heartbreaking and touching, but invaluable for the light it sheds on a dark period in Canadian history. --TechLife Magazine -- (01/07/2011)"If you believe, as I do, that knowing our past can help us make positive changes in our future, read this book . . . [Theodore] is doing a remarkable service for First Nations, but also helping non-Aboriginal people see the destructive impact of residential schools." --Rosa Walker, President and CEO, Indigenous Leadership Development Institute, Inc.-- (01/10/2011)"Broken Circle takes readers by the hand and walks us through the lonely corridors of Fort Alexander Indian Residential School. Mr. Fontaine discloses how the trauma he suffered as a result of his incarceration in Canada's Indian residential school system has affected him throughout his life. What I find remarkable about his memoir is the generosity, bravery and open-heartedness with which he shares these sometimes joyous, sometimes painful moments of his life. Ultimately these memories aid him in his personal journey of victory over the enduring legacies of Canada's church-run, government-funded institutions of genocide. In the spirit of reconciliation, Mr. Fontaine brings us to his own healing. And in this way he has added to the healing of us all." --Kevin Loring, author of Where the Blood Mixes-- (01/10/2011)"First and foremost, Broken Circle is a reflection of Ted's courage. It is also a hopeful, inspirational story that will give courage to other residential school survivors. It will show them that they're not alone and that these unique stories are a part of Canadian history that should be told. Above all, Broken Circle is about healing and reconciliation. It makes its point, but there's nothing vindictive about it. Lovely." --Phil Fontaine, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, owner/operator of Ishkonigan Consulting & Mediation-- (01/10/2011)"A commendable and solemn depiction of First Nations life post-1940s and the consequences of residential schools. An important contribution to First Nations literature and history of Indian Residential Schools." --Shawn A-In-Chut Atleo, National Chief, Assembly of First Nations-- (01/10/2011)"Too many survivors of Canada's Indian residential schools live to forget. Theodore Fontaine writes to remember. It's taken a lifetime to make peace with the pain, shame and fear inflicted upon a little boy wrenched from his family when he was only seven. Ted hasn't forgotten, but he has forgiven. This is what makes his voyage of self-discovery so compelling. This memoir is a life lesson about hope, healing and happiness." --Hana Gartner, CBC's The Fifth Estate -- (01/10/2011)"Theodore Fontaine has written a testimony that should be mandatory reading for everyone out there who has ever wondered, 'Why can't Aboriginal people just get over Residential Schools?' Mr. Fontaine's life story is filled with astonishing and brutal chapters, but, through it all, time, healing, crying, writing, friends and family, and love--sweet love--have all graced their way into the man, father, son, brother, husband, and child of wonder Theodore has always deserved to be. What a humbling work to read. I'm grateful he wrote it and had the courage to share it. Mahsi cho. --Richard Van Camp, author of The Moon Of Letting Go -- (01/10/2011)

This is a memoir, and some of what it tells is happy and idyllic. Other parts are sad and just a downright disgrace, yet another blot on both the Canadian and the American past. It's well written and poignant, especially the school memories, which seem to be sharp fragments, all the author can fish out of of his memory concerning the harsh, frightening, and often degrading experiences to which he was subjected. So hard to believe that anyone-could imagine that this policy of removing of the vulnerable young from their families was the "right" or "civilized" thing to do! I'm encouraged that Chief Fontaine was able to share this personal story with the world. That he eventually put the bits and pieces of his self-esteem back together and then went forth in new found strength to work for justice for his tribe is a monument to the intelligence and endurance of 1st Nation's people everywhere.

A powerful and courageous memoir of the hell inflicted upon indigenous peoples and sexual abuse perpetrated by the Catholic Church. A story of survival. I hoe the US can someday find the courage to right the wrongs of our ancestors.

There are not may books that I've read about surviving the boarding school experience. This book was written by a Canadian survivor. I am an Alaskan Eskimo who went to boarding school in Alaska. It answered a few of my own questions why I feel the way I do as an indigenous person. The book was well-written. I will recommend this book to those who have their own struggles coming to grips with their experience away from their families and communities growing up.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has suffered any form of abuse in their life. This has allowed me to begin my journey of healing. Thank you for that Mr. Fontaine.

The reason this book is worthwhile is that it puts its finger on the fact that it is what finances the gross-spending habit of Congress and Presidents. If money were dear -- as it was in most years before 1913 -- our politicians would have to make decisions. The income tax amendment makes it all too legal and easy. It was interesting to understand that the first income tax provided much more income than anyone thought possible. Guess What! The spent it all, and have been doing so ever since. This is what finances all the illegal spending that is not covered by what the Constitution provides under the "spending clause" The "general welfare" that is written into the Constitution means spending for the benefit of all the people, not just some of the people. Canals, catastrophes, humanitarian efforts, et all do not fit the definition of benefiting all the people, they only benefit those directly involved in the results of canal-building, local fires, and so forth. If you think otherwise, read the vetoes written by all the presidents up to the Civil War that vetoed non-conforming legislation that the president held to be contrary to understanding of the general welfare. In particular read Andrew Jackson's veto of the National Bank. No president's veto was ever overridden by Congress. Eventually, the Supreme Court reinterpreted the meaning of the Constitution. This was a political decision, not a legal decision.

If only everyone would read this book. It explains clearly how the 16th amendment happened and how it has enabled the centralized government to control our lives and will inevitably destroy our country. It has allowed the politicians to start and perpetuate the Ponzi scheme called social security, and how all of the other lies that the unfunded 'entitlement" programs can be used to buy votes. The american people have become addicted to the all powerful federal government. This book lays it all out as clearly as it can be done.it is amazing how this author saw this picture so many years ago. Unfortunately, his warning has gone unheeded, and my greatest fear is that it will not be until it is too late to reverse. Our founders designed a constitution that would prevent this from occurring, but people like Lincoln,Wilson and Johnson have destroyed the original intent of those brilliant men who gave us a chance for freedom.

I had never even heard of Frank Chodorov before reading this book, but I am an instant fan. Other big name economists grab all the headlines: Mises, Hayek, Rothbard, etc., but they are not nearly as enjoyable or easy to read. Chodorov writes with the simplicity, permanent relevance, and clarity of Bastiat, and that is the highest compliment I know how to give. Every American should read this to be shaken awake to the growing injustice to which we have become accustomed. Read this, I beg you."Who wants freedom? In the circumstances, those who put a value on freedom, who know that the loss of interest in freedom is the sure mark of national and individual decadence, are in deep despair. Many, too many, have resigned themselves to what they call the inevitable." Frank Chodorov

Chodorov writes then as if it were today. Easy to read and prophetic. This book goes long to show that taxes are not patriotic and how their power increases by the amount we allow our central authority to steal our property. Great book not promoted by those in power because, well, control breeds control. It goes through the history and lies brought by the 16th amendment and the men who promoted it. Super book, not long and easy to understand Chodorov's writing is great. This is a great first book to delve into liberty based writing. Highly recommend.

In 1913 the seed of social cancer was planted in the US Constitution; it took the form of the 16th amendment. It was deceptively approved by our states, due to efforts formulated by the Russian intellectuals influenced by Linen. The 16th amendment allows the federal gov to take private property from individual citizens; this is in direct defiance of the letter and intent of the founding Fathers. The outright astonishing fact is that the federal gov, under this amendment can take all of our property. This makes us slaves. The truth of a thesis is it ability to predict out come. This book was written in 1954, and it describes, in detail, the year 2015. God help us.

I was very pleased about most of the content of this book. It reveals the turning point in American history where we went from a relatively free and open market and society to a centrally controlled, progressive, socialistic economy. My only disappointment was the complete avoidance of discussion of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which in my opinion was the major reason for preparing the way with the Income Tax just months before. Without the Income Tax, the Federal Reserve does not have the guarantees it needs to underwrite US, Federal Government Debt. And, without the ability to monetize it's debt the two parties do not have the liquidity to wage world wars, rebuild countries after the ravages of war, buy alliances worldwide through guaranteed loans, and expand Federal Government programs beyond the current savings/capital of the American people. It's a very clever and well hidden process to most Americans today, and virtually none of them realize the slow and steady process that's been at work for 100 years now to fundamentally "change" our free market system with small government to that of a progressive, socialistic system of control. It all started with the Income Tax and the Federal Reserve in 1912, 1913.All of us are to blame for this disaster. Both major political parties have been the victims of this movement. Neither party today has the understanding of the root of the problem, and without this knowledge the solutions will only treat the symptoms. The result will be catastrophic to our country.

Fabulous little book! Something everyone should read to see the possibilities that could help people if their efforts weren't taken from them. What a help to ALL people with more jobs, purchasing power and freedom.

Review

"The Slate Roof Bible gives a concise history of the slate industry on both sides of the Atlantic, and the types and colours of slates to be found. Although the author is American, he is descended from Welsh migrs who left with the collapse of the Welsh slate industry around the turn of the century, and this is reflected in the early chapters. The later chapters cover in some depth the design, installation, and maintenance of slate roofs. Also covered are tools, safe working practices, and important details on chimneys, flashings and gutters. This is well done, with clear illustrations and photos - an excellent example of how to produce a practical guide. The first book to be written on the subject of slate roofs since 1926. -- The Permaculture Magazine Information Service [England]"The Slate Roof Bible is a fine book, filled with fascinating information about slate: its history, the industry, and the way to work with it properly." "I've been working with slate for a long time; still, I learned from this book some valuable hints and techniques that I've been able to put into practice." -- Fine Homebuilding, July 1998"Five years of meticulous research, thousands of miles traveled to slate quarries all over the world, particularly Wales, has produced The Slate Roof Bible - and a surprise. This book, potentially tedious reading, is instead a delight. Full of history, lore, and useful advice, Jenkins has written a fascinating book, spiced it with humor and warmed it with his own passion for the subject." -- Doylestown Intelligencer Record [Philadelphia]"Jenkins tells his tale with pizazz and rollicking humor, offering anecdote after anecdote about what people do, and do not do, to their slate roofs." -- Boston Sunday Globe

I am a low income home owner that lives in a state where people don't seem to know what slate is. I do all my own work on my home with the help of my husband. Since he doesn't do heights...even a ladder makes him nervous, and I am happy swinging in the trees, I am the "roofer" in the family. I had zero intention of loosing my slate, and no idea how to work with it. This book makes me feel confident that I can. The Youtube videos are an awesome addition, to see how to wield a tool....there is nothing like seeing someone do something to get a good feel for technique. The book is SOOO informative. Don't just skip to the "how-to" for what you need to accomplish. Actually sit and read it cover to cover. It is REALLY helpful to know the nature and history of what you're working with! This book will set you on the path of appreciating the rock and the skill that it takes to get it from mine to roof. I just wish others in my town appreciated what they had on their houses...Even one of the members of the Historic District Commission....ripped all three townhouse roofs off and put asphalt up that still leaks (for tens of thousands of dollars).Packed with witty writing, history and technical information this book will inform you of the beauty of slate, and/or arm you with the knowledge of how to preserve it yourself or ask questions of your contractor. A must if your roof is rock and you intend to keep it that way. I think all homes with a rock roof in this country should come with this book! The pictures are excellent....combined with online video, basic tools and safety equipment, you can do it yourself or be better informed to approach contractors. Even if you're not doing the work yourself, knowing how it should be done, and reading/watching what the experts do will help you not get ripped off.

This book guided me through every step of putting a slate roof on a Japanese teahouse I'm building. Jenkins knows what he's doing and presents the best method in an amateur-friendly way. The Bible is probably a must-have for professional roofers, too.

Wow! This book is everything I've been looking for since I purchased a 110-year-old house with its original slate roof. I soon found out that there was virtually no one with a good working knowledge of slate rooves to be found. We are facing some fairly serious maintenance issues now and when I ran across this book, I hoped for the best. I was right. This has everything you need to work on your own roof or find someone who can, what kind of slate you have, and proper methodologies for putting down as well as repairing slate. It has an amazing breadth, and has beautiful photos of some historical slate rooves, as well as excellent line drawings of repair techniques. This book is for anyone interested in the wonderful slate roof, whether or not you own one. My husband was astonished to find that exactly what he had needed to know was now at his fingertips, with complete instructions. We've had our house for five years now, and finally feel confident about caring for our beautiful old roof.

Nice review of slating over the centuries, as well as a good tool for current slate quarried in the US and elsewhere. I've worked onslate roofs in Virginia for almost 35 years and learned a lot of new information from this well written and nicely presented book.Good pics too.

It's funny how you can drive around your whole life and not notice or appreciate a good roof. I live in Wilson North Carolina, and it is amazing how many beautiful older houses have their original slate roofs (and probably will out-last the house itself?) It is just such a shame that this wonderful material (Slate) is so little understood or cared for? This is THE book for anyone who is fortunate enough to have an intact slate roof. Caring for and repairing one of these historical treasures is either impossible, or horribly expensive, unless you are willing to learn and do the work yourself. The Slate Roof Bible is clearly written by an expert in the art of slate.

The title pretty much says it all. Despite the drawbacks noted by other reviewers I found the information to be comprehensive and informative.

This is a comprehensive book and one of the few books devoted to slate roofs still in print. It tells you everything from installing to the care and repair of the roof. It's true that slate roofs can last 100 years but our roof is 80 years old and is between fair and poor condition. Slate roofing is a specialized art, slate roofing material is difficult to find, and the tools are expensive. It is very difficult to find someone to repair a slate roof, and it needs to be checked/ maintained every year. Despite this, we wanted to repair our roof because it is attractive an possibly less expensive than replacing the entire roof. When I was unable to find someone to repair our roof, I went on line and found Joe Jenkins site. Later I found his book at Amazon. Although the book is complete, it is difficult for a lay person to read though. We were able to tell that the last person to repair our roof didn't know what he was doing (sloppy tar all over). We couldn't find slate to match our roof anywhere. Luckily we discovered some extra under our porch. We bought ladder hooks to convert our ladder to a hook ladder, and this is as far as we got.

Great book. Lots of resources, photos, examples. It helped me develop an even deeper appreciation for my slate roof! Learn about various slate types, slate repair tools, tricks of the trade. Slate is a stone, and what makes a stronger roof than a stone roof?

Good and helpful book for beginners at programming. I've been using this with my son and I think the illustrations and clearly marked steps are helpful. However, I did find a couple errors, so shame on the editor who didn't go through these exercises first. Still, I like the pacing, the material and the overall scope of the text.

Shipped quickly well protected. This item has already helped me to beginning coding. It's really easy to read and follow. I will be up and running my own codes sure enough.

This book was ok. It didn't explain a lot of basics that it needed to about IDLE and its relationship to the terminal. However, it definitely helped to get me started.

Python book by same author is similar. Good information for visual learners.

Teaching my child coding. You need to have prior knowledge of coding to take full advantage. So far I like the layout.

Thanks.

As a serious photographer I was drawn to this book since I was familiar with the controversy surrounding her photographs of her children enjoying life on their Virginia farm in the nude. Critics thought the poses of her young children were too suggestive which I thought was a bit ridiculous since the kids were far ahead of the age of even knowing what that means. At any rate, I was really impressed with the quality of the writing at the beginning, less so as the book moved on. I liked the format of her "fine art" works woven in with shots that come from the family album and thought it was an interesting way to tell her story. But, I know that the photographic industry has worked long and hard to eliminate the less desirable aspects of old time methods and cameras and lenses so when I find someone working with old equipment and techniques like "colloidal suspension" on glass plates and find the resulting work under exposed, low contrast, poorly focused, suffering severe vignetting, etc. and passed off as art, I tend to not be too impressed. But hey, what do I know, she's the one with the McArthur Genius grant! I find her preoccupation with death (evidently inherited from her physician father) a big turnoff and was not impressed with shots of rotting corpses on a body farm even if she did use the old timey artistic techniques to get thrm. It was interesting to read her analysis of these pictures and what she saw in the subject matter but it was not enough to convince me that it was a worthy subject. Aspects of her personal life were certainly different and interesting reading so I think this book will appeal to some, not to others but I think it certainly provides a different perspective on the world and how we develop psychologically. And, just an opinion, but I think the cover photo is the best of the bunch.

This may be the best memoir I have ever read. I've followed Mann's photography for some time, from Immediate Family, through the southern landscapes, the commentaries on slavery, the studies of her husband's failing body, to the Body Farm work. What I didn't know was just how astonishingly eccentric her family actually is. Fully half of this book deals with her family: parents, grandparents, great grandparents, as well as her husband's family. Her family history rivals anything I've ever read before, from spellbinding tales of adverturers to criminals. Among her ancestors she has billionaires (in today's dollars), murderers, polyamourous relationships, drug dealers, inventors, artists, and writers. Branches of her family go back to Colonial America in 1630.She is a deeply Southern woman, bound to the land she comes from, yet conflicted by Confederate history. She writes that, like many affluent Southern children, she was essentially raised by a Black woman, who worked for her family for 50 years. In this book she tries to come to terms with the Southern mentality and the legacy of slavery, as well as her own parents' indifference towards child rearing.Recounting the bizarre stories would take me as long as it took to read the book. There are remarkable anecdotes on virtually every page of it, some of it almost unbelievable. Manhandling a dead body to the top of a hill to its repose at the Body Farm comes to mind, as does the recounting of her in-laws descent from high social standing to drug dealing and, finally, murder/suicide. Her own father's lifelong obsession with death, culminating in his suicide, seems to be a harbinger of Mann's own preoccupation with death and dead bodies. Her mother's lifelong distance and aloofness was offset by her relationship with the Black housekeeper.Sally Mann is one of the most interesting and creative personalities of the last century, in my opinion, stubbornly carrying out whatever odd and difficult project she conceives of. Her view of herself and her life is fierce, honest, and uncompromising. She never flinches from showing herself as she is, and never hides her failures and insecurities from us.This is more than a memoir of a photographer. In many ways, it is the story of the South. I've never understood this part of the Country until seeing inside of her mind through her memories, which she rigorously confirmed with her family, friends, and various documents she researched. It wasn't enough that she "remembered". She made sure that what she remembered was what really happened.Oddly enough, for an artist who has been called the preeminent photographer of her generation, her undergraduate and Masters degrees are in creative writing. Her book is brilliantly written. There is not a single dry sentence in it. Reading this book was one of the highlights of my reading year, and it will surely be one of yours.

I just finished the third reading of Sally Mann's "Hold Still." Three readings are usually sufficient for some disillusionment to arise, for imperfections to raise their hands, but this was not the case. This book is not a simple autobiography or, as it mentions in the cover, "A memoir with Photographs"; This book is one more piece in the immense work of Sally Mann and, as such, has constructed it with its accustomed meticulousness and honesty.Sally tells us her life, with details, but the purpose is no other than that we understand that every fact, every meeting, every look is building the floor on which we founded our work, which we decide to be or that we Is inevitable. The story of his Gee-Gee babysitter, the embarrassment of his in-laws, the mystery of his father, the "great" Larry Mann and his farm, his territory, that "Not only is abundant, with the kind of obvious beauty, Every day, that even a baby can appreciate, but also features the world-class drama of Virginia "; Everything is relevant, but not because it accumulates in his DNA, as a journalist insidiously insisted in a recent interview, but because Sally's gaze makes it relevant, analyzes, scrutinizes, integrates.Reading the book generates the same feeling of hearing her speak, especially in the documentary "What remains", we recognize the lucid artist, who selects with wisdom and quickly discards. But what the book can show us, and which largely escapes orality, is the critical ability that Sally has, culturally critical, and the clarity of concepts. Not many artists have, like her, the ability to articulate their concepts in clear language. The book touches fundamental themes of our human condition, such as death, love, beauty and racism. In the latter, racism reaches the bone when it tells us in a chapter on his project of portraying black men: "Exploitation lies at the root of every great portrait, and we all know it."Not a single direct advice, no shortcut list, what Sally offers us in this book is nothing more nor less than a confession, I insist, a work, in which we can see ourselves reflected or not, that can make us think, tremble, as in The chapter in which he describes how he took photographs at the University of Tennessee Anthropology Research Center; Known as the Body Farm, a program that studies how human bodies, in the open air, decompose. "One thing about the helpless dead hit me right away: the need to fix them, to join their drooping lips, to close their prying legs, to cleanse the eyes of liquefaction."Beyond the awareness that we are willing to produce art, or even to be able to do it, Sally urges us to pay attention to the evidence of existence that we leave in our lives and how that evidence shapes us, that's where we must look again , and again; There is our life and, if we want, there will be our art.
