Finally a book (two books) for the sole practitioner architect with relevant and usable information. I am working my way through both books a second time with a highlighter and taking lots of notes in a separate notebook. I have already used the book to push me over the edge in terms of changes to my business. I have had the foundations laid for a while now but lacked some basic and simple information to get going. One could get this information elsewhere in time consuming bits and pieces but Eric provides what I need here in one place and in a clear format. The first book is more inspirational (I've been a sole practitioner for 16 years already) and the second book has tons of very practical information but should be purchased and read together.

I am currently an Intern Architect who would like to have my own business one day. As an intern, I do not usually get exposed to the business side of running an architecture firm and appreciate that this book helps lay out the process and considerations of starting your own practice. It also has sparked ideas as to how I can start my own business while still employed at my current firm. I still have a lot to learn and I am not yet an architect, but I know I do not wish to work for someone else for the rest of my life. This book helps the brainstorming process of how I can apply my architecture skills to a business, how I can be relevant for potential clients. It also helps confirm what I had been contemplating before, selling services and sets online, but had dismissed because of how specific architecture can be and the liability associated with our profession. I have really enjoyed this book and I have purchased and am half-way through Volume 2. I would recommend this book if you are in the AEC industries and want to branch out on your own. If anything, it will help you see possibilities if you did not before and will help give you general steps to get yourself started. But you have to take action for this book to really help.

This book was just phenomenal. There is so much covered that I would have not even thought of. There are different companies, websites, etc. that he endorses throughout the book. At first, I was thinking, "Hmm, I wonder how much these companies are paying this guy!" However, after questioning and doing a lot of my own research, his recommendations of how to go about things and what services to use really gives you the most bang-for-your buck and he has truly done all the research for you. This book is very thorough and well written, and above all else- it saved me SO much time and from having to do SO much research. It's like having a mentor to take you step-by-step and get you going. I recommend not really getting started until you read the book front to back, and then start following his steps- going back and reading it again. There is a lot to absorb, and all of it is important. The book is about $20 bucks but if you follow Eric's advice, it can save your business at least $2,000 in time, effort, finding the best deals for your needs, and avoiding missteps. I will also be buying his starter package that his company provides online. Another huge time and effort saver.

Eric details the business side of architecture, a topic most people don't want to delve into. As someone who is about to graduate with his masters and has been heavily exposed to only design, I became immediately enthralled with this book. The book discusses things such as business structures, taxes, marketing, client interviews and compensation. A very interesting read for anyone wanting to start their own design practice. The credibility comes from the writer's own experience that are discussed in the book.

This book is the greatest step by step tool I had ever found! Eric, you are trully a successful man.I had been reading and implementing changes to my business based in the instructions and I will tell you - this makes so much sense! The book is flowing through the subject of creating the business model the right way.My favorite part was new client package and marketing section.Thank you Eric for spending time on educating us!

Eric Reinholdt’s lays out the reality of what it means to be an architect entrepreneur. A lot architecture firms are small or one man shops, and because of their size it is hard to learn from this group personally. Eric brings you into his world to show your world you can create for yourself. My one suggestion would be to start with chapter ten first. The first line reads beautifully: “The day I opened my business was the day I realized, for the first time in my life I was building my dreams, not someone else’s.” Then move to chapter eleven before going back to chapter one. In this book you will find insights on how to grow revenue through productization. You will learn how to create your brand and start marketing. But most importantly you’ll find someone like you showing you the way to create your own future.

This book is on the forefront of a pivotal shift that is inevitably coming in the architectural profession. The role of an architect needs to embrace the entrepreneurship mindset and look for new ways to generate income. Eric brilliantly outlines principles to merge entrepreneurship and design, and as the subtitle suggests, guides you in setting up your own design firm, and all of the pieces that need to be in place to do so.Eric covers topics like business structure, taxes, contracts, marketing, finances, getting commissions, and even the types of software and equipment you will need to start your firm. If you plan on going into the architecture field at all or starting your own firm you need to read this book. You can't afford not to.

In my anatomy class my teacher said i HAD to read this book. But don't read if someone you know has recently passed or if this kinda stuff bothers you. Take it lightly and humorous.

Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers is an example of a morbid topic turned into a page turning and ironically uplifting read. Stiff is very informative on the history and uses of cadavers while also providing entertainment through Roach’s unique style of writing. Additionally, the book contains numerous gory stories about blood and death, but the real meat of the book is in Roach’s main point of the history and uses of cadavers. She uses real examples of scientists and researchers performing horrific operations on human remains in order to learn the anatomy of our complex species. The chapters are deliberate and in depth and they address a wide range of topics from impact studies for car safety to human composting as a new means of disposal. Roach is additionally accommodating enough to include informative footnotes in places where the subject deviates from common knowledge. One of the best things about this book, besides just the mere content, is the witty style in which Roach employs. She seamlessly integrates jokes and humor into her writing of dead people without being the least bit disrespectful, in my opinion. To make its case, Stiff appeals to both medical interests in the surgeries described and to historical ones in its ample amount of sources on how humans first discovered how our anatomy was designed. The prominence of death in the book however does not lower its accomplishments by any means. If anything, death and dying opens up a new conversation of what to do after we die. The only piece of cautionary advice I have is that certain parts are a bit too bloody and gory, which may lead to sensitive readers not being able to read every page. To oversimplify, Stiff is one of a kind and can be thoroughly enjoyed no matter what medical expertise one has. While prior knowing of the book’s anatomy knowledge is useful in understanding the kind of value it has, it can be advantageous for a multitude of audiences.

Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that: what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more. It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates. But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the body when it dies? Or how cadavers donated to science are used? Have you ever wondered if embalming keeps your body from ever decaying? These are just a few of the questions covered in this book.I absolutely love Mary Roach’s writing style! She’s hilarious without being disrespectful, and I can’t imagine anyone being able to write about this subject as well as she does. She keeps the reader engaged and asks the questions we are all curious about. . .well at least the questions I was curious about. This was a fascinating and at times a disturbing read. If you get nauseous easy this may not be the book for you. This may also not be the book for you if you are an animal lover. There are several sections that discuss experiments on animals – the same or similar experiments that are being done on cadavers – that was very difficult for me to read.

I read The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot when I was about 17 years old. I remember the experience because I almost literally could not put the book down. I read for 14 hours straight until I finished the book. I even remember cooking pork chops with one hand while holding the book in the other hand so that I could read while I cooked. I cannot tell you now what the book was about (that was almost 40 years ago), just that I loved it and devoured it, along with the pork chops:-). After reading Middlemarch, I plan to reread The Mill on the Floss and read all her other novels as well.I loved Middlemarch, but I didn’t devour it. I chewed it slowly - the writing too beautiful to swallow whole. It grabbed me right from the start and I knew I was in for a sublime reading experience. In many of the reviews I have read people have mentioned that Eliot’s narrative voice was not to their liking, finding it too didactic or distracting. I found her narrative to be one of the things I liked best. It was through this technique that most of the wisdom and life lessons were imparted. The narrative became another character for me, seamlessly blended with the rest of the characters.“We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, "Oh, nothing!" Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts--not to hurt others."Her ability to sum up a character in one beautifully written paragraph is remarkable. In describing Mr. Casaubon, one of the main characters, Eliot writes. “It is an uneasy lot at best, to be what we call highly taught and yet not to enjoy: to be present at this great spectacle of life and never to be liberated from a small hungry shivering self-- never to be fully possessed by the glory we behold, never to have our consciousness rapturously transformed into the vividness of a thought, the ardor of a passion, the energy of an action, but always to be scholarly and uninspired, ambitious and timid, scrupulous and dim-sighted.”In talking about another character, Dr. Lydgate, she says. “Only those who know the supremacy of the intellectual life-- the life which has a seed of ennobling thought and purpose within it-- can understand the grief of one who falls from that serene activity into the absorbing soul- wasting struggle with worldly annoyances.”Her dry wit and humor are scattered throughout the book like sparkling gems.“Miserliness is a capital quality to run in families; it's the safe side for madness to dip on”."He has got no good red blood in his body," said Sir James. "No. Somebody put a drop under a magnifying-glass and it was all semicolons and parentheses," said Mrs. Cadwallader."Oh, tallish, dark, clever--talks well--rather a prig, I think." "I never can make out what you mean by a prig," said Rosamond. "A fellow who wants to show that he has opinions." "Why, my dear, doctors must have opinions," said Mrs. Vincy. "What are they there for else?" "Yes, mother, the opinions they are paid for. But a prig is a fellow who is always making you a present of his opinions."“But Duty has a trick of behaving unexpectedly--something like a heavy friend whom we have amiably asked to visit us, and who breaks his leg within our gates.”Eliot is sympathetic to her characters, showing the good and bad in all, even the characters who would be despised if written by most authors. There is no black and white here, and yet the story is still compelling without the devise of writing purely lovable or despicable characters. We are shown what motivates the most hateful figures as well as those we are drawn to, and as a result there is no one in this book with whom you cannot empathize in some way. Her writing is infused with penetrating insights into human nature without ever losing compassion and understanding for their frailties. This empathy for her characters, perhaps more than anything else, differentiates her writing from Dickens and Austen.I now look forward to reading all her other novels, starting with her first one, Adam Bede. It should be interesting to see her progression from first novel to last. I had very few preconceived notions about Middlemarch before I read it and maybe that helped me to enjoy it all the more, but enjoy it I certainly did!

January 16, my birthday, I started Middlemarch by George Eliot (1871), a book I have wanted to read for fifty years. I finished it today, July 3.Set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829–32, and widely considered the greatest of Victorian novels, this mighty workhas often been compared to Tolstoy's War and Peace due to it's immense cast, and it's historical precision. Additionally, however, it reminds me of Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady (1880) due to it's depth of psychological analysis of human nature in all its rhythms and shades. Some have called Middlemarch a novel without a hero, but in the end it is the town of Middlemarch itself, with all its dizzying array of foibles and follies, loves and slanders, gossip and redemption, tragedy and laughter, wealth and poverty, that fills the role. The author never ridicules, never mocks, but simply loves her people, every one, and after spending six months with them I will miss every one, even the monsters, but especially the disappointed.Halfway through I discovered that Edward VII (1841-1910), Queen Victoria's eldest son, read Middlemarch annually from it's publication until his death, thirty-six years later. I can see why. Spanning eight books, and nearly a thousand ages, the author never falters.A sample:“Men outlive their love, but they don’t outlive the consequences of their recklessness."Every limit is a beginning as well as an ending. Who can quit young lives after being long in company with them, and not desire to know what befell them in their after-years? For the fragment of a life, however typical, is not the sample of an even web: promises may not be kept, and an ardent outset may be followed by declension; latent powers may find their long-waited opportunity; a past error may urge a grand retrieval. Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic--the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common. Some set out, like Crusaders of old, with a glorious equipment of hope and enthusiasm and get broken by the way, wanting patience with each other and the world."And, finally, the last and most famous line in the book, “...for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on un-historic acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in un-visited tombs.”

To give a masterpiece of world literature, which is what Middlemarch is, only five stars is to fail to acknowledge its greatness. Yes, it's a bit slow in the beginning; yes, it's long and written in a leisurely pace; yes, it's written in the English style of the 19th century, which is a far cry from modern prose. But in depth and precision of characterization, in its ability to penetrate to the core of human experience, and in its creation of a picture of an entire wold, there are few, if any books, that can match it. It is, indeed--as Virginia Wolf said--a novel for adults. Many others have pointed out the particular beauties and wisdom of the novel better than I can, so let me point out a particular feature that Amazon offers that I have used. If you buy the Kindle version of this Oxford edition of Middlemarch you can, for an extra few dollars, also get the Audible version read by Juliet Stevenson. (The Audible version on its own is $55.) Also, the two versions sync together, so you can read a few chapters, and then switch over on your IPad or iPhone to Stevenson's reading, and then switch back whenever you wish. Stevenson's reading is legendary for a reason: she brings the book alive in a very powerful way, and is marvelous at communicating its meanings. I learned a lot from listening to her--especially in revealing the humor in the book, which I missed in my own reading. But I also wanted to read on my own as well. Amazon had made this now possible at a very reasonable price, and I heartily recommend it.

Health Humanities Reader

Review

"This is a landmark volume that sets the standard for any future collection in medical/health humanities. It is by turns authoritative, funny, edgy, creative and personal—sometimes all in one piece.” (Thomas R. Cole Director, McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, University of Texas-Houston Medical School)"It's about time! The field of medical humanities has been waiting for a reader, and this one is it. With an excellent array of essays in appropriate topics by top people in the field, this book should set the standard for the next ten years. It will prove fascinating to undergraduates, graduate students in both the humanities and the health sciences, and to the general public and particularly those who are or will be patients—which of course is everyone." (Lennard J. Davis editor of The Disability Studies Reader)"This bold, intelligent, and vitally comprehensive collection is a truly interdisciplinary achievement and an indispensible resource.Through twelve judiciously selected thematic clusters, Rutgers’s Health Humanities Reader consolidates this new subfield by capturing both the complexity and excitement of health humanities scholarship.  An essential tool with practical applications both inside and outside the classroom." (Andrea Charise, PhD assistant professor of health studies, University of Toronto, Scarborough)"[This book] consists of nearly 50 chapters, some of which deal with classic medical humanities topics, such as the notions of health and disease and the theory of the body. The majority of the book centers on more contemporary—some would say postmodern—issues, such as gender and sexuality, disability, and aging. Recommended." (Choice)

Very well written and easy to follow. I bought this for my Medical Humanities class. It is actually very easy to follow along and I like how they author uses stories of their own or from other people. He explores many topics I did not think to consider until reading it. If you are curious about humanities in the health field and how to really understand people with different disabilities, this is really a good book to look into. I also like that he sections out the chapters so that maybe 3-5 chapters are in one section and they all have one idea in common.

The essays in this collection purport to set out a vision of the Health Humanities as an interdisciplinary field and also to provide an overview of key concepts, such as race, disability, death and dying, the body, and aging. I was disappointed that each section includes a set of articles on the key concept, but does not provide a general overview of that topic for newcomers to the field. I assigned this book in a graduate class hoping that students would gain a basic sense of key theorists, terms, and definitions for each topic. The book reads instead as more of a typical edited collection, so it was not useful for the purpose I imagined. I also hoped for more authors written by interdisciplinary teams of researchers, and more articles that explicitly described or modeled research methods and studies.

This bood is a fairly good intro to the Japanese tea ceremony for the absolute neophyte. Covering history, gardening and a very basic overview of the utensils and ceremony. For anyone wishing to know more about the actual procedures of the ceremony, the book falls short (however, I'm not aware of any books widely available that do a good job of explaining these procedures). As tea ceremony is best learned under the tutalage of an instructor, anyone more serious about tea would do best to seek out a teacher.

A few years back I participated in a tea ceremony in Japan as a tourist with little idea of what was going on besides that it was cool and elegant. Reading this book filled in for me what I missed -- and it was a lot. This is a wonderful introduction to that most Japanese of ceremonies.

The book was delivered in terrific condition. It was sent on time. The Tea Ceremony provides a terrific explanation of how a tea ceremony is performed and the utensils used.

While the schools of tea differ, and this school/ryugi differs in details from the principal schools, it gives a good outline of history and practice. Excellent in photography, diagrams and production.

Readers enter this book as if a guest at a tea ceremony itself. The experience begins with admiring the cover, the letters almost an abstract composition on the subtly pale gold, the figure of a kneeling lady in a kimono shaded like a cherry petal, left hand supporting the celedon incense cup, right covering it, gazing down. We are invited to enjoy this quiet beauty, then turn to the opening pages. On the left page, an extraordinarily skillful photograph showing textures & shadings: a single pink hibiscus, with yellow stamens arising from the cup, against the green star-galaxy of a moss garden, the lichened tree trunk aligned with the blossom, the blossom placed at the verge of moss and brown forest floor. Pause: feel the coolness, hear the faint sound of water, of leaves barely moving."The Tea Ceremony," published in 1977 by Harmony Books, can be in itself an exemplar of the art, values, and aesthetic of this ceremony. Like a No play, the ceremony has ancient roots. It intentionally moves slowly, permitting fullest admiration of each exquisite presentation in what Edwin Reischauer in his Foreword calls a different space and time.Reischauer's Foreword, three wise pages on what a Westerner might experience and needs to be diffident about, is followed by Yasushi Inoue's three page preface bringing us closer to the significance of the ceremony in Japanese culture, and by author Sen'o Tanaka's two page poem-prose on the integration of Takeshi Nishikawa's photographs and the text."I always," Tanaka writes, "feel a joyous beating in my heart on seeing the greenness of the moss glistening in the rain, and I feel as though my heart and soul have been washed clean, like the moss."The eight chapters of this art-size book include--Cha-No-Yu (about the tea ceremony)--Early History of Tea--Tea Masters and Tea Styles--Aesthetics of Tea--Temae (correct or proper procedures)--Performance of the Tea Ceremony--Tea Architecture and Tea GardensThere are an admirable section of notes to the beautiful plates, a Guide to classic Tea Houses, an excellent glossary, a Chronological Chart, a fascinating section on the Plan of Tea Rooms, and an Index, 215 pages in all. The details required for a perfect performance as host and guest seem innumerable, yet are but different paths to purification and tranquility shared with friends.I read this before travelling in Japan to help gain insight on the aesthetic values of Japan that might be a hidden river nourishing the more contemporary worlds of skyscrapers and bullet trains. The book proved to be in itself a door to a world of living in the now, of appreciating each element including the fragrance of the tea, the harmony between the seasons and every aspect of the ceremony, that was wondrous even without Japan travel ahead. But it also helped greatly in appreciating what I was seeing in the monasteries, palaces, and the austere beauty of a tea room. This is not an inexpensive book but it is, for the quality and wisdom, almost an invaluable one. The copy being reviewed is paperback and although much read, is in excellent condition, attention having been paid to layout, paper quality, and binding.READER ALERTS? This book is almost 40 years old. Much seemed unchanged in the great gardens and legendary tea houses to which admission must be sought months ahead. Yet time moves on; values change; there may be new Tea Masters, new approaches. More recent books on the tea ceremony would be helpful reading. Also, as another reviewer has pointed out, even a book as mindful & beautiful as "The Tea Ceremony" is an introduction for those new to the tradition, and readers may carry their knowledge humbly...grateful however that this book exists and opens the garden gate for us.OVERALL: Enthusiastically recommended and enjoyable indeed with a cup of fine tea.

Very interesting intro on Japanese tea ceremony. Love it!

I've read a lot of devotionals, but none has impacted my life like this one, it's amazing! It gives you a bible verse, an encouraging story, and then a short prayer to take you through the day. takes less than 5 minutes to read every morning, and it's user friendly for everyone, whether you're just beginning a relationship with God or whether you've had it all your life. very easy read, concise and to the point. Covers a variety of topics from confidence, faith, love and gives you a great start to your day. Written from a first person perspective, and based on Scripture, Joyce Meyer will guide you and encourage you to start every day with scripture, a prayer and an open heart to God.

Absolutely love this devotional - well written, easy to understand, and every day is relevant. However, I am a full time professional, wife, and mother. The book almost assumes that all women are at least mothers/wives, so I would have been very disappointed if I were single or without kiddos, as the book would not be nearly as relevant. Otherwise, wonderful!

I think this is going to be a great devotional series. Im only a couple days into it. I kind of wish they were a little longer but it is great for someone who doesnt take a lot of time for their devotions. Good message for each day that you have no excuse with time to not do it. Excited for the next 363 days of it.

This book is so inspiring. I can't tell you how many times I open it and look at the date and it speaks to me. It is like sometimes God reaches out to you when you need him. Joyce Meyer is amazing and I look forward to reading more of her work. I bought it a time in need. I have been struggling not only with my faith but with my self esteem and confidence. She really knows how to reach women and boost us to feel confident and the love of God. It is also short so you aren't reading for 30 minutes. Very good short and right to the heart of the passage.

I read this nightly as a way to calm down and prepare myself for the next day. It does have bible passages, so be aware that there is a heavy religious component to it, but it's great if you are religious. Each page is dated, ex: "January 1," but without the year, so it can be read over and over again. The book is also an excellent gift.

Joyce Meyer writes beautiful meditations. I like her Trusting God book better than this one. These are very good but her focus becomes too much on self will for me. Just my take.

Currently reading the book (daily devotional). Fantastic so far. I have a tendencies to always feeling a little apprehensive. But God is working on me with this devotion. I have to remind myself every day, that " I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." And that fear is a liar, a illusion, a tactic the enemy uses to derail us from reaching our optimal protection. Since I have learn the truth that is in Christ, I dont depend on those negative thought anymore.

I read a portion of the Confident Woman as a devotional on the Bible app and loved it so I decided to buy it. I am happy with my purchase!

Review

WINNER OF THE STEPHEN LEACOCK MEDAL FOR HUMOURWINNER OF CBC CANADA READS“Amusing, enlightening--and Canadian, and it deftly explores the Machiavellian machinations of Ottawa’s political culture.” The Globe and Mail “This is a funny book that could only have been written by someone with firsthand knowledge of politics in Canada, including its occasionally absurd side. This is a great read for anyone thinking of running for office, and especially reassuring for those who have decided not to.”  The Hon. After being introduced to this author's work by a staffperson at Munro Books in Victoria, BC last summer, Terry Fallis has become my favorite Canadian comedic author, and this book tops the charts. The humor and twists of this comic political novel are a great antidote to the bleating, braying and soul-sucking hideousness we are seeing on the national stage in the USA right now. I liked it so much I sent it to ten friends for Christmas this year, all of whom, like me, need a political lift and something to laugh about that all liberals can relate to. I liked it so much that I've read the rest of his books too. Go Terry Fallis! This book saved my sanity at a really lousy time.

These two books (Including the High Road) are hilarious ( and satirical). The author takes on a two volume story of how an eloquent, articulate, inelegant engineering professor finds himself an unlikely MP candidate in a riding that he has no chance of winning. His co star in this drama is a, jaundiced for his years, political speech writing Ph.D. in English. In the style of Jonathan Swift the author carves just north of a ludicrous path through the corridors of almost power in the House of Commons. His insights cut very close to exposing the bone of seedy and parochial displays in the House and how ideals could fall to the pursuit of re-election. The present CBC comedy series on The Best Laid Plans adheres somewhat to the book , but does sway into a bit more melodrama than that book. In my mind the book is quite good enough without a TV producer "juicing" it up.

It is rare that one finds laugh-out-loud reading material that is also enlightening, but to this U.S. native Fallis's satire on the Canadian parliament was both. I cared about the characters, cheered for the idealistic and accidental representative Angus, and learned a fair amount about parliament to boot.I'm going to write a thank you note to my Canadian friends who recommended this book.

Terry Fallis is a great Canadian storyteller. The "Best Laid Plans" and the follow up "The High Road" though fictional, give an entertaining, tongue in cheek look at the inside machinery of the Canadian Federal Parliament.

I'm so glad to read an award winning Canadian book that isn't pedantic or depressing. It's time for light and entertaining novels to win some hefty Canadian awards. And Fallis deserves the award. He kept me entertained from page 1 until the very end. I'm not a political animal, I've never understood that species, but if politicians were as entertaining and creative as Daniel, Angus, Muriel and the rest of the characters, I'd sign up with the Liberals tomorrow. I've read some of the reviews that complain the plot is not realistic. Time to look up the definition of 'fiction'. Kudos to you, Fallis. I hope I can follow in your footsteps. I too am a Canadian author who is self published. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a funny story from the point of a weak-stomached parliamentary operative who tries to chuck it all away and seek refuge and rest in academia after his unfaithful ex-girlfriend's affair with a politician. He manages to end up convincing then working for an honest man to run for Parliament. A dash of occasional 3-year-old humour, and some more sophisticated political humour, it's a great read!

In case you didn't know Best Laid Plans is the winner of the 2011 CBC Canada Reads contest. It was described as the "most essential Canadian novel of the decade."It's not though. If you allow the book to stand on its own merits - without hype or celebrity promotion - it fairs quite well. Best Laid Plans is funny, unique, and an enjoyable read. In the opening chapter you'll find this gem of a sentence: "Let's just say she was rather enthusiastically lobbying his caucus." Yeah, Terry Fallis went there.I'm kind of glad Terry did too. Living close to America, some Canadians believe our politics to be boring in comparison to the antics of the Tea Party or the inspiration of Barrack Obama. It's not true. We have just as much quirkiness, just as much sliminess, and more then enough "huh?" moments. Most of it just goes unnoticed. The novel takes place in the Ottawa area and centre's around a Liberal party political aide. In an effort to escape the party gives him one last assignment - to find a candidate for a riding that never votes Liberal. A few whips and chains later (!) the chosen candidate ends up being elected to office and we follow a rookie MP who just doesn't care about being re-elected or pleasing the party leader. For many this book could be an introduction to Canadian politics. I wish there were more books like Best Laid Plans out there. But it's not grand or moving on the scale of "essential Canadian novel of the decade." It's just an entertaining and average read. Reading this will not change politics in the country as some claim.Terry's main character, the political aide, is unfailingly whiny. He whines about leaving politics, he whines about a new relationship, he whines about politics, he whines about falling into dog poop... you the idea. The idea of one rookie MP changing politics is laughable as well. The perfection portrayed by MP Angus McLyntock is unrealistic, contrived, and equally as annoying. Its good that the books is about 350 pages because if it were any longer I would have said, "enough."Indeed the only character flaw of the rookie MP is that he farts loudly. On that previous sentence, which aptly sums up Best Laid Plans, I end this review.Rating (gouge my eyes out, below average, average, above average, more please)AverageEnjoyed: Funny, an easy and quick read, rare Canadian fiction about Canadian politicsDisliked: Main character is whiny, unbelievable

A light and funny tale about the unpredictability of Canadian federal politics, this story is a quick read and is engaging. I particularly enjoyed it because like the main character, I too have worked on Parliament Hill for members of Parliament and have managed election campaigns. Although the story is a bit far fetched, on most of the details about life on the Hill, Fallis is accurate. It's clear he's both worked there and has done extensive research. He paints a truer picture than many political science texts, but with an enjoyable, amusing story.
