This is an excellent intermediary book for the blossoming horologist. It covers both clocks and watches in rather specific details. However, many of the terms used and items referenced will not be known to the novice. It also has the book structured such that the basics of horology are not introduced until later in the book. If you have an earnest desire to learn about horology I wouldn't dissuade you from reading this book. Just know there are better choices for someone who wants to dip their toes in the shallow end, as it were.

Worth the money. I learned a lot of how mechanical watches worked. It's a great book for beginners I'm glade I bought it.C.Culpepper

While everything in the book is correct, It doesn't teach you anything. It starts off as if you know the names of all the parts of a watch, but I don't, that's one of the reasons I bought the book. I guess it's my own fault, believing the hype.

I bought this book after I got lost reading Practical Watch Repairing. This book really is good for beginners. While you can get lost in the technical explanations, the book really does approach repair from a beginner's level. Hell, the book starts with a history of time keeping...starting with the rotation and orbit of the earth. So this book really does start from the beginning.I like this book also because it has a LOT of well drawn diagrams with lots of descriptions. You can know the main parts of a watch by looking at two diagrams and have it memorized in twenty minutes. With the help of memorizing those diagrams and understanding them, I have actually successfully theorized and did a couple of easy/simple fixes on eBay purchases that weren't running based on the item descriptions!The book has large print which is nice and everything is explained in a easily comprehensible fashion. The Practical Watch Repairing book was definitely more difficult to comprehend.Get this book, it's a good one.

I wouldn't recommend this for beginners. I gave it three stars because while the book is well written and informative, a book entitled "watch repair for beginners" should mostly be about watches and basic information.

This 145 page book is about a complex subject -- the universe and our place in it. It is lucid, rational, and persuasively written; a small book on a vast subject which is best enjoyed by the reader personally. In brief, Alan Lightman tells us that the current scientific view which he, as a scientist, is inclined to agree, is that our universe is the result of a random coincidence of forces and events (his first chapter explains this). He also says that current scientific opinion inclines towards the existence of not just our universe but many others. Some may similarly have randomly created conditions that lead to life. However, he accepts that these are based on scientific theories and calculations that are rational, and irrefutable for the time being, there is no way we can prove that there is life anywhere else.Lightman is a self-confessed atheist although reading his thoughts in this book, one might be forgiven for thinking him to be a Buddhist. He certainly does not believe in the existence of any gods, and he does not believe in any life after death. He believes that we, like every living thing, grows in the time available to us in the space we are in, and gradually, we wither and are gone - like everything else that once lived but are now dead - the one billion people who were alive in the year 1800, for example.Lightman agrees with the views of Richard Dawkins so far as biology, evolution and atheism are concerned. But he dislikes Dawkins' attitude. Lightman is amenable to people who wish to believe in a personal god or gods. He believes that the scientific people (not science) can live with religious people (not religion). He clearly does not think that science and religion are compatible, but scientists and religious people can be.It seems, therefore, such a brilliant piece of work will probably attract criticism from Dawkins and extremist religious people.

"Faith, in its broadest sense, is about far more than belief in the existence of God or the disregard of scientific evidence. Faith is the willingness to give ourselves over, at times, to things we do not fully understand. Faith is the belief in things larger than ourselves. Faith is the ability to honor stillness at some moments and at others to ride the passion and exuberance that is the artistic impulse, the flight of the imagination, the full engagement with this strange and shimmering world."It is with passages like this that Alan Lightman won me over. Not only in his direct, clear prose, but with his deep respect for both faith and science. I suppose it's more than respect--his argument is that reason and awe coexist in us....that we contain (and even court) the dual impulses of chaos and order, "the predictable and the unpredictable, the rational and the irrational, regularity and irregularity."And never did his explanation of science, math or the workings of the universe confound. Rather, he framed string theory, dark matter, atomic science in human terms. The accidental universe need not be scary or intimidating. Rather, Lightman suggests, "Could there be a preciousness and value to existence stemming from the very fact of its temporary duration?"lovely....just lovely

Mostly a set of essays on scientific concepts about the universe. Mr Lightman truly has a gift for communication and the ability to convey a tremendous amount of information in most every well articulated sentence. He also has a thorough understanding (scientifically speaking) of the subject matter and presents it in a way that is easily understood.However, his attempts to present theological viewpoints/counter viewpoints fall utterly flat, as you might expect from a self confessed atheist, and would have better off been entirely omitted from the book. After having read another book he wrote, “Einstein’s Dreams,” where he explores a plethora of possible ways in which the movements of time could be experienced, I was amazed to see how strictly linearly (time wise) he speaks about God in this book. In my humble opinion, this book is VERY limited in scope (theologically speaking) and demonstrates a complete lack of comprehension of an all knowing, all powerful and ever present (in all locations and in ALL time periods at the same time) being.Also, it’s mainly in the first few essays that he speaks of things worthy of deep consideration, after that it seems like filler used to complete a book sized publication instead of a magazine article. I read the book twice just to make sure I didn’t miss anything and because, after the first read, I knew that I intended to write this review.

I don't love to give five star ratings, but this is a book that makes you take a hard look at reality, both seem and unseen by the naked eye. It even brings us to the present day and how technology is altering our experiences. I find that to be profound given that none of it requires a higher power to work, dealing solely with the world around us. It doesn't r by the spiritual experience but makes it more of a metaphysical thing rather that something other. Great read.

The Multiverse essay is good but he doesn't explain crucial points eg how different universes are related mathematically. And why 10^500 of them - which to a biologist doesn't seem many. And can one have many "copies" of a given Universe? Presumably some Universes last longer than others - does this mean that they are more numerous?

This a book I will reread many times.It helps bridge the world of science with religion. With revelations of our universe and possible multiuniverses our place in all of this causes one to rethink how we've experience this earth we call home. It highlights the transcendental moments in our lives that no science can explain.The atheists are very convincing and cause us to look at how traditional religious beliefs impede our understanding of that consciousness that is beyond measure- the power that how the energy in our lives can shape our reality.That one can accept the sacred and what science teaches us.

This is a workbook designed specifically for teenagers who were adopted, spent time in foster care, or are being raised by grandparents or someone other than birthparents. The author is the mom of an adopted daughter and is sensitive to all the different configurations of "family" experienced in contemporary culture.The book includes many exercises allowing teens to get in touch with their feelings by circling one of many emotions listed in response to questions concerning self-identity, self-worth, and other adoption-related issues. These exercises were quite good and would probably work with non-adopted teens as well. Many exercises designed to help teens cope with stress and negative emotions are included in the book as well. Most of these exercises are yoga-based and offer ways to calm the mind and body.I liked this book use many of the yoga based techniques myself. However, I seriously doubt that teens would work through this book on their own. This book might best be used in conjunction with a therapy group, youth group, or guidance counseling class to offer some structure and basis for discussion among adopted teens or teens in foster or residential care. The yoga techniques are useful, but I'm not sure those not already familiar with yoga would be able to pick up the techniques just from the text.The content is great, but I wonder how much teens would actually use it.

There are some great parts of the workbook that could be helpful for teens and young adults wanting to work through difficulties in their adoption story or sense of self. It would be best to make sure that any adoptee or foster child working through such material would have the support and follow up with a trained professional (therapist, counselor) to make sure they can talk through difficult topics as well. The book's examples need to be general in parts to make sure to stay relevant to a wider audience - but not everything will be applicable for every transracial adoptee, or domestic adoptee, or foster child.If buying for your child, it'd be prudent to walk through the topics together, or make sure this material is used in conjunction with therapy (with the therapist's approval). I could see it being quite helpful moving some conversations forward and aiding in self-reflection.

Like other customer reviews, I think this book is a good stepping stone for opening the discussion up about adoption. It would most likely be the most beneficial in conjunction to therapy, group counseling etc, where young adults can take the book at a slow pace. For me, as someone who was adopted, I appreciated the attention to the aspect of trans-racial adoption. I personally think that even with the best intentions, trans-racial adoption can lead to a lot of issues of identity and connection for both the child and the adoptive parents. I definitely would suggest the parents to also take an active role in reading this book because it can also be a type of counseling for the parent or parents.

The first half of the book gives a concise and clear explanation of the basics of Java 8 Functional programming. However, the author appears to have rushed through the 2nd half, especially in design patterns and concurrency, with sections of in-cohesive explanations of patchy code sections of otherwise interesting examples. It would have been OK if complete samples code is included in the code-download site, but some of the more interesting samples are completely missing from the downloaded zip files. For example, the Domain Specific Language from chapter 8 and the Non-block IO Chat program from chapter 9 are no where to be found.

Awesome book if you have no functional programming background. It covers everything from lambda expressions, streams, collectors, and concurrency in an understandable, practical way.If you are new to Java functional programming be sure to check out the RxJava library as well. It provides an even more robust approach to chaining higher order functions than Streams.

Good book. Helpful to understand it. Not massively thick either so you can skim through it to bits you'd find useful.

I'd already been dipping my toes in the water with lambdas and wanted to broaden my knowledge of the new Java 8 features. This book gets to the point quickly and provides good takeaway advice for when and how to leverage them. On top of that, the author does a good job relating the features to each other so the topics build upon each other and earlier concepts get reinforced.

But for more than 50 years, Syvia kept her experience to herself: "It was something nobody talked about." Roy didn't know, and she admits that she didn't want to know. She always avoided Holocaust history. She was afraid of it; when she was growing up, there was no Holocaust curriculum, no discussion-just those images of atrocity, piles of bones, and skeletal survivors being liberated. Her father, too, was a survivor, but he seldom spoke of those years, and with his death, his story was lost. But a few years ago, Roy's aunt began to talk about Lodz, and based on taped phone interviews, Roy wrote her story, presenting it from the first-person viewpoint of a child, Syvia, in simple, urgent free verse in the present tense. Each section begins with a brief historical introduction, and there is a detailed time line at the end of the book.Syvia is four years old in 1939, when the Germans invade Poland and start World War II. A few months later, her family is forced into the crowded Lodz ghetto, with more than a quarter of a million other Jews. At the end of the war, when Syvia is 10, only about 800 Jews remain-only 12 of them are children. Syvia remembers daily life: yellow stars, illness, starvation, freezing cold, and brutal abuse, with puddles of red blood everywhere, and the terrifying arbitrariness of events ("like the story of a boy / who went out for bread / and was shot by a guard / who didn't like the way the boy / looked at him"). I am a pretty slow reader and I bought this and downloaded it and read it while at work and was almost finished with itin 3 hours, finished it the next day!! I have read a few book on the Holocaust and this one was by far the easiest to read. I can not wrap my brain around what these people endured back then it is just inhumane to think that anyone could be so cruel and sinister! I have a friend and his mother is French and father Belgian and she has told us story of them having to escape France with their children so as not to get caught up in WW2 even though they were not Jewish. I think Hitler wanted to wipe out every race but his own!! So horrific! I hope we don't wipe the stories of the Holocaust out they way we seem to be wiping out all of the other History because it offends someone!!! It would be a tragedy for these truths to go untold!!! WE NEED TO LEARN FROM OUR HISTORY AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE AND NEVER REPEAT IT!!!!

Over 6 million people of Jewish descent were killed during what is now known as the Holocaust at the time of World War II. Of those 6 million, 1 million were children.In the Lodz ghetto of Poland, thousands of Jewish people were forced to live in an already burgeoning area. Of all the people sent there only 800 adults and 12 children survived.Author Jennifer Roy, who wrote the book, Yellow Star, tells life in the Lodz ghetto in first person narrative. Her aunt, Syvia Perlmutter (Rozines) now know as Sylvia was one of the 12 children to survive. She was 10 years old when the Russians liberated the area. This is her story told through her eyes as a young child.The book begins all chapters with a bit of history timeline for the area. The first chapters open the book as Syvia is just 4 year old and must move from their home to the Lodz ghetto. She speaks about her older sister, Dora and her parents. She adores all of them as they do her.The story moves along with each year of Syvia getting older and each year a hardship on her family. Syvia is too young to work and often is left alone or in hiding so as not to be captured and shipped off by the Nazi's.She speaks of people missing including her best friends to never return. She laments about her favorite doll being 'misplaced' knowing full well that the doll was sold in order for her family to eat. She never complains.In more than a harrowing time, she is forced to hide with her father in a dug out ditch in a graveyard to save herself from being killed. Another time, she is hidden in a cellar, right under the noses of the Nazi's, with the 11 other remaining children in the ghetto, which includes her baby cousin. There she faces illness and always near starvation.At a mere one day shy of her 10th birthday, Syvia had a brave streak and managed to wake her father who in turn awakened the entire community in order to save them from a mass bombing that the allies had begun on the ghetto.What saved them most? Their will to live, their tenacity and yes, believe it or not, their sewn yellow stars.-----------------This book I read in two hours. I simply could not put it down. Syvia's story must be told!It took her 50 years after the events to tell her niece, the author, her story but tell it she did.I applaud Mrs. Rozines' bravery once again to tell her painful story. Without these stories of those who survived such an atrocity of history, their names and legends would never be remembered. Worse yet, the history would be long forgotten and it should not be.This book well deserves the 5 stars I am giving it. In fact, it deserves much more. I encourage you to visit a Holocaust Museum in your area if there is one or if you are in the Washington DC area visit the National Holocaust Museum. I was fortunate to hear Sylvia Rozines speak at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum First Person 2015 Series. I was very moved by the experience and anxious to delve further into her story and read this book. I wasn't disappointed. The book is an easy read, as it is written in her voice as a child living these atrocities. It is not gory or graphic, but still well told and takes you through this dark, tragic piece of history. Mrs. Rozines made a point that stuck with me and made me feel all the more honored to get to see her and hear her speak - although she was a young girl when this happened to her, she was old enough to remember her story. Those younger can tell their family stories, but these are her own memories.

This book is full of information about the war and how the Jewish were treated. It is a very interesting, but harsh, story through a young girl`s eyes and feelings. It is short and easy to read.

What a moving story! When I first downloaded this book, I hadn't noticed it's on the middle grade level, but you know what? It didn't matter. The simplicity of the phrasing made it all the more powerful.What the author did by turning her aunt's real life story into a book that both records family history and educates children is just a gift all the way around. This book relives the horrors of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a child who suffered through it in the Lodz ghetto. Told in the first person, the reader can't help but feel what Syvia feels. It's a brilliant method of storytelling, and I think this book should be taught in schools alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. It's that powerful and that important. Never forget!

About the Author

Beth Hansen started her more than twenty years museum career through a graduate program, but she has always worked at very small museums where she was the entire exhibit development/construction staff. Her mix of academic training and practical experience led her to teach workshops on creating exhibits for other small museums. Over the years she has worked with creative volunteers and ingenious museum directors who have come up with great ideas for do-it-ourselves projects. Beth is adjunct faculty in the Museum Studies program at the University of Oklahoma.She developed and teaches the Exhibit Development class for the Museum Studies graduate program at the University of Oklahoma. As a faculty member, she has access to the latest research in visitor studies. Sharing this information with volunteers at small museums is her goal for Great Exhibits!.

I flagged all the important pages and realized that I flagged most of the pages! It is that good a book. For my small museum and my first exhibit, Great Exhibits! has been a godsend. I feel less intimidated by the prospect and am ready to tackle the job.

Excellent reference book for any small museum. Provides a lot of guidance on preparing, designing, and constructing exhibits for museums.

Great book for people in museum studies programs! First six chapters discusses preparation before putting together exhibitions (audience surveys, layout, labeling, etc). Sample to do and checklists are in each chapter. Chapter 7 involves actual exhibit construction---types of frames, display cases, etc. Whether you are a curator of a museum or an artist that needs to understand how an exhibit is put together, this book is a treasure to those involved in exhibit planning!
