This book is ideal for young professional looking to break into the international development field as well as for more established practitioners considering a career change or looking to move up in their current field. Jessica Ernst's framing of the career search with questions guides the reader through their own journey and helped me personally focus my job search. I would recommend this book for solo reading or for career advisers and professors working with BA/BS and MA/MS/PhD candidates.

Just finished reading this book. The timing could not have been better for me as I'm starting to look for jobs in the international development field. I really liked the introspective approach, which is quite different from anything else I've read on the topic. Hope others find it just as useful as I did.

Great book!

This is a great resource for recent graduates trying to figure out the job environment for international development. It lays out the landscape of potential job pathways well (from NGOs to the federal government to international organizations), with advice on the job search, networking, and more. While it may be most useful for someone interested in the Washington DC environment, it also includes sections with advice on getting experience abroad. Most importantly, I think, are the questions (and checklist at the end) that readers can reflect on and create a plan of action tailored to their situation. Everyone's job search, and career, is going to be unique, but this is a good framework to weigh options and figure out what's right for you.

This book is a great read for anyone who is hoping to enter the international development field. I've worked in foundations, non-profits, and UN agencies, and the author capture the questions that young professionals should be asking themselves and gives good idea at ways to break in. Highly recommended!

A good read for anyone thinking of going into this field - helps you to ask and focus on the right questions.
