Love this book! I am an experienced gardener of 30 years yet I learned many things from this book. It is not just a gardening book but also has family stories and recipes to go with the vegetables grown. I added new things to my garden this year and found out some new ways to use the vegetables I already grow. This book is very easy to read and the pictures are wonderful. I would recommend it to gardeners and cooks alike, or anyone interested in learning about the Chinese food culture of one family.

A book for cooks? A book for gardeners? Both? I'm going with both.The Chinese Kitchen Garden is a wonderful book that is part memoir, part cookbook, and part gardening book. I regularly say to myself when I am cooking or gardening, that these experiences always come memories of people in my life who I have shared the experience of cooking with. I have the sense that Wendy experiences the same when she cooks and gardens. This book is like a those memories, bound up in paper. Such a wonderful, multi-layered reading experience. One that I will enjoy greatly as I read and use this book again and again.

I have not bought many new books recently, but this one caught my attention when I saw the advertisement in the Timber Press Newsletter. I have enjoyed reading this, and asked our university library to purchase a copy. The introductory section is very readable, as is all the text. I have numerous Chinese-American friends, and I have travelled to China five times. The author's recipes represent several regional styles, and are included with each vegetable. The layout follows the seasons. Gardening tips are straightforward, and follow the author's experience and her family's knowledge and interest. I have grown several of the vegetables included, and cooked many as well. I recommend the book and plan to purchase a couple additional copies as gifts for gardening friends.

This book contains history, growing techniques and recipes. It's both enjoyable and educational. I've been gardening for years and eat primarily vegetarian but this book covers many vegetables and herbs that I've been curious about but not quite sure how to use. Whether you pick them up at a farmer's market or grow them yourself, this book is a handy companion for understanding how to prepare Asian vegetables. The gardening information is suitable for first time vegetable gardeners but those who have been gardening for year, like myself, will certainly not be bored because of all the plant specific details.

I love gardening. I don't necessarily love vegetables or cooking. But I LOVED this book. Wendy's tips on vegetables I've never even heard of have inspired me to think outside my box, and her stories about her family are so wonderful. The photography is incredible and I've even loaned this book out a few times. One of my friends, who is from Taiwan, was browsing through the book and all of a sudden said "OH MY GOD, I NEVER KNEW THE ENGLISH NAME OF THIS VEGETABLE!!!!!!!!" This book is just as enjoyable as a couch-read as it is as a gardening book.

What a wonderful addition to my collection of cook books. I love how the author weaves together her family's story with her love of cooking. It is also great that the book follows the 4 seasons. My favorite dish so far is the steamed sea bass with cilantro, ginger and scallions. Easy to follow recipe with yummy end result. Unlike other cookbooks I was able to read about the flavorful Cilantro herb first. A book with lots of interesting facts and beautiful photos.For anyone who loves cooking.

Gardening is a passion many of us share. Vegetables and fruits are oftentimes the focus of the gardening bug. Wendy Kiang-Spray shared her passion, family history, gardening tips, recipes for each vegetable, and covers many vegetables one normally equates with Chinese food but also the oh I haven't heard how to use grow, or handle that vegetable in the garden, kitchen, or even let's try this before I plant it ideas.

A rewarding introduction to urban gardening, with well-planned and healthy recipes as an added benefit.You could also read this as a practical introduction to a chinese vegan diet. It works well either way.
