Excellent book on understanding what is and how to apply alternative discipline! As we all now know based on data and much research traditional forms of discipline have only led student on to the path to "school to prison pipeline" with such rules as zero tolerance policies. It is no wonder that schools are now forced to seek alternatives forms of discipline that actually work. As a parent of 3 and a grad-students, I found this book very helpful. It supports the truth that as parents, teachers, counselors, school staff, etc., part of our job is to prepare children for adulthood. To learn from their mistakes and teach them to make good choices in the future. Children are not bad, what they chose to do are sometimes bad, and it's our job to guide them grow from that. When we give them an opportunity to explain themselves and involve them in their own discipline, not only do we allow them to keep their self-worth, we are modeling honor and respect. Because they are allowed to explain themselves they can come up with the understanding of what they did wrong and how they can make it right again. Thus, taking ownership of their actions and are less likely to do that unwanted behavior again. This book walks you on how to do exactly that. It provides many examples of alternative discipline for different types of miss-behaviors. One thing to keep in mind is that as mentioned by the authors, these are ideas and may be used as guides, every child is different and again not one thing or list of ideas will work for everyone, therefore consequences need to be tailored to the student. Some may require more consequences than others, the goal is for the student to learn from the event and make better choices.In addition, I wanted to mention my favorite part of this book, the "Discipline Belief Self-Inventory" (P.9) I believe every administrator, teacher, school staff should take it. When you take this it will give you a "reality check" on your belief system. You may just find that what you say you believe in may not align with your actions. Or as administrator, you may just find why alternative discipline, PBIS, RJ, has not been working in your school.

The ideas and tools presented in this book are applicable and practical. I love that it incorporates social justice practices, but adds so much more. I also love that I can integrate these in at my own pace, rather than trying to make such a huge change at once. I would love to see a forum or social media group where we can all share our "toolkit" ideas. Anyone using these in their school? I would love to see a school using the alternative discipline idea for dealing with students misbehaving for subs!

As a family physician I'm always looking for insight on the comprehensive care of a patient, pediatric or otherwise. At times this compels me to consider how school and home interactions have medical consequences; charging me to inform with some evidence based guidance. This book gives me just the tools and perspective to advise meaningfully and thoughtfully. I'd recommend this book for forever learners, parents who want an education on academic discipline, and for teachers and administrators who place the stepping stones. Thanks!

As a dean of students at an alternatives school seeking true alternatives to suspension, this book was the icing on the cake. It serves as a much needed missing component to my discipline toolkit. The detailed examples of restorative, instructional and reflective disciplinary responses ignited a bulb for me. Any administrator interested in a truly non-punitive, non-exclusionary approach to discipline should not only read it but train their staff on its philosophy as well.

This book is informative and makes a lot of sense. It offers ways in which to handle behavior issues in place of just sending the child home for the parents to deal with, yet keeping the child accountable for their actions in a way that is useful and helpful to the child that may be going through issues and is what caused the behavior issue in the first place.

Long ago, the great chief deprived man of light as he hoarded for himself the sun, moon, and stars in three wooden boxes. Raven transforms himself into a pine needle so that he will be consumed by the chief's daughter as she drinks from the stream. He then is born a boy. Gradually the boy's doting grandfather allows him to play with each box in turn. First raven releases the stars, then the moon, and finally he returns to his former shape to fly up the smoke hole of the lodge with the third box. The story is fast moving with its magical transformations, and the language is simple and direct. The illustrations are dramatically shaded watercolor and acrylic drawings full of Native American detail and design. Many of them play with various reflections of light. Particularly effective are the scenes depicting the transformations and those in the lodge. Reborn as the chief's grandson, he whines, cajoles, and throws tantrums until the indulgent old man hands over the heavenly bodies. After escaping through a sooty smoke-hole with the sun, Raven's feathers are permanently black. Watts's paintings, with the enthroned chief clad in heavy Chilkat ceremonial robes and surrounded by carved boxes and other evidence of wealth, are at odds with Dixon's light touch. The powerful, stylized animal motifs of Northwest Coastal art, seen by bright firelight, seem an integral part of the vibrantly colored natural world--more so than the clownish human figures, which add little to the story save some exaggerated gestures and grimaces. Being a Tlingit Indian, and this being a tale from my culture---I appreciate this particular rendition. It is a book I read to my elementary class every year and it's structure lends itself well to the classroom. The illustrations are absolutely breathtaking.

Perfect addition to my unit of Native Americans, and their folktales. My class loved hearing and reading this beautiful book.

This is such a beautiful book. I adopted two children from Peru, and I spotted this book because it featured people who were not of European descent, but the pictures and the language are poetry.

This was a great little book to give you an overview about roping and working cattle. I've had this book for probably 4 years. I also have the Branaman roping series, and have used them as well. I've even gone so far as to purchase one of Brananman's "horse ropes" with the Branaman Honda and have practiced roping. And while I was never able to get to go to a Branaman roping clinic, I did go to a well known clinician's roping clinic (don't want to say who for fear of causing controversy) in which I audited and he helped me with some issues on my swing and throws. This book is not that great in learning the beginners throws, but it is wonderful in reading about advanced techniques in handling cattle. I would recommend getting the tapes if you are serious about roping. I would also suggest that after you spend a couple months throwing the loop, you should audit a roping clinic (this is ranch roping or "open range roping.") to learn to throw the loop properly. Since I am left handed, I had to learn to throw right handed and since I am ambidexterous, it was not too much of a problem. Be advised, that it will take you literally years of effort to get competent with a rope. Roping is literally like a language--you have to do it in order to learn it. Be aware in both the book and the Beginners tape, throwing the Houlihan is very poorly covered by Branaman and while I was doing it correctly, it sure did not feel that way. Any serious horseman should learn to be very handy with a rope. It is as much a requirement as learing to post in a saddle. I am just sorry that I was not taught this very important lesson of horsemanship at the very beginning. Learning to work a rope does not mean that you have to rope, but you may need it to catch a horse, subdue one or even prevent it from injuring itself. Buy the book to get an overview. Buy the tapes (I bought them at heavy discount--used)to start practicing. I immediately got the "roping bug," (I could hardly put the rope down.) And while I do not consider myself highly skilled, I am competent and really enjoy throwing the "big loops." Take my advice and audit a clinic soon after you start practicing because like Branaman says, doing it wrong means that you create wrong muscle memory which is something that you will ultimately have to unlearn. So doing it right at the beginning is the best way to maximize your effort. You know the old saying--PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT THROWS. While no one asked, and not necessarily part of this book, here are a few tips I wish I would have had that are not covered in the book. 1) Beginners should use a extra soft rope--at minimum a double "x" The Branaman 60 foot Nylon Rope is XXX soft. I used a 35 ft rope on a bucket, but a 45 footer would work better for a man. After a short period of time, you are going to want a longer rope to make longer throws. The 60 footer is too long for most men, and completely inappropriate for women with smaller hands. While I like the Branaman Honda, they are "touchy" and one is enough for me. 2) Have a good roper watch you early and give you pointers to make sure your technique is correct. Team Ropers don't throw big loop style, but they know how to pitch a rope...if you can't get a Big Loop Guy, ask a Team Roper to watch you to make sure you are developing correct muscle memory skill. 3) Practice on a bucket and actually watch the rope. What you are looking for is to keep you loop open and make sure that the rope lands on the bucket flat and in a perfect circle around the bucket--anything less than perfectly round is unacceptable. 4) Don't rope a dummy until all your bucket shots are perect "10s" out of 10s because when you try to rope your dummy, you're more interested in catching the dummy as opposed to developing good technique. 5) It is much more important to know why you missed at the beginning than catching the object. This will save you 50% of your throws. I don't mind missing, but I get really mad at myself when I don't know why I did not make the shot--that is both intolerable and unacceptable. 6)If you are going to make a dummy, don't buy a calf head, but rather a steers head. With a steer's head you'll make much more "one horn catches" but that will really pay off when you get on your horse. It is much harder at the beginning to catch a steer head, but it significantly decreases your learning curve--you become a better roper faster. (7)If you want to be a good stockman, never allow the loop to hit the cow. Always make sure the loop goes around the animal's head like a halo--hitting the cow with the loop accidentally makes the cow feel like it is being punished--that means that it will try harder to stay away from you in the future.

I wasn't that impressed. And that's from someone who's seen Buck on DVDs and is mesmerized by the guy's talent. I remain a huge fan of Mr. Brannaman, but as for learning to rope, I just don't think this book gets you anywhere. To be fair, I've concluded that learning to rope is really a video, not print medium. I have other roping books and they all suffer. You just can't see enough from a still photo, and describing the wrist, elbow actions etc can't fully describe what needs to be done. If you're a die hard Buck fan in general, this book will have general appeal, but specifically for roping, I can only give it 2 starts.

Look, it is not, nor is it meant to be, classical literature so never mind about "how" it is written. Not that it is bad, I am just sayin' it for those people who seem to feel the need to criticize every book as if they were in a university literature course.Anyway, the information it provides is clear. One complaint: it does not provide quite enough photos and there are some details difficult to convey via written word (the whole picture worth a thousand words thing). If they ever republish this book and provide better quality photos, including "close ups", it would be a tremendous help. The photos that are there are decent enough, but do not provide the detail. If this book had more photos that were higher resolution I would give it 5 stars.Not an easy skill to learn strictly from a book.That said, the photos are in color and if one has some imagination it is absolutely possible to learn from this book.Maybe the other thing to improve would be if there was more technical discussion on the merits of various rope types and sizes as well as the various Hondos (aka Hondas).Bottom line, if you enjoy roping and, especially if you appreciate Buck Brannaman, it is worth it to get this book.

Didn't really like the new development with Rufus, i was hoping that he would finally become a good guy since he's been helping so much. It just felt like the author decided mid-way through the book that she needs a token villain and there was no one but Rufus to fit the bill. So Pepper decides to be nasty to him despite him saving her life, and poof he's done being good. Axel was a major jealous jerk in this book. It's like his possessive side is coming out more and more and he's becoming more controlling, which i don't love. Starting to feel like Pepper is losing her identity a little and giving in to all of his demands and picking up some nasty personality traits along the way.The genealogy stuff was fun.

Another light, quirky, easy read that will keep you reading. A nice plot and the characters really enhance the storyline as they find things about themselves that they hadn't wanted to even think about let alone confess to anyone else. Especially loved the chauvinist snake that would only help when asked too by a male.Rufus is back and the coin of protection he has given her is causing a rift between her and Axel. As Axel has told her that she is his life mate, leaving her floundering. Her short teaching spell at the school had the Three Mean Girls (teachers) trying to put her down so much so that one even tried to kill her. However the spell back fired and got the originator instead. Now the mayor has decided to step down and Betty is fighting Gilda in the elections. Gilda is fighting dirty by getting the town hot under the collar regarding a secret that Betty is hiding from all witches. A chance to life amongst humans and be undetected. Will she keep believiing in Rufus? What will her answer be to Axel? How will the mayoral race end? Will the killer be caught?

I enjoyed the book. There was one thing that bothered me and is spoiled below about the plot and this books mystery. Looks like a cross over is in the future with the "Ghost Wrangler" series which I haven't read but will check out.All in all I like this series but...********* Sorry but can't really review withoutSPOILERS However was disappointed that one character seems to be reverting to former self. A new resident bad guy could have been introduced even though not the evil doer in this book. Though he hasn't ever been THAT evil doer just an extra.SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERTOne mistake I can't get a past, "The Book" it was left opened so it could be written in, BUT that wasn't noticed by Betty and the girls when they "borrowed" the book even though Pepper pointed out a " See it's mostly just.... "

Super spoiler alert.I really liked the main story throughout this. The genealogy was clever! I am really debating on giving this 4 stars though.I, however, hated the Rufus stuff. I guess I was in my heart of hearts still hoping that he would prove everyone wrong and be good. It was annoying that it was over so quickly, and there wasn't more depth to it. There wasn't more of a fight within her. Maybe I am just too naive to give up hope on people. Now he is probably going to be a reoccurring nightmare for Magnolia Cove . Overall, I wish there was a lot more characterization and development.

Pepper and Axel are up to their armpits in mysteries again. First a murder, then a book only a few people can read, then getting kidnapped along with Mattie. All this on top of several serious talks with Axel. Not to mention,the council decided to let Rufus back into town!

I started out really enjoying this light series, but they seem to get worse as time goes on. More repetitive, Pepper is stupidly oblivious, the romance is so slow it doesn't even burn. Just bored out of my mind and tired of hoping things will perk up.

I really enjoy reading about Pepper's adventures as a new witch. I didn't guess the culprit correctly, good twist. I am a bit disappointed about Rufus though - don't write him into a corner. Bad guys have to have dimensions to keep them in play...

If you like mysteries , something a little out of the ordinary then you will love these books they are fun have great characters and some romance too. Looking forward to Pepper’s next adventure
