He had published his first cartoons at the age of 10 in the Hobo News in 1932. After serving in the Army, he entered the comic book field in 1947. He did his first work through Simon and Kirby's Crestwood studio. In cooperation with Bill Elder, who did the inking, he produced covers and stories for Prize Comics, including features called 'American Eagle', 'Lazo Kid' and 'Black Bull'. The pair also did many fillers and contributions to romance and crime titles by Better Publications, National Periodicals, and Timely. In 1953, John Severin began working for EC Group, concentrating mainly on western and war comics, which were published in the titles Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Later on he also was a regular on Harvey Kurtzman's early issues of the MAD comic book, and served as an editor of the final issues of Frontline Combat. Severin also worked on EC's New Direction title Extra!, for which he drew the 'Steve Rampart' feature. After EC folded in 1955, Severin started drawing for Stan Lee's Atlas group, initially on westerns like 'Kid Colt', 'Rawhide Kid' and 'The Ringo Kid'. When Atlas became the Marvel group, Severin worked for the whole new range of comics, including 'The Hulk' and inking Dick Ayers's pencils on 'Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos'. Overall size was smaller than the original classics and the paper quality was not like the "rag" of the original comics (more dense and shiny).

A great story told well as a classic comic. Really brings the story to life. The movie version with Wes Studi is a must see if you are a fan of this story.

This illustrated classic was well done and gave the a most interesting synopsis of the great classic of James Fenimore Cooper. I really enjoyed and appreciated the excellent background notes which greatly helped understand what was going on in the longer version of the book. The illustrations enhance the story and are colorful and add a lot to the story. I think the biographic information of Cooper at the end of this comic is very well written and helps the reader remember the book and want to read more of Cooper's novels. If you are helping young people as a teacher or parent when they read this book, the Discussion questions at the end are good for leading the discussion. Well done!

Mike Guardia is an Armor Officer in the United States Army Reserve. He served six years on active duty in a variety of staff and leadership roles. He holds a BA and MA in American History from the University of Houston. Since 2010, he has authored ten (10) books on various topics ranging from military history to children's literature. Guardia has twice been nominated for the Army Historical Foundation's Distinguished Writing Award and is a recipient of the Gold Medal Book Award from the Military Writers Society of America. He has given book presentations at the US Special Operations Command, the International Spy Museum, the George HW Bush Presidential Library, and the Decatur Book Festival.

“The Fires of Babylon” for a civilian like me truly helped me understand Operation Desert Storm of 1991 and modern warfare. The book tells the story of the U.S. ground war against the Iraqi troops led by Saddam Hussein. Mike Guardia, formerly an Army Armor officer, leads the reader through the transition of the American Army in the Vietnam era into the 1990s, by telling the story of the officers and soldiers of Eagle Troop in the U.S. Army’s 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He gives us the story of their training in the U.S. and Germany which included everything from acclimation to the desert, preparations for chemical warfare, to the writing of their wills and last testaments and having pre-deployment photos taken in case they did not return. Their wills were written after Thanksgiving, and on December 4th they flew to Saudi Arabia. Once there, each soldier had to drink three bottles of water per day to survive in the desert and learn to battle the abrasiveness of the sand, which prompted many to repair their boots with duct tape. Then there were unexpected roadblocks like when they were being bussed to their battle stations by Arab drivers. There was an unexplained stop when all the drivers left their buses. The soldier told our author he thought to himself, “Why are we stopping the war for a prayer call? We’re already here in the desert, let’s get moving!” Finally on February 22nd the Eagle Troop drove their tanks into Iraq. After a month long air campaign against the Iraqi Army, the ground battle that lasted 100 hours began on February 23rd and was described in great detail, battling a sandstorm as well as the Iraqi tanks. The story of this battle and victory in the desert brought me a much better appreciation of what the U.S. soldier endured then and have endured for centuries. This book is an excellent read for those who want to understand the history of Operation Desert Storm and the U.S. Army.

Yet none of this was foreordained. Things might have turned out badly. That they did not is a story that deserves retelling, particularly in the environment I mention in this review’s first paragraph: one where a highly disciplined fighting force enjoys emotional support from a populace that has little real understanding of what it takes to fight.Guardia performs his narrative duty in a way that puts flesh and blood, face and voice to a limited number of armored warriors who prepared to face down Iraq and then did so with stunning speed and results. We follow them from Germany to Saudi and then across the berm into Iraq. This reader is struck by how severely intelligence had over-rated the Iraqi troops that waited there, and by how little our armor and infantry could have known of that until contact had been made. The opposite would have been calamitous.Guardia teases out the humanity of these soldiers, together with a number of other fascinating threads that include the shifts of military technology that were taking place at the time (for example, in armored troop carriers and among the tanks themselves); the critical pivot-point of professional and disciplined small-unit leadership; and the powerful strategy and tactics that were brought to bear on Saddam’s challenge.Not one of these themes has any element of ‘automatic’ in it. Each is the product of sustained effort in a single direction. I just finished reading this over the Memorial Day weekend. In general, I liked the book, the author was clear in what he was presenting and showed it in a way that gave you a glimpse of the unit and what they went through. My critic would be this was almost like reading through an AAR or general recap of the battle with just a few paragraphs about some of the individual people involved. The book lacked some depth in telling the story of the individual people, what the unit was going through before, during and after the battle. What was going on in the mind of the tank drivers as they crested the hill and came upon the Iraqi tanks? What was the loader thinking about as he loaded round after round? Did any of their tanks take any hits that bounced off their armor? Did they take any hits from the BMPs they attacked at close range? What was going through the minds of the infantry soldiers in the Bradley’s as they heard the battle going on around them or when they had to dismount? Why was there such tension between the battalion and brigade commanders and the troop leaders?Again, I liked the book from the historical aspect of learning more about this very significant battle, but I wish there had been more depth to the book and explored more of the emotions, thoughts, and insight from the men who were there. I’d still recommend the book for others to read.

As a singer and keyboardist, I was very pleased to have found a copy of this book at any price. It suited my purposes perfectly, which is to have a record of the lyrics and basic chords. If you're looking for a tablature of the intricate musical contributions of Howe, Wakeman, and Squire, this isn't the book, and wasn't expecting it to be so. I can't speak for the guitar tabs, but the keyboard arrangements are "Reader's Digest" approximations of the originals; it leaves the soloing and embellishing to the reader. As one who is interested in being able to sing and play their classic epics, for example, to my knowledge there's no better starting point out there for sheer coverage of the classic era.

This book has almost all the Yes songs worth learning, unless, of course, you like 90125. The book doesn't include songs from any albums after YesShows. Other than that, it is really thorough, if you don't play bass, drums, lead guitar, or sing backup. A couple years ago I bought a complete Beatles book. I remember being really impressed by the layout. It is written like a score and has every part that is played--not excluding anything. This is what I thought the COMPLETE Yes book would be, but this book has all parts dumbed down so that they can all be played on piano, and as a bassist, this isn't particularly helpful. It does, however, have all the chord changes so it gives one a better understanding of what is going on. Overall, I would say that I don't regret buying this book. It will be helpful in learning Yes songs. The piano bass parts are still very similar to what Squire is playing, and with a half decent ear for music, sounding out the rest should prove simple. It is worth the [the money] to a real Yes fan. WARNING: Don't buy this book if you can't read music. There is no tab.

The book was delivered on time and in good condition. No complaints for the vendor. The book itself is pretty disappointing. It leaves out most of the vocal harmonies of YES, leaves out large instrumental segments of songs, even a lot of the chords shown are "basic" - nothing like the complex chords used by YES. It may serve if you just want to have fun strumming and singing alone but won't do much to help serious devotees of the band. We'll still be stuck learning most of the "good stuff" by ear. There were a few bright spots where some of the fast piano passages were actually included, just not enough of them.

This book was really great for just piano and vocals. If you have a band and want to replicate Yes exactly, you'll need a lot more than this book, but it definitely helps. If you play guitar and want to learn Yes, you will have to learn by ear, but this book can surely help you out with the chords. My only complaint is that it is a bit pricey (I checked it out from the library).

The Book was Nice BUT it did NOT have TAB for Guitar. (Which is what I thought it was): ( Have not Opened it sence. I guess it was my fault. I should have read about the book more before ordering ( Plus I paid for over Night shipping) Scot

In short, this is more of an interpretation than a review of the of the play. My interpretation of the play is that it tells the story of how the rule of law was born, of how rage was replaced by reason in the conduct of human affairs.The ancient Greek drama, the Oresteia by Aeschylus, is the story of how the Greeks discovered the rule of law; it tells the story of the transformation of the society from one of tribal loyalties to a polity, from the rule of men and mysterious forces (the gods) to the rule of law and with this, the birth of community solidarity and affinity to an idea (Athens) larger than oneself, one’s group, clan or tribe.Trial by jury with evidence and procedure is the new model for determining guilt and retributive justice. Justice by revenge and personal action is replaced with justice imposed by the community and a new sense of community identity is thus born. The personal rule of men is ended, the rule law begins. With the law there is a brand new sense of community and identity with something more than one’s self, or even one’s tribe or clan. With the rule of law, the State is born, Athens as a polity is born and with it a new sense of patriotism and devotion.The Oresteia announces a new way of being in the world. Reason replaces rage, this is the new Athenian way of being. The play is repeated each year by the Athenians so that they do not forget what Athens stands for and why it is worth defending. This is the basis of the new patriotism and identity with the new polity. The age of heroes and gods is over the age of law and reason begins.

I originally began reading the Vellacott translation and I almost gave up on reading this trilogy. Switching to Fagles made all the difference. I'd highly recommend this translation! The beginning commentary by Fagles, The Serpent and the Eagle, is wonderful as well.

Like Homer's works, ancient Greece's famous tragedies never grow old...although this also depends on the translator's skills Aeschylus's trilogy based on Greek mythology is a powerful story, powerfully (and beautifully) written. We spent several weeks in a study group, comparing and contrasting it with O'Neill's masterful Mourning Becomes Electra ,a post-Civil War re-telling of the same tale.

I am not finished with this book but will continue with a hard copy ... a big minus for me the price they charged and no line numbers in the verse is a no no giving this review a one makes me angry....I am not commenting or reviewing Fagle or the Oresteia...I have and continue to read his work. Its the price of this E-Book and the lack of line numbers in the text and the verse as was in the original.

This is actually a really good read! I got this for a college assignment so I expected it to be somewhat boring but it really held my interest. The actual scene part of the book is a bit hard to understand but they give a translated story version at the beginning that really clears up any confusion.

All drama exists in the shadow of the three great tragedians of Ancient Greece; Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. They wrote scores of plays apiece, but only scattered works of those survive. Of Aeschylus' body of work survives the least: plays numbering a mere seven. However, Aeschylus was cut a bit of a break, because three of those surviving seven form the only complete trilogy of plays from Ancient Greek theatre: the Oresteia (Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex", "Oedipus at Colonus", and "Antigone" are often grouped together as the "Theban Plays", but they are not a proper trilogy, which, in Greek theatre, was three interlinked plays performed together in one festival, alongside a fourth satyr play; the satyr play that accompanied the Oresteia has been lost.The scene is the aftermath of the Trojan War, where at least 50% of all Greek mythology seems to have its roots; the victorious Agammemnon returns home, taking with him the despoiled Trojan Princess Cassandra, cursed by Apollo to forever speak truth and never be believed. The war is over, but the echoes persist; indeed, the tragedy has its beginnings in the war's beginning, when Agammemnon, in order to facilitate the armada's crossing of the Aegean, sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia. His wife Clytemnestra, understandably, resents this; perhaps less understandably, she has been unfaithful to her husband in his long absence, and, together with her new lover Aegisthus, plots to kill her husband, as well as poor Cassandra. The repercussions of this redound through the next two plays, "The Libation Bearers" and "The Eumenides", as Agammemnon and Clytemnestra's son Orestes, together with his sister Electra, must decide how to avenge their father's murder. Orestes is in a Catch-22, having to reconcile contradictory demands of divine justice: avenging his father means murdering his mother, a crime to the Eumenides, while not avenging his father will offend Apollo.When looking at Greek drama from a modern perspective, the aspect that many people find the most challenging is the use of Choruses. The first play, "Agammemnon", makes the heaviest use of the Chorus, and I consider it the weakest of the three (by virtue of being the first, it also has a lot of setup). The following "The Libation Bearers" and "The Eumenides" are stronger, with more limited Choruses, and, since the crux of the latter, especially, are debates with dialogue, there is no sense that important actions are occurring offscreen (which was a major trope in Greek drama). These types of stories remain an acquired taste, but they are very enjoyable to those who get used to them. Aeschylus here uses the whole trilogy, and particularly the final play, to dramatize the development of current ideas concerning justice; explanations are given here for the existence of the twelve-man jury, for example.While I consider Sophocles to be the greatest of the three tragedians, Aeschylus' magnum opus is well worth the time of fans of classical drama and mythology.
