... because that’s how emotionally drained I feel since swiping the last page on ‘Sadie’. Future readers, stock up on the tissues, and keep them handy at all times while reading. You’ll need them!‘WEST MCCRAY: ”She [Sadie] lived for Mattie, lived to love, care for and protect her little sister, with every breath”.’Sadie Hunter only ever had one goal in life – to protect her little sister, Mattie. To shield her as much as possible from the harsh reality of their poverty-stricken trailer park existence, living with an alcoholic, drug-addicted mother, and her revolving door of boyfriends. For thirteen years Sadie kept her safe, until the dreadful day Mattie was murdered. A year later, sees Sadie on the road, hunting down her sister’s killer. Now Sadie is missing, and radio producer, West McCray is determined to get to the truth of what happened to her. Following her trail, he uses a serialised podcast titled ‘The Girls’ to record and report his findings. May Beth’s (who owns the trailer park, and has a Grandmother’s love for Sadie) only wish is that West finds Sadie and brings her home to her.I’ve been anticipating the release of ‘Sadie’ forever, pre-ordered it in June, and have yet to see a review under 4-stars. Last year I was fortunate enough to read ‘Some Girls Are’ (all the stars from me), so I was already a fan of Courtney Summers, and her ability to tackle timely, tough, real world teenage issues, in a realistic, emotional, thought-provoking manner. The former was dark in places, but ‘Sadie’ is even bleaker, so if you’re expecting a happy book then this is not the read for you. Warning for sensitive and disturbing content. References are used sparingly, and avoid great detail, but are still horrible to read. Also if you are feeling low, or dealing with a stressful situation in your own life, this may not be the right time to pick up ‘Sadie’, as it won’t cheer you up. Although it may put your own problems into perspective!I was immediately drawn to Sadie as a character, even before I got to her POV. It’s impossible not to warm to someone who has so much love for another human being, who is selfless to such an extreme that she fails to care about her own well-being and future. Reading her POV only further cemented my love for Sadie, and I feared for her safety, prayed she wouldn’t sacrifice herself in her search for answers, and quest for revenge. All I wanted for Sadie’s future was the kindness, love, and happiness she so richly deserved. There were so many emotional moments, but one part that really got to me was the reveal of who came up with the title for the podcast, and the reason it was called ‘The Girls’ (which went beyond the obvious just so you know).I thought it was realistic, yet shocking, the amount of people who encountered Sadie on her journey, saw she was in distress, yet did nothing. This is a real, current issue of people not wanting to get involved for a variety of reasons – the topmost being that we all have so much going on in this fast-paced world, and we just don’t have the time or the energy to help out.‘Sadie’ is an ambitious book (especially for the YA genre), that is completely different from anything I have ever read, and I applaud Courtney Summers for writing it. Chapters alternating between the podcast and Sadie’s POV were a unique way to structure a novel, and really upped the originality. Also cute how Macmillan Publishing has released an actual podcast, available on iTunes (which I have yet to listen to, but plan to). Very cool accompaniment! My current top YA read for 2018! This one’s going to be hard to beat. Courtney Summers, whatever you plan on writing next, I will be there hitting the ‘pre-order’ button. Recommend to all the adults and teens in my life.

At the time I’m writing this review, it’s been a couple of days since I finished Sadie, and I still haven’t fully processed it. This is one of those stories that seeps into your bones somewhere along the way, and it changes the way you look at the world a little. It is the best mystery—and one of the best books, period—that I have ever read, and it is also one of the bleakest, most devastating reading experiences of my life. You know, going into this story, that Sadie’s little sister’s body has just been found, and Sadie is on a mission to track down the man she believes is responsible. Besides the fact that it’s a story partially told through podcast episodes (which is such an incredible touch), that’s all you really need to know. This isn’t about what happens so much as it is about coming to know and love Sadie—and to know and love Mattie, too, through her memories. It’s about recognizing that the society we live in has this terrifying, grimy layer that nobody wants to talk about, where little girls are never really safe, and children are forced to grow up way too fast, to become adults in replacement of the parents they didn’t ask for. With a mother suffering from addiction, a community that looked the other way far too many times, and a life of barely keeping food on the table, much less having any real opportunities to succeed, Sadie feels like such an old soul. I don’t know how many readers will struggle to relate to the age of her inner monologue, but from another woman whose circumstances never quite allowed me to feel like a child, I saw so much of myself in the cynical, pragmatic way Sadie views the world around her. It’s hard enough to grow up poor and in a broken family, but Sadie’s also queer—she doesn’t label herself, but explains her sexuality in ways that heavily point to pansexuality—and she stutters, which forms a barricade between her and the rest of the world. Her representation feels so valid and genuine, and it broke my heart every time she mused about how imprisoned she felt by her struggles with speech.More than anything else about Sadie’s character, though, I loved the fierce, maternal determination she has for taking care of Mattie—and, once Mattie is gone, for finding her killer and dishing out justice. Every memory of Mattie, whether told through her view of their adopted grandmother May Beth’s, is beautiful and haunting. The tremendous amount of guilt that Sadie carries as she blames herself for what went wrong had me completely breaking down in passages, and I’ll admit without shame that I read the last several chapters through tears. The most brutal part of it all is that, somehow, it feels like Sadie’s story could be based on a real girl—no, on countless real girls, all over the world.Without spoiling the plot, I want to warn you that this book focuses heavily on child abuse and sexual assault, and it is broken down in the most honest, agonizing ways. There’s also a solid portrayal of how deceptive abusers can be, as the abusers in question are shown to have fooled so many people. But there’s also another side to the representation here, as we see Sadie’s intense solidarity with other abused girls, and her desperate need to protect and defend them, even though (perhaps especially though) she feels that she failed to protect and defend her sister. There’s not much else I can tell you now, because I think it’s the kind of story that you should go into without too many expectations. Just climb in, let Sadie take you for a ride and tell you her story, and try not to let your heart get too broken in the process. This is a phenomenal story, and I know that I will be thinking about it for a long, long time to come.

This is a good book about a difficult topic. Triggers abound in this novel about child abuse and assorted other misdeeds. You have been warned. But, it is an interesting story about 2 young sisters, one dead, one missing and the sad circumstances that lead to their troubled end. The book is narrated by the missing girl and the other narrator is a radio (serial-type) podcaster/broadcaster who takes up the cause of finding out who killed the first sister while trying to locate the missing second sister. It is quite the adventure. I give is 3.5 stars because the narrative was hard to follow at times but in general it was a worthy read. Hug your babies tonight. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - #book #bookstagram #booknerd #bookish #childabuse #abuse #bookworm #read #readersofinstagram #reader

Good recipes, so far. We had the Corndog Casserole based on another reviewers raves, and it was indeed delicious. Next I want to try the Beef Burgundy with a couple of the side dishes when I have company over for dinner. But, one thing I noticed is that some of the recipes sounded familiar. I've seen the very same Broccoli Cornbread in another cookbook, as well as quite a few others. In fact, the Jiffy-Mix Company came up with that recipe first. I don't think these recipes are theirs, but lifted from other sources not noted in the recipe. Don't say "their recipes" on the back cover if they are not indeed theirs.

This is the Casserole Queens second cookbook. A New York Times, Best Seller, and with high praise from none other than, Bobby Flay, on the cover. The first recipe I tried was the Pile HIgh Frittata. It includes the ingredients based on a Denver Omlette, for the best breakfast casserole I have ever tasted. Shared the recipe with friends and now their all time favorite breakfast casserole too. This book has more of the 9 x 13 casseroles, with several seafood options, and included breakfast casseroles at the end of the book. Homemade cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soups to use in recipes, instead of the canned versions. Bobby Flay loved their savory lasagna and the caramel bread pudding. If you are looking for recipes that will perk up mealtime at your house, this book delivers. Both of their cookbooks make it easy to make a great family meal, put a casserole in the freezer for another day and allow you to make enough food to share with a family member that may not be able to cook for themselves. With the dietary notes, pretty much solves all the cooking challenges cooking for family presents.

Love the book. Gives a lot of information along with each recipe. The best part for me are the freezer storage information. We have two freezers and keep them full most of the time. Thankful that I bought this book.

I enjoyed reading this cookbook! Some recipes reminded me of the food I enjoyed in grammar school back in the 60's. Love it! Love the recipes!

Too many deserts, starters. Not enough main dishes for my liking

I really liked this cookbook it was an Amazon recommendation after purchasing The Pioneer Woman cookbook. I really like all the different types of dishes they included as well as all the freezing tips and tricks.

Great cookbook! Most of the recipes are simplified updated classics cooked in a casserole dish. I'm very pleased with this cookbook.

Purchased as a gift for a friend who wanted casserole recipes. Very good!

Only a few books out of the thousands I’ve read impacted me more than MONDAY’S NOT COMING. The irony is that I almost didn’t buy it because it seemed to be directed toward younger readers. Do not make my faulty assumption, which was based on the age of the protagonists.Claudia, a fourteen-year-old African American girl, begins the book by saying, “This is the story of how my best friend disappeared.” Monday Charles has been like a sister to Claudia, and when she doesn’t arrive at school the first day, Claudia knows something is wrong. Days pass with no sign of Monday, and Claudia is becoming frantic.Claudia and Monday live in subsidized housing in Washington, DC. Both are poor, but Monday is poorer. Claudia comes from a stable, loving family; Monday’s family has problems. She is like a surrogate daughter to Claudia’s parents. Claudia and Monday are inseparable, although Claudia spent the summer with her grandmother in Atlanta. When Claudia questions Monday’s family, she can’t get a straight answer. Monday’s neighborhood is known to be dangerous, and she can’t get help there either. She expresses her concern to her teachers and guidance counselor, but almost everyone assures her that Monday is fine. One special teacher reports Monday’s absence to social services and is given the runaround. Monday’s mother tells all questioners that her daughter is with her father; Monday’s sister says, “Her aunt.” And those stories change. The tension builds as time passes with no sign of Monday. Claudia and her family report Monday’s disappearance to the police, and again are told not to worry “because teenage girls often run away.” With the exception of Claudia’s family, nobody understands the bond between the two girls. Monday would never have run away without telling Claudia. This book addresses racism, prejudice, gentrification, social services and the criminal justice system when applied to the disadvantaged living in Section 8 housing. Just imagine if Monday were named Sloan, lived on Park Avenue and attended prep school in Manhattan. Would everyone in authority do nothing if “Sloan” insisted that her lifelong best friend had disappeared? I see “Breaking News” banners flashing, and an Amber Alert issued.Tiffany Jackson did everything right when she wrote MONDAY’S NOT COMING. The Quentin Tarantino-esque timeline is brilliant, especially so when I reached the end. I was caught completely offguard as I reached the last page, but what a logical conclusion the book reached. And who couldn’t fall in love with Claudia and Monday? Anyone with a best friend understands that bond, and I would be lucky to have a persistent friend like Claudia. She never gives up. It is obvious to me that Tiffany Jackson poured her heart into this book; she certainly grabbed mine.

If a middle school student disappears, shouldn’t people care? If that child is a cute white girl from a middle or wealthy class family, her face is plastered over the news. Her sobbing family look sympathetic during press conferences. The police and maybe the FBI are involved. Friends, neighbors and strangers join search parties. This is, but should not be privilege. When that child is a black girl from the projects, the police (sometimes) assume she’s a runaway. If social services are involved with the family, she may slip through the cracks. She’s rarely headline news.4.5 STARSClaudia’s best friend Monday doesn’t show up for the first day of eighth grade and no one seems concerned. No one but Claudia. Monday’s mother says the young teen is with her father, Monday’s sister says she’s with an aunt. The school says she’s not registered. Claudia’s mother says Monday will turn up. As days turn into weeks into months Claudia is more determined to find her best friend.I wanted to fall in love with Tiffany Jackson’s sophomore effort as much as her debut ALLEGEDLY, but the layout was too confusing to follow. Chapters were labeled Before and After, and also Before Before and 2 Years Before Before so I was often confused about what time period I was reading. If Before has been before Monday disappeared it might have been a bit easier. Upon completing the book, I understood why Jackson chose ambiguity, but it took away from my enjoyment.I just loved Claudia and her complexity. Monday was her only friend, her other half, the one who gave her confidence. Suddenly alone, Claudia’s dyslexia becomes more apparent. She fears the Stupid Class. Dance is her salvation, but she feels like she doesn’t belong with the best group.MONDAY’S NOT COMING made me mad and sad and frustrated as a system too overworked and under serviced to take notice. Pointing fingers is easy. Most professionals, teachers, counselors, social workers do their best in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, their best can fail kids like Monday.Anything more I want to say about MONDAY’S NOT COMING falls into the *spoiler* category. Jackson is a writer worth exploring. Her books have made me think and feel in areas novels don’t often touch.

This book was absolutely gut-wrenching. I honestly don't even know what to say. I read it in a single sitting, and I don't think I'm going to forget it any time soon. This book should be required reading--it touches on so much, from teen sexuality to racism to gentrification to child abuse to friendship. I honestly might have to come back and write a better review later, because this book...ahh. I can't do it justice.

The wonky timeline and the not-so-great writing made this book hard for me to love...What exactly does One Year Before The Before or Two Years Before The Before even mean? Wouldn't it have been easier using years? It would have offered so much more clarity to the reader, that's a certainty. I honestly never quite knew where I was in the time line of the story. And without giving anything away, the "twist" at the end of the story made it even worse.I appreciate what the author was trying to do, but I don't believe she achieved her goals with this story. It's just so awkwardly written.2.5 stars

Powerful, heart wrenching, tear jerking novel about teens in the DC suburbs. My heart is just breaking for Monday, Tuesday, August, April, and Claudia, and all children who are missing. I am in a funk now, missing Monday, Claudia, Michael, and all the strong and richly developed characters in this novel. I’m anxiously waiting for your next one, Ms. Jackson.

The great thing about this book is that gives a realistic viewpoint on becoming a glassblower. Many books present a flowery overview of the art but few spell out the costs involved, the struggles of making a name for yourself in the art show circuit, and how to display your works. I am a glass artist myself and I can relate to this story on a personal level.

I simply thought that this book was poorly written. I thought that it would be a how to start your own glass studio instructional guide. It was more of a story of how a hobbyist made one. It was painful to read and offered no real insight into anything practical.

Not as convenient as having a book in hand that you would refer to any time other than being on my Kindle you could get that you even have it but it is as advertised

Great read for anyone interested in pursuing their own small glassblowing studio. I had stalled in the process of building my own studio and this book really helped give me that extra kick in the rear to get back at it! Very detailed in laying out the costs of starting up a hotshop.

Just getting interested in glassblowing myself and would love to have a studio, it was very interesting and informative about the set up.

Very cool!

This is an absolutely enthralling story about a foolish duck who places her trust in a stranger who ingratiates himself to her. Jemima is a duck who lacks patience, perseverance and discernment. She flees a place of safety and care to find a place to lay her eggs but unfortunately befriends a fox. The fox tells her what she wants to hear and offers her everything she needs to lay her eggs. There are hints that this fox shouldn't be trusted, but Jemima ignores them. Some might object to the sad ending, but books are a safe place to learn hard lessons. In this case, the lesson is that people who agree with everything you say and bend over backward to accommodate you may not always looking out for your best interest. My preschooler loves this book for the beautiful illustrations and interesting dialogue. He doesn't understand the moral lesson yet, but the point of good literature is to place the story in the child's mind so that later, when he is more mature, he has an existing narrative to compare real-life experiences against.

I bought this to accompany a gift (a dress made from a Jemima Puddleduck print) for a little girl of my acquaintance. This was my daughter's favorite story at 2 (she's 34 now). She wouldn't part with her copy, so I had to buy a new one:) It's a sweet tale of a duck who wants to hatch her own eggs and runs afoul of a crafty fox. Just enough suspense to keep a very young listener on the edge of his or her seat, but a happy ending for all (except maybe that naughty foxy fellow).

I bought this book as part of a big sister-little sister present. I got my friends' older daughter this copy and their new baby a board book version. This copy from the publisher Pavilion Press is awful. The pictures are all pixelated and there is a black like that runs across the top of the cover like it had come off of someone's home printer and they hadn't cut the cover out properly. I could not give this book to my friends, so I had to return this copy. I love the story of Jemima Puddle-Duck and would highly recommend that to someone, but this particular copy from Pavilion Press is a waste of money and is very poor quality.

I downloaded this old story so I could read it to some of my grandchildren. It is a cute story my mother read to me when I was little. Love it.

This is a lovely fanciful tale about a stupid, gullible duck. Since I love all the author's books, I loved reading this one too. The only regret I have is there are no beautiful illustrations.

This is another great Beatrix Potter story. It provides a good lesson for children on not getting too friendly with strangers, however charming. There is danger involved, although Jemima is unaware of it, and [spoiler alert!] some violence, perpetrated off-scene by dogs, which results in one minor sad incident and an indeterminate. possibly more serious one.

Loved it. I also bought two sets for Christmas gifts.

This is an absolutely charming book. By itself, the book is a wonderful gift for a new baby. Couple it with a Jemima Puddle Duck stuffed animal and you have a gift that will be treasured for years. I like the small book because it is sometimes hard to hold a grandchild AND a book while you read to them. Besides, the smaller book is reminiscent of the original book. All in all, I would highly recommend this book.

The Guardian by Nicholas SparksI have read all the books but never reviewed them so thought I'd start with this one.Julie Baroniss was decorating the tree this year. She's a widow as Jim had recently died from a brain tumor. The gift is from her husband, he had planned to give this to Jules, his pet name for her a Great Dane. A guardian for her because he can't be there for himself to look out for her himself.4 years later Singer has grown a lot and protects her.Richard is her date and Michael is her brother in law that is always around to fix the car and do other chores she can't.Book follows Richard and his past life with his mother and how weak she was and he's only in town temporarily. He wants to reinvent her.Julie works at a local hair salon and is always busy with Singer. He knows her whole past and has all the pictures along the way tacked on his board...Story takes a terrifying turn making it very scary for me that nothing can be done..

This is a book every dog lover will like. Julie Barenson becomes a widow at twenty five when her husband dies from a brain tumor. That first Christmas she receives a gift: a great dane puppy purchased for her by her husband with a letter written before he died that the dog will be there to comfort and protect her, that he (her husband) will always be watching out for her from wherever he is, and that she should be on the lookout for that person who will be her love for the rest of her life. Still it takes four years for her to be ready to move on, but in that four years the puppy, who she names Singer, becomes the protector that makes her feel safe, going everywhere with her, even to work at the beauty salon. After dating several men, she discovers her husband's best friend is the man she falls for. But somewhere along the way she acquires a stalker. Now her life will never be the same.

Spoiler alert! Do not read this review if you've not read the book! I thought it was okay. But I admit I'm very different in my likes in comparison with most people. I like animals more than people so that skews my opinions. I can't even watch a Disney movie because it seems inevitable that an animal will die. . .even if it supports the meaning of the book. . .I just can't handle it. So I was very ticked at the ending of this book. . .but I have to say in the back of my mind I figured it's how it would end, but was hoping the point could be made without that happening. I was more disappointed that the humans didn't die, if the dog had to die. Harsh I know, but it's just the way I feel. So I'm sure most readers would be fine with this book, but for those of us who are especially sensitive toward animals, I'd skip this book. I've had animal lover friends who adored this book but they don't share the same sensitivity I have towards animals.

I'm a dog lover and could identify with Julie's feelings for her beloved dog. That is the only part of the book that evoked tears from me. I am a fan of Nicholas Sparks' books since The Notebook, the best one he ever wrote as far as I'm concerned because none of the others have outdone it. I also loved Safe Haven, but The Notebook is still my favorite and probably always will be. This book did not draw me in as quickly as the others. It took me a while to get into it and want to keep reading it. That is not usual for his books. The small town was realistic for me, as I was reared in one. Some of the characters were more developed than others. I thought Julie and Mike were well developed and so was the beauty shop owner. I don't expect minor characters to be as well developed as the major ones. The villain was well developed. The saddest part of the book for me was about the poor, loyal dog. I can't say more without giving away the story. My favorite part was how Jennifer, the rookie cop, showed her partner that she didn't need him to teach her the ropes. I also enjoyed the beauty shop owner and found her realistic. I will continue to read his books, but this one did not evoke my emotions as much as The Notebook and Safe Haven. This book seemed to drag in the beginning, not the middle as some do. It was predictable as well. I did not like the ending to this one as much as I have others, because of my real favorite character, the dog. Author BJ Robinson, author of Azalea Plantation series and others

Romance and thriller all in one. Julie is a young widow having recently started dating. Mike was her late husband's best friend who has patiently been waiting for Julie to see him as something other than a friend. Richard is the charming newcomer, an engineer consulting on a bridge project nearby. Doesn't take long to realize Richard is not quite what he seems. Of the supporting characters, Jennifer, the rookie cop, is my favorite. And of course Singer, the Great Dane. But don't read the last third of the book just before going to bed.

Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools: A Memoir, by Theodore Fontaine

Review

Fontaine has crafted a book that will foster understanding and empathy, as it implicitly asks all readers to examine their own views on this tragic period in our history. --Winnipeg Free Press "Canadians who advise survivors of Native residential schools to "just get over it," should read Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools. . . . If the key to successful communication is showing, not telling, a story, Ted Fontaine succeeds completely in demonstrating from his own experience how damaging the "dark legacy" of residential school can be. His story's upbeat ending also serves as an inspirational example of the lucky minority of survivors who, with help and determination, triumph over that malignant inheritance." --Jim Miller, BC Studies A poignant and powerful story that will help Canadians understand why the residential school system had such a devastating effect . . . ultimately, it is a hopeful and victorious story, as Fontaine found a way through his pain and came to terms with what he saw as "an overwhelming anger" at his parents for abandoning him . . . Broken Circle allows readers to understand that the residential school experience, while damaging to the culture, language, history and beliefs of aboriginal people, is a human story. --Rocky Mountain Outlook This is a story of healing. Fontaine's first-person account balances difficult memories with an affirmation of pride in his aboriginal heritage. It is in turns heartbreaking and touching, but invaluable for the light it sheds on a dark period in Canadian history. --TechLife Magazine -- (01/07/2011)"If you believe, as I do, that knowing our past can help us make positive changes in our future, read this book . . . [Theodore] is doing a remarkable service for First Nations, but also helping non-Aboriginal people see the destructive impact of residential schools." --Rosa Walker, President and CEO, Indigenous Leadership Development Institute, Inc.-- (01/10/2011)"Broken Circle takes readers by the hand and walks us through the lonely corridors of Fort Alexander Indian Residential School. Mr. Fontaine discloses how the trauma he suffered as a result of his incarceration in Canada's Indian residential school system has affected him throughout his life. What I find remarkable about his memoir is the generosity, bravery and open-heartedness with which he shares these sometimes joyous, sometimes painful moments of his life. Ultimately these memories aid him in his personal journey of victory over the enduring legacies of Canada's church-run, government-funded institutions of genocide. In the spirit of reconciliation, Mr. Fontaine brings us to his own healing. And in this way he has added to the healing of us all." --Kevin Loring, author of Where the Blood Mixes-- (01/10/2011)"First and foremost, Broken Circle is a reflection of Ted's courage. It is also a hopeful, inspirational story that will give courage to other residential school survivors. It will show them that they're not alone and that these unique stories are a part of Canadian history that should be told. Above all, Broken Circle is about healing and reconciliation. It makes its point, but there's nothing vindictive about it. Lovely." --Phil Fontaine, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, owner/operator of Ishkonigan Consulting & Mediation-- (01/10/2011)"A commendable and solemn depiction of First Nations life post-1940s and the consequences of residential schools. An important contribution to First Nations literature and history of Indian Residential Schools." --Shawn A-In-Chut Atleo, National Chief, Assembly of First Nations-- (01/10/2011)"Too many survivors of Canada's Indian residential schools live to forget. Theodore Fontaine writes to remember. It's taken a lifetime to make peace with the pain, shame and fear inflicted upon a little boy wrenched from his family when he was only seven. Ted hasn't forgotten, but he has forgiven. This is what makes his voyage of self-discovery so compelling. This memoir is a life lesson about hope, healing and happiness." --Hana Gartner, CBC's The Fifth Estate -- (01/10/2011)"Theodore Fontaine has written a testimony that should be mandatory reading for everyone out there who has ever wondered, 'Why can't Aboriginal people just get over Residential Schools?' Mr. Fontaine's life story is filled with astonishing and brutal chapters, but, through it all, time, healing, crying, writing, friends and family, and love--sweet love--have all graced their way into the man, father, son, brother, husband, and child of wonder Theodore has always deserved to be. What a humbling work to read. I'm grateful he wrote it and had the courage to share it. Mahsi cho. --Richard Van Camp, author of The Moon Of Letting Go -- (01/10/2011)

This is a memoir, and some of what it tells is happy and idyllic. Other parts are sad and just a downright disgrace, yet another blot on both the Canadian and the American past. It's well written and poignant, especially the school memories, which seem to be sharp fragments, all the author can fish out of of his memory concerning the harsh, frightening, and often degrading experiences to which he was subjected. So hard to believe that anyone-could imagine that this policy of removing of the vulnerable young from their families was the "right" or "civilized" thing to do! I'm encouraged that Chief Fontaine was able to share this personal story with the world. That he eventually put the bits and pieces of his self-esteem back together and then went forth in new found strength to work for justice for his tribe is a monument to the intelligence and endurance of 1st Nation's people everywhere.

A powerful and courageous memoir of the hell inflicted upon indigenous peoples and sexual abuse perpetrated by the Catholic Church. A story of survival. I hoe the US can someday find the courage to right the wrongs of our ancestors.

There are not may books that I've read about surviving the boarding school experience. This book was written by a Canadian survivor. I am an Alaskan Eskimo who went to boarding school in Alaska. It answered a few of my own questions why I feel the way I do as an indigenous person. The book was well-written. I will recommend this book to those who have their own struggles coming to grips with their experience away from their families and communities growing up.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has suffered any form of abuse in their life. This has allowed me to begin my journey of healing. Thank you for that Mr. Fontaine.
